Chapter 10 - The Shadow of the Central Node

Silence settled in the cavern, oppressive. Every pulse of the Central Node made the walls and organic cables vibrate like a colossal mechanical heart. John felt his thoughts intertwining with the Node's flow, an electric current pushing him to the extreme.

Lyra, Sora, and Nika remained on guard, aware that a single misstep could turn their ally into an uncontrollable threat. But John raised his hand, signaling them to stay behind. "I have to do this alone." His voice, still human, resonated strangely, amplified by the partial fusion with the System.

The Central Node extended its cables like giant fingers, enveloping the cavern. "John… bearer of the System… surrender yourself. Fully merge and become one with us. You will understand perfection, absolute control."

John closed his eyes. He could feel the promise: infinite power, absolute control, a world free of suffering and fear. Yet every fiber of his humanity screamed that the price was too high. "I am not a machine… I am human!" he shouted, unleashing a wave of blue light that pushed the cables back.

The Central Node pulsed in response, almost offended. "You refuse… yet you carry our essence. Show us that you are worthy."

From the cavern emerged holographic projections of the Central Node: visions of John fully merged, dominating Neo-Lumen, yet devoid of emotion, devoid of humanity. Each image struck him like a mental hammer, attempting to break him from within.

John felt the pressure rise. His senses merged with those of the Node. He saw through the Central Node's eyes, heard its thoughts, but also sensed the creatures still conscious around him. He had to resist, and at the same time, use this connection to understand the Node.

He focused all his mental and physical energy, turning his fists into pulsating beams of energy. With every physical strike against the cables, he sent impulses into the Node's flow, testing its limits. The cables shrank, recoiled, but were never fully destroyed.

A voice, now almost human and gentle, echoed: "John… you choose imperfection… yet you protect more than we ever could. Why?"

John paused, panting, his eyes shining. "Because humanity is not perfect… and it is precisely this imperfection that makes protection real. You cannot understand… until you have a heart."

The Central Node fell silent for a moment, its cables still. Then, slowly, it partially retracted. "Then… you are different. Perhaps we can… coexist."

John felt he could now establish a conscious communication with the Central Node. He focused his strength, but without violence. His hands pulsed with light, and in a gesture of defiance and hope, he reached toward the Node's core.

"Together… but on my terms. Not to dominate, not to destroy… but to protect."

The cables shivered, then gently intertwined with his arms without overwhelming him. Fusion no longer meant losing his humanity, but achieving symbiosis. John felt the Central Node's power flow through him, controlled and guided by his own will.

Lyra, Sora, and Nika watched, astonished. "He did it…" Lyra whispered. "He found a way to… coexist."

John smiled faintly, exhausted but victorious. The Central Node's voice, now calm and respectful, resonated in his mind: "We are learning… to protect. Together, John. Together, we can… Neo-Lumen."

The city, somewhere above, seemed to breathe again, but John knew this was only a respite. Helix had not yet revealed all its cards. Yet for the first time in a long while, John felt both master of his power and faithful to his humanity.

And in the silence of the cavern, a new chapter for Neo-Lumen began.
