Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: Mid-Tier Takedown

Chapter 11: Mid-Tier Takedown

The chemical factory loomed on Evergreen's outskirts, its concrete walls stained with decades of rust and runoff, a brutalist relic reeking of ammonia and wet earth. Jax crouched behind a rusted fence, the evening chill biting through his jacket as he twirled his knife, its blade a silver flicker against the fading light. The low hum from inside the factory vibrated in his bones, a sign of Butterfly activity. His sketchbook, tucked in his pocket, held the warehouse map, its 'X' now a promise of violence. The solitude was gone, replaced by a cautious strategy that kept his pulse steady but his nerves taut.

"Sarcasm levels rising, but this place is a death trap," he muttered, wiping sweat from his brow despite the cold. "From chaos to date night, but first, I'm crashing this parasite party."

He adjusted his comms, the earpiece crackling as Harcourt's voice came through, sharp and strained.

"Six hostiles is a high-danger scenario, Jax. You have max cumulate. We're remote support only. Get done."

Jax grimaced, the cold seeping into his boots as he twirled his knife faster.

"Yeah, tell me about it. I feel like an ice cube about to get microwaved. I'm going in fast—main vent stack on the roof. Cover fire if this goes south. If it goes north, I'm summoning a brute."

Adebayo's voice followed, softer but firm.

"Think first, Jax. This is bigger than the pickpockets."

[SYSTEM: DANGER LEVEL CONFIRMED: HIGH.]

[MULTI-SUMMON (3) AUTHORIZED.]

[CUMULATE AT 3.]

Jax ran his thumb over his knife's blade, the cool steel grounding him. His plan was set: a chaotic distraction, then a high-impact strike. He whispered into the comms,

"I hit the vent, draw them out. If it's clear, I'm dropping Soldier Boy to blast the parasites."

He climbed the fence, its links groaning, and hauled himself onto the roof, his heart pounding a steady rhythm. The vent entrance loomed ten feet away, its rusted grille a gateway to the fight he'd been building toward.

Dropping through the vent, Jax landed on a catwalk with a spray of dust and metal, the factory's central floor sprawling below. Six Butterfly goons surrounded a towering figure—the Butterfly Alpha, its chitinous armor glinting, its red eyes glowing like embers in the dim light. Its voice boomed, distorted and hissing.

"Crush all resistance!"

[SYSTEM: QUEST ALERT.]

[NEUTRALIZE BUTTERFLY ALPHA.]

[DANGER LEVEL: HIGH.]

[OBJECTIVE: EXECUTE SUMMON STRATEGY.]

The goons rushed him, their tech-enhanced limbs crackling with energy. Jax didn't hesitate, the system flaring with heat as he activated his summon.

[SYSTEM: SUMMONING INITIATED.]

[TARGET: SOLDIER BOY (STRENGTH ECHO).]

[COMMAND: BLAST PARASITES ON THE PERIMETER. CLEAR THE RECRUITS.]

[DURATION: 5 MINUTES.]

A patriotic yellow light erupted, and Soldier Boy materialized, his shield gleaming, his sneer pure arrogance.

"America's finest, baby! These punks ain't worth my time, kid," he bellowed, unleashing a searing energy blast from his chest, vaporizing the goons in a fiery arc. The strength echo flooded Jax, his muscles tightening with borrowed power.

The Alpha leapt onto the catwalk, tackling Jax and Soldier Boy with terrifying speed. Pain seared through Jax's ribs as he hit the metal, the Alpha's maw opening to reveal jagged teeth, its breath a sickening mix of bio-matter and ozone. "Desperate to victorious, here we go," he thought, scrambling to his feet.

"Soldier Boy! Blast the main support column—make it collapse on the Alpha!" Jax screamed, his voice raw as he dodged a claw swipe.

Soldier Boy pivoted, his chest glowing white-hot, and fired a concentrated beam at the column. The concrete groaned, then shattered, the catwalk collapsing in a roar of debris. Jax rolled clear as the Alpha was buried under tons of rubble, its hissing cut short.

[SYSTEM: VICTORY: BUTTERFLY ALPHA DEFEATED.]

[SUMMON ECHO ABSORPTION SUCCESS: SOLDIER BOY.]

[STRENGTH +1. CURRENT STATS: STRENGTH 3, AGILITY 4, CONSTITUTION 2, WILLPOWER 2.]

[REWARD: CLIMAX BATTLE. +50 SP.]

[CURRENT SP: 165.]

Jax coughed, dust coating his throat, his body aching but alive. The Alpha's dying whisper echoed from the rubble: "Vought… always… returns…" A cold fury surged in Jax, the words a taunt of an endless war. He stumbled to the pickup truck outside, the air heavy with burning concrete and ozone. Patching cuts with medical tape, he pulled up the system interface, his mind racing with empowered reflection.

[SYSTEM: UPGRADE SHOP.]

[IMPROVED CONTROL (-5% ROGUE CHANCE) AVAILABLE: COST 20 SP.]

"Cate resisted, Soldier Boy didn't. Control's the key," he thought, selecting the upgrade. The system hummed, a soothing confirmation.

[SYSTEM: SPEND 20 SP CONFIRMED.]

[IMPROVED CONTROL (-5% ROGUE CHANCE) APPLIED.]

[CURRENT ROGUE CHANCE: REDUCED BY 5% ACROSS ALL SUMMONS.]

[CURRENT SP: 145.]

Jax tested his Strength 3, bending a rusty pipe into a hook with ease, the metal's groan intoxicating. He opened his comms, his voice crisp.

"Harcourt, Alpha's down. Factory's secured. Send extraction."

Harcourt's reply was dry.

"No screw-ups. Good work, Reed."

Jax climbed out of the truck, the takeout grime on his jacket a badge of survival. He walked into the night, his mind buzzing with Strength 3 and the promise of a normal encounter—a break from the chaos, maybe even a date.

[SYSTEM: RANDOM FLAVOR: ALPHA'S LEAK DETECTED.]
