Chapter 29 - You Will All Study Literature!

For the next week, Miss Fíliya spent all her time at her post, with hardly any time to even go see Sense.

After all, who told her to let so much work pile up?

Of course, she wasn't the only staff member in the Continental Magic Association's library, but many tasks could only be completed by her.

For example, ancient grimoires sent from the Adventurer's Guild, artifacts buried for a thousand years, historical documents, and classic texts... were all written in ancient Elven.

These treasures, discovered by adventurers exploring labyrinths, were mostly acquired by the Continental Magic Association and then sent collectively to specialists for appraisal and translation.

"Sigh, what has the world come to? Barely any mages of this era can read ancient Elven. This is going to be the death of me. You'd think the Association would give me a little extra compensation."

Miss Fíliya grumbled and cursed as she wrote furiously.

This was the City of Magic—Äußerst, the headquarters of the Continental Magic Association. There was no shortage of top-tier combat power here.

However, it was sorely lacking in talent proficient in ancient Elven, so the burden on Miss Fíliya's shoulders was anything but light.

Although she wasn't the only one who could read it, there clearly weren't enough hands. Thus, Miss Fíliya often thought to herself.

Why not have that long-lived old elf share some of her work?

Serie would surely know every strange and ancient language imaginable. And if she were to translate, her efficiency would certainly surpass that of everyone in the library combined.

After all, she was powerful and didn't need rest.

But such a thought existed only in Fíliya's mind; she would never dare to actually ask that old elf for help.

To that goddess of magic, only the most profound magic was worthy of her personal research.

Tedious and low-level work like translating ancient texts, appraising ancient artifacts, and identifying magic items was definitely left to those beneath her.

"Sigh... If you ask me, the First-Class Mage Exam needs to include a humanities section in the future. Otherwise, ancient Elven is bound to be lost to time..."

Fíliya continued to complain. If she were the chief examiner for the First-Class Mage test, the very first stage would be ancient Elven. 'Go and hit the books, all of you! We can talk about fighting after you pass the exam.'

If various humanities subjects were made a compulsory part of the First-Class Mage curriculum, her own work would surely become much easier in the future.

She thought, delighted with the idea.

She didn't know how long she had been working continuously. Was it two days? Or three?

It didn't matter. She only knew that she had to finish all the piled-up work quickly. To that end, she had even used a potion that forcibly stimulated her mind.

Finally, late one night, she finished all her work.

But this didn't mean she could rest. She still had to make a series of preparations for the adventure she was about to undertake.

Late at night, she visited many shops selling magic items and... boring jewelry stores.

After getting everything ready, she finally collapsed onto her small bed.

She slept for a full day.

On the third day, she awoke from a state of deep sleep (or coma) and got everything in order.

That day, she once again found herself before the door to Sense's office.

...

Slowly pushing the door open, she had seen the same scene countless times over the years, yet every time she saw Sense, she felt an inexplicable sense of peace.

To Miss Fíliya, teasing Sense was fun, and being teased by Sense was also fun.

The time spent with Sense was the most important counterbalance in her life.

She slowly walked up to Sense, who had already noticed her long ago.

"I'm going to be leaving again for a while."

Fíliya said with a calm expression.

Hearing this, Sense was slightly taken aback, then asked in return.

"Why? Don't you hate accepting commissions? Besides, there's a lot of work piled up for you at the library, isn't there?"

"The work is all done. I just translated twenty or thirty grimoires and appraised over a hundred magic items and artifacts. Does that really take so long?"

Fíliya said with an arrogant look, clearly very confident in her talents.

"And it's not a commission... I just want to go train a bit, cross the border into the Northern Plateau."

Fíliya's words made Sense frown slightly.

"The Northern Plateau is occupied by the Demon Race right now... It's very dangerous."

"I know it's dangerous. If it weren't, I wouldn't go. To be honest, I want to encounter stronger demons... The ones I've met before were all too weak. It's hard to get any useful findings from them."

Upon hearing Fíliya's reply, Sense couldn't help but sigh.

Of course, she knew of Fíliya's ambitions and was well aware that once Fíliya decided on something, it was difficult for others to stop her. Still, she wanted to try and persuade the girl before her.

After all, she had only been back for a few days. Was it really necessary to leave in such a hurry?

"But the route to the Northern Plateau is sealed off now. Only First-Class Mages are permitted to enter... Why don't you wait another two years? After you've taken the exam. Wouldn't it be better to just keep doing the work you like, studying ancient texts and artifacts?"

Sense's tone was filled not only with worry but also a sliver of hope.

This made Fíliya feel a little puzzled.

"But Sense, you were the one who encouraged me to go out more before, you even assigned me commissions... Now that I actually plan to go train, you're trying to stop me?"

"That's different. Within the border, or near it... you generally won't encounter powerful demons."

Fíliya finally got it.

"Oh... so you're afraid I'll die."

A playful expression began to form on her face, and just as she was about to say something teasing to Sense, she noticed that Sense's expression was extremely serious.

Normally, Sense would have bickered with her, arguing back for a bit, but not this time.

"Yes. I'm worried about you."

Rarely did Sense admit such a thing so frankly.

This time, it was Fíliya who was at a loss for words.

After a long pause, she finally came up with a suitable response.

"Mmm, you're worrying too much. I'm a young prodigy favored by Lady Serie. How could I possibly die so easily?"

"Is that so."

Sense responded, but her face was devoid of any emotion.

"That's right. Did you know, Lady Serie is very fond of me... Besides, don't you trust my ability to escape? Even if I ran into a Greater Demon, I'm confident I could get away. So just relax... Look at this."

As she spoke, Fíliya pulled an envelope from her pocket and handed it to Sense.

Sense took it and glanced at it, her pupils widening slightly.

Because it was a letter of passage.

"Lady Serie has already approved my trip to the Northern Plateau. She even had old man Lernen write this for me. See? There's no problem now, right?"

Fíliya said with a light laugh.

Sense's feelings were a mix of complicated emotions. Of course, she didn't want someone as young as Fíliya, who hadn't even obtained her First-Class Mage certification, to go and encounter those powerful demons so soon.

But since Lady Serie herself had approved it, there was nothing more she could say.
