At the huge indoor tropical-beach park, Han Yiren and two of her friends were helping little Yanyan dig in the sand.
They were all close friends with Liang Canwen's sister-in-law, Li Wenning. On weekends, Wenning often brought the child to play with them and called it "team babysitting." Whenever her older sister and brother-in-law gave her some babysitting money, she would split it among her friends.
"Daddy!"
The little girl saw Liang Canwen approaching, dropped her shovel, and ran toward him with open arms.
The three girls looked up at the man walking over—so this was the brother-in-law Wenning always talked about?
Maya Hanyu tugged at Gulire Reina's sleeve. "Hey Reina, he's actually kind of handsome!"
Reina grinned. "No wonder Wenning keeps mentioning him."
Han Yiren sighed. "Calm down, you two, don't embarrass me."
Unlike her excitable friends, Han Yiren—who was from Korea and knew a lot about fashion—was quietly sizing Liang Canwen up. His clothes weren't luxury brands she recognized, but the watch on his wrist definitely was: Patek Philippe. Combined with the rumor that he drove a Bentley, she concluded the man clearly had means.
Liang Canwen scooped his daughter into his arms. "Having fun?"
Yanyan nodded. "Uh-huh! The aunties bought me so many treats!"
Wenning introduced her friends. "This is Han Yiren from Korea, Hanyu Maya from Japan, and Gulire Reina from Xinjiang."
All three smiled politely. "Hello, Mr. Liang."
Liang Canwen greeted them with a brief, courteous smile—trying not to stare too long. "You've all been helping Wenning look after Yanyan. I really appreciate it. I didn't realize my sister-in-law's classmates were such kind and capable people."
Maya and Reina became shy, leaving Yiren to speak for them. "Yanyan's adorable. We like spending time with her."
Liang Canwen nodded. "Wenning mentioned someone's birthday today—whose is it?"
"Yiren's! She's turning 22."
"Happy birthday, Yiren."
"Thank you, Mr. Liang."
Since the girls had been helping with childcare, Liang Canwen decided to treat everyone. "You've all helped my family a lot. Let me buy dinner to celebrate Yiren's birthday—my treat."
The friends looked at one another; Wenning waited for their answer. Before they could decide, Yanyan hugged Yiren's leg and cheered, "Let's go eat cake, Auntie Yiren!"
Yiren smiled and patted her head. "All right, cake it is."
"Yay!"
Liang Canwen said, "Go change; I'll wait in the parking lot." He turned away quickly—better to talk once everyone was dressed.
A little later, the four girls and the child came out in matching but differently colored summer dresses. As dancers, they all had graceful figures and lively energy, drawing plenty of attention as they walked.
When a Bentley SUV pulled up, onlookers stared in awe. Even the three friends were surprised to see the luxury car with their own eyes.
Maya gasped and grabbed Yiren's arm. Yiren whispered dryly, "Calm down. He's Wenning's brother-in-law, not yours."
Maya laughed. "I wish I had a brother-in-law who drove a Bentley."
Reina joked, "He's newly divorced—you could always introduce him to your sister."
"I don't have a sister."
"Then maybe yourself."
"Careful—Wenning will kill you if she hears that."
Wenning counted heads. "Uh, there are five of us. That's over capacity."
Yiren teased, "Then our Japanese friend here can take a taxi."
"No way! I'm riding in the famous Bentley!" Maya said, squeezing playfully past Yiren toward the car. Yiren stumbled in her heels and scolded her under her breath before catching herself and offering Liang Canwen an apologetic smile. "Sorry, just joking around."
Liang Canwen chuckled. "It's fine. Come on, everyone—let's go. The restaurant isn't far."
The three friends sat in the back with Yanyan, while Wenning took the passenger seat. As the Bentley drove off carrying four lively young women and a cheerful little girl, several bystanders sighed enviously.
"Some guys have all the luck," someone muttered. "When it rains, it pours."
