As everyone took their seats, Nick Fury began the meeting by playing a holographic video. On the screen, a red lizard appeared on a New York street, immediately followed by a fierce battle.
The footage ended with S.H.I.E.L.D. agents moving in to clean up the construction site.
"Friend, was that you?" Thor pointed at a red afterimage on the hologram and leaned toward Eller, whispering.
"Yeah. By the way, how did you get here?" Eller shot back.
Cole's son mentioned a banquet, Thor explained honestly, though a hint of dissatisfaction lingered in his voice. "I came because of that. But… I haven't seen a single roasted lamb leg or a drop of wine yet!"
Thor felt momentarily deceived—but he was still glad to see Eller. It was a simple reunion in his eyes.
Tony Stark, slouched against the backrest, complained unhappily.
"So… you wasted my time just to make me watch that Fox guy's battle footage again?"
Nick Fury sighed, then addressed the room calmly.
"Ladies and gentlemen, our world is in danger. Incidents like the Lizard Virus show that, without a united team, villains will wreak havoc unchecked."
His words were true—gathering forces could indeed reduce the damage caused by threats.
Yet Fury seemed to forget—or deliberately ignore—that this group was far from united.
"So… you think Hulk will reduce destruction?" Dr. Banner asked skeptically.
Ever since the Abomination incident, Banner had feared Hulk's raw destructive power. Not long ago, he had been hiding in a slum somewhere in a Third World country, trying to live quietly as a doctor—until S.H.I.E.L.D. tracked him down.
Fury replied patiently, "Dr. Banner, don't worry about Hulk causing damage. I've invited warriors capable of controlling him—Thor, the first warrior of Asgard, and Kamen Rider Geats, who once defeated Abomination."
Thor's pride swelled at the title "First Warrior of Asgard," while Eller realized his main role might be to help restrain Hulk alongside Thor. He simply nodded politely and greeted Banner, "Hello, Dr. Banner."
Banner returned the greeting with a polite nod. "Hello. Hulk mentioned he liked you last time."
Fury added a strategic incentive. "Also, by joining the Avengers, General Ross and his army won't be hunting you anymore."
That was enough to win over Banner. "I'll remain a science consultant for the team," he agreed.
With Banner reassured, Fury introduced the rest of the members:
"Some of you may not know each other yet, so here's a quick introduction:
Dr. Bruce Banner, capable of transforming into Hulk, a single man strong enough to rival an army.
Steve Rogers, Captain America, legendary veteran from World War II.
Tony Stark, Iron Man, a genius inventor.
Clint Barton, codename Hawkeye, elite S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.
Natasha Romanoff, codename Black Widow, elite S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.
Kamen Rider Geats, a masked Rider undefeated since debut.
Thor, first warrior of Norse mythology."
Captain America extended a hand to Tony. "Hello, Tony. I knew your father."
Tony, not even looking directly at him, replied coolly, "Yeah… he talked about you all the time."
Nick Fury quickly intervened, sensing the tension.
"You will form a team called the Avengers. Captain America will serve as Commander and lead you into battle."
Tony smirked, "Let an old popsicle command with WWII tactics. No objections—just stating facts."
Captain America frowned slightly but explained, "I'm adapting to modern life, learning modern ideas. I'm not living in the past."
Tony only gave a hinting, "We'll see."
Fury then led the team to a bookshelf.
"Wait… where's the food and wine?" Thor asked, suspicious he'd come to the wrong place.
Fury called out, "Coulson, bring up what we prepared."
Moments later, Coulson rolled in a cart loaded with food and wine. Thor nodded in satisfaction.
Fury pressed a button on the bookshelf, revealing an elevator large enough for two vans.
"Come on, everyone," he said. The elevator doors closed and descended deep underground.
When it reopened, a high-tech room awaited them. At the center stood a supercomputer, surrounded by a long conference table. A wall of high-definition screens displayed real-time information. Numerous corridors led to unknown rooms beyond.
Tony tapped the wall, marveling. "This hardness… it could withstand a nuclear bomb. Whose taxpayers' money did you spend on this?"
"Your friend preparing to build rockets," Fury snapped back.
"This was once a S.H.I.E.L.D. safe house," Fury continued. "After modernization, it's now the Avengers' Base. In addition to the central conference room, there are training rooms, storage areas, workshops, single dormitories, a restaurant—fully multifunctional."
Eller noticed Fury's careful budget planning. Banner, impressed, remarked, "Single dorms too? Excellent." He'd been used to sleeping on rotten mattresses in slums, living like an ascetic. Here, he might even resume his research in peace.
