Because Peter had taken the role that was originally supposed to be his—and even had the nerve to wear the expensive Spider-Man costume he himself had ordered—Flash was being unbelievably harsh during rehearsal.
Judging by Flash's attitude, you'd think he was hoping Peter really was the real Spider-Man.
Peter: …
Faced with this intense "love" from a fan, he honestly didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
Still, watching Flash stomp around in frustration yet unable to do anything about it brought Peter a surprising amount of extra joy amid the misery.
Was this what they called mutual torment?
——
Soon, the day of the school anniversary arrived.
The entire school had been decorated.
But the liveliest place of all was definitely the main auditorium of Midtown Tech.
At the front of the hall sat several important figures.
The Queens borough chief, city council members, board members of well-known companies…
But the ones who drew the most attention were undoubtedly "Iron Man" Tony Stark and his assistant, Stark Industries' executive director Pepper Potts.
Even if you combined everyone else there, none of them carried as much weight as that single pair.
Which was probably why so many people had shown up today.
After all, if anyone could get a connection to Stark Industries, their company could expand several times over in a short span—definitely not impossible.
Of course, Peter's group wasn't the only performance today.
It was the school anniversary plus New Year's.
Right now, a group of boys and girls were doing a high-energy dance on stage.
Peter, meanwhile, was in the backstage dressing room with Betty and the others.
He really didn't need much makeup. His whole body would be covered by the Spider-Man costume anyway, and he only needed to lift the mask at the very end. A bit of powder to fix the lighting was enough.
Ned stood beside him, running a hand over the costume fabric with envy."This suit is insanely well-made. Flash really didn't hold back."
At that moment, Betty walked over.
"Hey, Ned, could I talk to Peter for a minute?"
"Of course."Ned wiggled his eyebrows at Peter before strolling off dramatically.
Peter, of course, understood what Ned meant.
He turned to Betty.
She was wearing a black skintight catsuit, with white fur around her wrists and ankles, and a mask on her face—mysterious and a little seductive.
No one had expected this. Betty was small, and her usual style was cute and sweet. No one imagined she was… so well-built.
You really couldn't tell at all.
Especially now, with this black bodysuit outlining every curve.
Peter had to admit—it definitely hit his weak spot.
"Is something wrong, Betty?" Peter asked, confused. They should've finished all rehearsals already.
Betty glanced behind her, then stepped a little closer.
Looking at Peter's face, her eyes grew slightly unfocused.
She was in the same year as Peter and Ned, but she had never heard his name before.
Peter wasn't exactly someone with a strong presence at school.
But lately, news about Peter had grown more and more frequent, which finally drew her attention.
A 15-year-old intern at Stark Industries… who could even get Stark Industries to make a huge donation to the school. That alone showed he was highly capable—and highly valued.
And after spending these past few days rehearsing with him, she'd had plenty of chances to observe him up close.
She discovered that Peter was indeed an outstanding, charming boy.
He hadn't been like this originally.
But all the Spider-Men who had possessed him had left traces of their personalities behind.
As a result, Peter now carried a bit of maturity and composure far beyond his age.
And that kind of aura was devastatingly attractive to certain girls his age.
Peter leaned back slightly. "Betty?"
"Huh?"Betty snapped out of her daze, her cheeks flushing red. She twisted her fingers nervously."I—I had an idea…"
"What idea? You can just say it."
"Well… later, near the end of our performance, maybe we could make a small change…" Betty said, fidgeting.
Peter was still confused.
He truly had no clue what she was hinting at or what she wanted.
"Oh—" Peter was about to ask more clearly—
When suddenly, his spider-sense jolted violently.
In a flash, he saw a figure—wearing armor that looked like some kind of explosion-resistant suit.In one hand was a metal round shield almost like Captain America's.On his back were a compound bow and a quiver. At his waist hung a sword.
A fully armed silhouette.
"So… do you understand?"Betty was still whispering her proposed plan, her face turning redder and redder, as though she was breaking some forbidden rule.
"Mhm, yeah," Peter replied absentmindedly, brows furrowed as he searched his mind for information about that figure.
Shield + sword + bow + blast-proof armor?
This bizarre combo… he was sure he didn't know anyone like that.
But if the spider-sense warned him, then the person would definitely appear—and they were coming for him.
Of that, he was certain.
So far, whenever his spider-sense triggered, it had never once been wrong.
Realizing a possible super-villain might be coming for him next made Peter's heart pound uneasily.
There were two thousand teachers and students gathered in the auditorium. If a villain attacked here… the casualties would be unimaginable.
The thought made Peter unable to sit still.
"Betty," he interrupted softly, "I'm going to the restroom. You rest for a bit."
"Oh… okay."Betty watched Peter's departing back, her eyes shimmering slightly.
Peter didn't notice at all.He rushed into the restroom, pulled off the detachable gloves of his Spider-Man suit, and revealed the transformation watch beneath.
He tapped the screen—bringing up the call button.
Tony Stark.
"Come on, come on, come on—pick up…"
But Tony Stark, in the front row with Pepper Potts—half watching the performance, half fending off overeager guests—dismissed the call instantly when FRIDAY notified him.
He thought Peter was calling to complain again.
Peter had already called him several times over the past two days because of this event.
But Tony was absolutely committed to seeing it play out.
It was way too entertaining.
Meanwhile—
At the outer wall of Midtown Tech, a figure clad in high-tech alloy armor vaulted over.
"Target: Spider-Man of Midtown Tech.Suspected location confirmed.School anniversary… main auditorium…Target locked.Initiating operation."
