Fun was supposed to be easy. At least, that's what I kept telling myself.

The buzz from the drinks was doing its job—loosening the tight knot in my shoulders, silencing that nagging voice that whispered I didn't fit in here.

Celeste's laughter rang out above the thumping bass, her boyfriend's arm wrapped possessively around her waist. The club pulsed with life, bodies moving in sync under the strobing lights, creating waves of energy that should have swept me up.

The alcohol had me relaxed enough to ignore the stares. For once, I actually felt like I belonged in the moment.

Celeste's boyfriend's friend had shown up. Yoel, his name was.

Tall, sharp-dressed, maybe trying a little too hard, but pleasant enough company.

I'd given him a handshake and a courteous smile before turning my attention back to the dance floor, hoping he'd read the signal.

He hadn't.

His gaze lingered on me like a weight I couldn't shake.

I knew this dance by heart.
