The wind outside Dungeon City was strangely calm that morning. For the first time in days, the streets were quiet. The usual chatter of adventurers had dulled; even the smell of roasted bread from the stalls seemed faint. It was as if the city itself was holding its breath.
Kai stood on the balcony of his small room, watching the sun rise over the jagged skyline. His arm was still bandaged from the last dungeon run—a reminder of how close he had come to death. The faint, silver light glinted against his skin.
"System," he muttered, exhaling deeply. "Show me my status."

Kai frowned. Forty-eight hours… huh? That wasn't much time. He still didn't even understand what it meant to stabilize a Fire Elemental Core.
He clenched his fist, feeling a faint warmth pulse beneath his palm. The burn mark from the previous dungeon run—the one that nearly took his arm—was glowing faintly. It wasn't painful, but it throbbed with a rhythm, as though something was alive inside him.
"Guess this is what awakening feels like," he said with a faint smirk. "If I can master this fire, maybe next time I won't have to crawl out of a dungeon half-dead."
Just then, a knock came at his door.
Knock. Knock.
Kai turned, expecting Gladis or maybe the nurse, but when he opened it, it was Gladiator.
The tall man stood there, his armor half-clipped, his massive sword slung over his shoulder. His usual stoic expression softened a little. "You look alive," he said flatly.
Kai chuckled. "Barely. The dungeon tried to eat me alive."
"You went alone," Gladiator replied, stepping into the room. "That was reckless."
"Yeah, well," Kai shrugged. "I needed to test my strength. Guess I overestimated myself."
Gladiator sighed, glancing around the messy room. "You have a lot to learn, Kai. But… Gladis told me about your fire."
Kai raised an eyebrow. "Oh, she did?"
Gladiator nodded. "She said she felt a heat wave burst through the dungeon's gate before you came out. That kind of energy doesn't happen by accident. You've awakened something rare—something dangerous."
Kai looked down at his hand again, flexing his fingers as a small flame flickered to life between them. It danced weakly, trembling like a candle flame. "Yeah," he said quietly. "But it's unstable. Every time I try to summon it, it feels like I'm burning from the inside."
Gladiator gave a small grunt. "Then it's time you learned to control it."
He motioned for Kai to follow him, and together they walked through the narrow streets of Dungeon City until they reached a large stone tower near the guild square. The entrance was sealed by thick iron gates, and carved above them were glowing letters that read: Training Chamber – Elemental Division.
"This is where dungeon fighters come to learn how to harness their awakened elements," Gladiator explained. "Fire, ice, wind, shadow—you name it. You'll be training here today."
Kai blinked. "And who's the teacher?"
"You'll find out soon enough," Gladiator replied, smirking slightly as he pushed open the heavy gate.
Inside, the air shimmered with heat. Streams of flame coiled through the air like living serpents. The walls pulsed with ancient runes, and in the center of the room stood a woman dressed in dark red armor. Her long, crimson hair flowed behind her like fire itself.
She turned as they entered, her eyes burning with intensity. "So this is the new one?"
Gladiator gave a short bow. "Yes, Master Ignara. He's the one who survived a solo dungeon run."
Ignara's gaze swept over Kai, judging him in silence. Her voice was sharp but controlled. "Fire users are reckless by nature," she said. "And they often die early. Tell me, boy, do you plan to be one of them?"
Kai met her gaze evenly. "Not if I can help it."
A smirk crossed her lips. "Good answer. Let's see if you can back it up."
She raised her hand, and instantly the ground split open in a circle around them. A ring of fire surrounded Kai, rising high like a burning cage. He felt the heat on his skin, but he refused to flinch.
"Lesson one," Ignara said, walking around him slowly. "Fire does not obey fear. If you hesitate, it will consume you."
"Got it," Kai replied, clenching his jaw.
"Lesson two," she continued, her tone sharp, "You don't control fire—it accepts you. So stop fighting it."
Kai closed his eyes, trying to focus. He could feel the flames dancing around him, their heat pulsing with the rhythm of his heartbeat. Sweat trickled down his temple as he exhaled slowly.
Don't fight it. Accept it.
The memory of the dungeon flashed through his mind—the chaos, the monsters, the near-death experience. The moment the fire erupted from him had been pure instinct, pure survival.
He took another deep breath, feeling the warmth crawl up his arm, into his chest, and down his spine. This time, he didn't resist. He let it flow.
The flames around him flared brighter, but instead of burning him, they bent toward him—circling his body like a living cloak.
Ignara's eyes widened slightly. "Not bad," she said. "You're learning faster than most."
Kai opened his eyes, now glowing faintly orange. "Feels… strange," he muttered. "Like it wants something from me."
"It does," Ignara replied. "Fire demands willpower. It feeds on your emotions. The stronger your resolve, the stronger your flame."
Kai nodded slowly. He could feel his heartbeat syncing with the fire. His breathing steadied. The flames began to twist into shapes—swords, spirals, even a bird of fire that spread its wings above him before fading into embers.
Gladiator chuckled quietly. "Looks like he's getting the hang of it."
Ignara crossed her arms. "Not quite. The real test begins now."
Before Kai could respond, she snapped her fingers, and the room transformed. The flames around him shifted into solid shapes—mock monsters made of living fire. They lunged toward him, teeth bared, claws outstretched.
"Control the fire, or be devoured by it!" Ignara shouted.
Kai raised his hand instinctively, and a wall of fire burst forth, meeting the first creature head-on. The explosion rocked the chamber, heat searing his face.
He ducked and rolled, slashing through another fire beast with a blade of flame that appeared in his grasp. Every strike felt natural, like his body already knew what to do.
This power… it's responding to me!
The air vibrated with heat and energy as the battle raged on. Each time he struck, the fire obeyed him more smoothly. The beasts disintegrated one after another, leaving trails of sparks.
Finally, the last creature lunged. Kai shouted, channeling all his energy into his fist. The flames swirled violently before exploding outward, engulfing the monster completely.
When the smoke cleared, the chamber was silent again. Kai stood at the center, breathing heavily, his body covered in sweat but his eyes blazing with triumph.
Ignara approached, nodding approvingly. "You've done well. The fire accepts you now."
Kai grinned weakly. "Good… because I was about to pass out."
Gladiator laughed, patting his shoulder. "You handled it like a pro. You're improving fast, Kai."

Kai stared at the glowing text in front of him, a grin spreading across his face. "Finally," he said. "Now we're talking."
Ignara gave him a faint smirk. "Don't get cocky. You've only taken your first step. The true fire within you is still sleeping. When you face the next dungeon… it'll awaken completely."
Kai nodded. "Then I'll be ready."
He turned to Gladiator, who smiled proudly. "You've come a long way since we found you, Kai. Keep going. The real fight's just getting started."
Kai looked down at his hand once more—the faint flicker of flame still burning gently on his palm. He could feel it now—not as a curse, but as a part of him.
And deep inside, he knew this was only the beginning.
