"The Hokage has come, mother. Do what I said, as long as everything goes as planned, Izumi will be safe." I said, making her nod as she got up, fixing her clothes as Itzumi and I sat on the couch.
The Hokage and his guards returned with my mother as I lay my head onto Itzumi's lap, and he sat down on the other couch as my mother sat in the chair. "Third Hokage, what can I do for you?" My mother asked as I watched on from Izumi's lap.
Trying to act like my age, but the Third Hokage looked at me for a moment and spoke. "I wanted to check up on Izumi and see if she had a place to stay." He said, making Izumi smile before speaking. "Lord Hokage, Yuko, and Kume have been very kind to me, and I wish to stay here with them. They have helped me greatly in this hard time." She said, looking down sadly as she played with my hair.
"It looks like you are close to Kume, Izumi." The Third said, making Izumi nod and smile. "He has become my light in this dark time." She said, making him raise an eyebrow, as I just smiled at him. "Well, if there is anything you need from me or the village, don't mind asking. We should lend a hand when our people are in trouble." He said before standing up.
I knew he was only checking in on her or us, depending on what kind of information he had, as he spoke, standing up. "Kume, do you mind walking me to the door. My old bones don't work like they used to." He said, making my mind try to figure out why he would ask for me and not Itzumi.
Getting up and smiling as I nodded, but my mind was thinking about every way he could ask to get information out of me as I helped him walk. As we entered the hallway, he spoke. "So, Kume, I heard you ran around today making sure that people knew Izumi hadn't died. May I know why?" He asked, making me smile.
"Izumi is a kind big sister. I wanted those who are close to her to know that it just happens when other mothers are around. I take it they talked about it after I left." I said, scratching the back of my head, making him nod with a gentle smile.
"How did you survive the attack the masked man did?" He asked as I stopped and looked up at him. "I tripped and fell the moment he lunched it. The explosion sent me flying." I said as he looked at me for a moment as I opened the door, and he nodded. "Have a good night, Kume." He said, patting my head as I nodded.
As he walked out, I spoke up. "Third Hokage, can I ask you something?" I said, making him and his guards turn around. "Go ahead, Kume." He said as I nodded.
"Why is Naruto mistreated even though he is the son of the Fourth Hokage, who died saving this village?" I said, making the three freeze as the Third Hokage spoke. "How do you know if he is the son of the Fourth Hokage?" He asked as I placed my finger on my chin, thinking before I spoke.
"Well, he looks a lot like him on top of him having the last name as the Fourth Hokage's wife, who was close to giving birth when the Nine-Tails attacked. And the village has a history of making Uzumaki the hosts for them. I believe the first Hokage's wife was both of those." I said, making the Third Hokage look at me in wonder.
"So I am 90% sure he is the son of the Fourth. So why is he cast out? Don't you fear that his pain and suffering may lead to him becoming unstable? Wouldn't it be best to give him a place to live and be helped after all his parents died for the village? If the village is doing it to protect him, then that sounds dumb to me." I finished saying.
"Well, Naruto's life may be hard, but he isn't suffering to the extent that the last Uchiha did." The Third said, making me shake my head in disagreement. "He hasn't known the love of a family, and on top of the village hating him, I see him suffering for nothing. It's just stupid in my eyes, that's all. One wrong step, and he would become consumed with anger and hatred for something that could be easily changed with a family that was willing to accept him, like the Sarutobi clan. That's just how I feel, Hokage." I said bowing.
"Have a safe night, Lord Hokage. It's my bedtime now." I said, turning around as he waved me off, and he and his guards started to walk away as I closed the door. "Is it okay for him to say those things? Don't we have a standing order, Lord Hokage?" One of his guards said, making the Third look at the door before shaking his head.
"He is just wondering, that's all. The fact that he can put the pieces together demonstrates that he has a great ability to think. I dare say he will become a fine Hidden Leaf Shinobi. Send someone to watch over Naruto. If his suffering becomes too much, we need to fix that, as Kume isn't wrong for his way of thinking. It would be a disgrace to him and her if their son suffers because of my foolishness." The Third Hokage said.
The Third found an interesting young one. As he smiled, he could tell Kume had a hand in the plan to ensure that Izumi was not killed, or at least made the village put their support behind her. Did he know of Itachi's mission, or was he just overthinking and did it to be on the safe side? He couldn't tell right now, but he was looking forward to Kume's life as a Shinobi.
I watched the group leave through the window. I hoped I was able to help Naruto somewhat; even if not, I don't mind being a friend to him after the Academy starts. I walked into the living room, where I saw my mother and Izumi naked, which made me smile.
