Chapter 15 - Am i so useless?

The first class i wanted to try was magic, who wouldn't want to?

From the hand gestures to the strings created with mana that made the impossible become possible, it was the first thing i saw that showed me how different this world was.

Seeing all these weird tricks with mana made me curious how to use it myself. My newly acquired mana came without me knowing how to use it so atleast some tips would help me.

Or atleast i thought so..

"Please infuse these orbs with your mana."

Everyone recieved a pale crystal orb from the professor a few minutes prior.

I expected atleast some sort of instruction or help but it looked as though no one had a problem with infusing it with mana.

Putting my hands on the orb i felt its cold glassy surface.

'From what i remember, in manga they usually had to picture the flow of mana in their head or something.'

Closing my eyes i started to think of mana as the very same strings i saw many times.

It felt as if i was squeezing something out of my body for a few moments before i went back to doing nothing.

'i guess it's not that easy.'

For everyone it came as natural as breathing but they probably couldn't explain it for a person like me.

What would one do when someone asked them how to breathe? They would just look at you like an idiot and move on.

So i just feigned ignorance and didn't do anything until the end of the class.

The only part that i listened to was when she explained the origin of mana.

Originally mana was created inside the rift and couldn't leak out due to some sort of natural barrier but after humans started to go inside the rift their bodies absorbed the mana like some sponge.

Although there were limits which couldn't be broken otherwise one would enter a state of mana overload.

I wouldn't have to worry about that for a while with my abilities i think.

'i hope the next lessons arent as useless as this one.'

With my hopes up, i set out towards the next class.

*

'this is some crap'

All three lessons i've had so far were about efficient mana manipulation and enchanting your senses.

During the survival class we were supposed to focus our mana on our five senses which i didn't really have to.

My senses by themself were so sharp that they could rival a grade 8.

I wasn't sure if it would make any difference in the future.

If i wouldn't be able to figure out how to use mana then i would be either stuck on grade 9 or train for who knows how long to achieve a grade 1.

'i wonder how strong i need to be to save this world.'

God didn't tell me anything about what would happen to this world, just that a catastrophe should happen in a few years.

He could have given atleast a hint but there must be some sort of limitation as to what he could say.

'maybe its like a butterfly effect'

By saying to me what would happen the event could either change or even worsen making me unable to do anything against it.

'too much thoughts.'

My head was already starting to hurt from all this internal monologue.

Not mentioning the combat lesson which i completely flunked.

By getting into the prestige class people thought of me as some sort of talented fighter but i guess my only strenght lies in endurance.

All we had to do was spar and my partner was a girl with long white hair and crystal blue eyes which could pierce anyone's soul.

She was one of the ice twins from the entrance ceremony and the number 4 of prestige class while i placed on a measily 20th place stood stunned by my matchup.

It was then that i noticed that the prestige class uniforms were different.

Although the academy had the word 'United' in it, it still was a place of rivalry between different orders.

People like me without any official political stance wore a simple dull dark uniforms while she for example wore light blue uniform representing the colors of Frigora.

I didn't have time to marvel at her uniform as the professors hand came down with a swish and my body toppled backwards as she held her wooden sword at my neck.

'fast'

I thought as she retreated the sword and muttered something under her breath.

'too slow'

Who was i to disagree? I thought after trying to defeat her four times more resulting in me getting smacked in the head.

In that encounter i understood fully just how important mana was to ones growth.

Elizabeth who was the one picking me her as a partner looked at me somewhat dissapointed but it wouldn't stop me from asking her to teach me how to control mana.

*

I was walking to the rift exploration class when i noticed a group of people blocking my path.

Looking up i saw three guys standing shoulder to shoulder with the most smug faces i ever seen, a realization hit me after i saw them wearing the same blood red uniforms.

'is this the typical thug scenario?'

They clearly were blocking my path and their gazes were directed towards me so..

One of them stepped forward, probably their leader, and leaned down as if mocking my height.

"Hey, arent you that guy who got lucky and got accepted into the prestige class?"

He said to me while emphatizing the word lucky in the most arrogant way.

'it is!'

"Well? Are you going to answer me or did cat get your tongue?"

His words were followed by a pair of chuckles from behind.

Not giving them any attention i looked back at their leader who still had his smug expression on his face.

"I wish it got yours, your breath is killing me."

"Huh?"

Confusion spread all over his face while his friends went quiet.

"What? Aren't you going to say anything? You're the one lucky i actually want to talk with a dumbass like you, look at you staring at me like a donkey."

All three of them stared at each other completely lost as their leader went past me cursing under his breath.

The lackeys followed after him looking back with weird eyes which seemed to be pitying me?

'what a bunch of weirdoes, i totally scared them'

Everyone i insulted always went away without responding back seemingly stunned by my brilliance of coming up with responses that no one ever dared to talk back.

I guess some things are still the same even if im somewhere else.

Standing proudly i noticed Marco right behind me who was giving me weird looks which i ignored as i entered the class and sat down at the front row.

'finally something that's not related to mana, hopefully'

Everyone slowly gathered not long before the class was filled to the brim with all the first years.

Proffesor Anvil stood in front of the blackboard with a chalk in hand waiting for everyone to quiet down while tapping the board a few times to gather attention.

"Hello everyone, today we will talk about how the laws of the rift work."

He turned to the board while starting to draw three different drawings.

"The first rule and the most common one which most of you know by now is that you cannot enter it without being a delver."

Upom hearing this, someone raised their hand as if trying to touch the ceiling itself.

Noticing this, the proffesor gestured for them to ask with a simple. "yes?"

"If we can't enter without being a delver then what about those born inside it?"

"That's a good question."

He responded with a smile.

"You see.." he gestured at crude drawing of the rift. "When being born in the rift, the newborn's bodies adapt to the enviroment making their resistance to mana overload stronger, but it doesn't completely negate it which is why we need to either get stronger or learn how to not absorb more mana."

"And how do you do that?"

The same student kept asking.

"That's where the second rule comes in."

- Tap.

He tapped at the drawing of a temple of sorts.

"You need to complete trials."

'oh?'

I leaned in curiosity.

"The trials are mandatory for every person in the rift so completing one can result in you getting a 'Wish'.

The wish that you recieve is based on what you say, do, or how you act during the trial and it can only influence yourself, not others."

"And the third law is about the usage of such wish."

He looked at the entire class.

"After recieving the wish, you forget everything that happened during the trial except recieving the wish, it was most likely made that way so no one could replicate others, sorry to dissapoint you."

He checked his wrist for a few moments before giving a little bow.

"That should be all for today i suppose, thank you for listening and see you tomorrow."
