Chapter 1 - The Night Before

The curtain swayed softly, propelled by the cool morning breeze, as the golden rays of the sun filtered through the gaps, bathing the room in a warm radiance. The soft light illuminated the elegant brown-red furniture and the inviting golden couch, while the golden-yellow paint that adorned the walls created a minimalist yet cozy ambiance. It was a beautiful morning, one that promised excitement and the thrill of change.

On a massive bed designed for a small gathering, perhaps accommodating not just one but a whole family for a weekend retreat, a figure stirred beneath the thick blankets. The bed was plush, almost oceanic in its vastness, providing more than enough space for the occupant to stretch out fully.

The sound of an alarm clock shattered the early morning tranquility, ringing insistently from the side table. Over the digital display, the time flashed, along with a few notes scribbled on its tiny screen.

8:30 AM — Time to get up.

"Argh!" came a groan from under the layers of comfort. A white arm, pale against the dark duvet, emerged to silence the persistent beeping by tapping the top of the timer, plunging the room back into a peaceful silence. After a moment's hesitation, the blankets were pushed aside, and the figure finally sat up.

He was tall, standing at around six feet two, with short, wavy black hair teetering on the edge of a messy bedhead look, his chin just barely shadowed by a hint of a beard. His deep brown eyes blinked against the brightness, a straight nose sat above pink lips that formed an angular chin—handsome and subtly muscular. He looked like someone who had just stepped out of a magazine, by all accounts.

As he rubbed the sleep from his eyes, a frown etched across his face, but it was fleeting. With a deep breath, the remnants of sleep melted away, replaced by a broad smile that lit up his features, reflecting a blend of anticipation and joy.

And why was he so elated? Let's dive a bit deeper into his thoughts.

...TREVOUR'S POV..

My name is Trevour, and if you're curious about my bubbling happiness, it's because tomorrow is my graduation day. Yes, the day I have been working towards for the last five long years is finally here! After sleepless nights spent pouring over textbooks and endless hours of assignments, graduation day is just around the corner.

But that's not all. The cherry on top of this monumental sundae is that my family is coming to celebrate with me. After years of being apart due to their hectic schedules and my own commitments, I finally get a chance to see my parents and my older brother. It feels surreal!

You might wonder why I haven't seen them more often when I get breaks. The truth is, my parents have been tied up with work, traveling to seal contracts, immersed in their own careers. My brother, an extraordinary individual in his own right, has recently ventured into starting his own company, which takes up all his time too. I've spent years navigating life without them nearby, but it does nothing to diminish my excitement for tomorrow.

Suddenly, a ringing tone cut through the air, its impatient ring pulling me back to reality. I turned to reach for my phone, flipping it face up to check who was calling.

Mom!

"Oh, my mom is calling," I muttered, my voice brightening with delight as I answered.

"Hello, mummy! Good morning!" I exclaimed, unable to contain my enthusiasm.

"Good morning, son. I hope you're awake!" came the familiar voice, rich with warmth that instantly soothed my soul.

"Yeah... ha ha," I laughed sheepishly, running a hand through my tousled hair, feeling a tad embarrassed for still being in bed at this hour.

"No worries, dear. I wanted to check in on you. Unfortunately, we can't fly over this morning, but we will take a flight tonight and arrive first thing in the morning for your graduation," she explained, her tone tinged with regret.

That was a punch to the gut. "... okay, no problem," I sighed, the brief hope I had felt deflating. It seemed like every time I planned something special, a hitch would find its way into the mix.

"I'm so sorry, dear. I know you had everything arranged for us, but something urgent popped up. Please don't be angry at mama," she pleaded, her voice laced with genuine concern.

"Not at all! It's fine! Um, is elder bro coming?" I asked, my voice tinged with hope—bathed in the idea that seeing him would brighten my day.

"Sup, twin! How's it going?" A rich, deep voice broke through the speaker, radiating confidence.

"Oh, bro, I... I'm great, thank you," I stammered slightly, a smile creeping across my face. My brother had always been a legend in my eyes....a person of immense achievement and capability, living up to the high expectations he set for himself.

He was a prodigy, ranked first in the statewide SATs, gaining entry to Harvard. He had started a company even while studying there, made his first million before graduation, and was now on the path to obtain his master's degree. He seemed to excel at everything effortlessly, an impossibly high bar that I often gazed up toward, albeit with pride.

"That's awesome! Sorry to disappoint you, but we'll be there to celebrate with you tomorrow! Dad's in the bathroom....you can't hear from him now. Have a fantastic day!"

"Thanks, bro!" I replied, my earlier grievances fading away, lightening my mood considerably. It always amazed me how just hearing his voice could lift my spirits.

"Bye, dear," Mom chimed in.

"Bye! Enjoy your day and don't forget to rest!" I reminded her with a teasing hint in my tone.

"Oh, I will, ha ha!" she laughed, her voice fading as she ended the call.

"You always say that," I murmured to myself, a grin breaking on my face.

Letting out a contented sigh, I tossed my phone back onto the bed. With urgency and excitement weaving through me, I knew it was time to shower and prepare for the day ahead.

Just as I was about to leap off the bed, a sudden...

"Arrhhhhhhhh!"

I jumped, nearly tumbling off the bed in fright. "Jesus Christ, Uncle! You scared the daylights out of me!" I gasped, clutching my chest as my heart raced, still catching my breath.

Standing at the door was my uncle, arms crossed tightly over his chest, reading glasses perched on his nose, staring intently....a gaze that felt both penetrating and ominous.

"Er... Um... Uncle, what are you staring at me for?" I stuttered, caught off guard by his intense scrutiny.

"...." No answer, just an unyielding expression.

"Uncle…" I began to inquire again, but his interruption cut me off.

"Get yourself cleaned up and meet us downstairs for breakfast," he ordered in a flat tone before turning on his heel and walking away, as if our odd interaction was completely normal.

"Er... okay? That was freaking weird!" I blurted out, bemusement coloring my voice.

I still felt jittery from the sudden encounter as I rubbed my chest, still hearting racing...a mix of adrenaline and confusion as I headed into the bathroom.

The reflection in the mirror showed a young man half-awake, but the excitement of the day ahead began to weave through my thoughts. Today was special; it was my day of transition. Fastening my thoughts on the inevitability of my graduation the next day filled me with warmth and purpose, like a fire igniting from within...a profound shift from the student I had been to the new phase of life that awaited me.

As I lathered soap into my hair, the anticipation bubbled up further, welcoming the potential of new beginnings. Tomorrow would mark the end of the chapter where I had been solely reliant on my education and the people around me. Now, it was time to venture into a world filled with greater responsibilities and opportunities.

With thoughts of my family's arrival and the celebration that awaited swirling around in my mind, I couldn't help but feel that whatever obstacles might crop up today, tomorrow would be the start of everything wonderful. The golden rays of the morning sun poured through the window, shining down like a blessing as I wrapped a towel around my waist and readied myself for breakfast, eager for what the day would bring.
