Chapter 20: Finding a Lawyer

"I thought you were nocturnal, never appearing during daylight?"

In an empty low-rise building in Hell's Kitchen, Black Cat sat in a chair wearing a crop top and hot pants, addressing the fully-armored Batman.

"Also, dressed like that in broad daylight—are you planning to fight someone? Just so we're clear, I'm not getting in bed with you."

Batman's mouth twitched. He admitted Black Cat was indeed beautiful. The white crop top couldn't hide abs carved like a knife, while the upward-extending curves traced a strikingly soft arc.

Two slender, powerful legs crossed casually. Round, carved-like feet swayed idly in the air... Black Cat wore open-toed white heels.

"I came to discuss the lawyer situation with you." Batman's face beneath the mask showed no expression.

"I'm getting a headache over exactly that." Black Cat sighed at his words. "Initially things went smoothly, but once those lawyers heard my target was Kingpin, every single one fled."

"A bunch of cowards."

"We need a lawyer with sufficient courage and capability." Batman said.

"Obviously I know that." Black Cat rolled her eyes. "You're very concerned about this?"

"No. I also need a lawyer." Batman said. "I need to help a scientist sue Oscorp."

"Seems Oscorp must have deeply offended you." Black Cat smiled. "I'm curious who's under that suit. You're not really New York's newly popular 'vampire' legend, are you?"

She stood and approached the empty building's window, bending to watch hurried pedestrians below:

"Every day we delay finding a lawyer, Kingpin gets one day closer to successfully laundering that money. Once he completely whitewashes it and transforms into an entrepreneur, toppling him becomes much harder."

Her words fell. Behind her, no response came.

Black Cat turned toward where Batman had been standing, only to discover he'd left at some unknown time.

"...I shouldn't be ugly. Why does this guy always refuse to stay with me longer?" She felt thoroughly bored, opening the window and flipping out.

NYPD Manhattan Precinct. George Stacy was supervising officers loading Squid-Man into a transport vehicle.

The transport had been specially modified. The compartment's four walls carried high-voltage current. The vehicle body was reinforced to effectively prevent Squid-Man from escaping during transport.

Thanks to clues provided by that mysterious person and Auggie's recovered victim list, Squid-Man's case had progressed extremely rapidly.

After today's routine hearing, barring surprises, the death penalty inevitably awaited Squid-Man.

George Stacy slammed the compartment shut with a bang, waving at the escort convoy. The convoy immediately drove majestically toward the courthouse.

"Dad, is that squid so dangerous it requires armed escort?"

Beside George, a girl in a pale yellow top and plaid skirt asked curiously.

The girl possessed pale golden long hair. Her face was porcelain-white. Several strands blown by wind across her forehead made her delicate features even more striking, like someone stepping from a painting.

"Gwen, didn't I say not to come to the station while I'm working?" George frowned slightly.

"I'm just curious. Also asking if you're coming home for dinner tonight?" Gwen's mouth formed an unhappy pout.

"Of course. Because that mysterious guy keeps dumping criminals at the station entrance, I haven't left early for several days." George couldn't help smiling at his daughter's sour expression.

"Really?" The curve of Gwen's mouth immediately transformed into secret delight. "But what's the deal with this mysterious guy?"

Seeing his daughter's persistence, George could only briefly describe recent events.

"Seems that guy, like Spider-Man, is a helpful good citizen." Gwen said thoughtfully after hearing her father's account.

She'd spoken casually, but George's expression suddenly turned serious. Looking earnestly at Gwen:

"He and Spider-Man are both not helpful good citizens."

"Spider-Man thinks wearing a mask lets him arbitrarily enforce law. Often police receive a call and rush over, only to see shattered glass everywhere and criminals webbed up in the air... Sure, good deeds, but he operates alone. Headlines are all about him."

"During his active period, resignation rates at all New York precincts remained high, because officers felt useless—that New York only needed Spider-Man, that police were just cleanup workers."

"If this continues, New York will eventually become a crime haven. How many criminals can Spider-Man handle simultaneously?"

Gwen was intimidated by her father's serious expression. She shrank her neck, saying quietly:

"Then... what about that mysterious guy?"

"He's simply a terrorist using crime-fighting as an excuse to unleash violence." George said.

Assistant Auggie happened to pass Chief Stacy, quickly asking:

"Should we issue a warrant targeting that mysterious guy?"

George shook his head repeatedly:

"Don't know his name, don't know his appearance, don't even know if he's fucking human. According to yesterday's criminal's description, possibly even a vampire."

"Though you and I know that's unlikely, issuing a warrant would instead cause unnecessary public panic."

Watching the armed vehicles transporting Squid-Man disappear at the street's end, George finally entered the station.

At that moment atop a high-rise, Batman stood at the rooftop's edge watching the convoy below.

Only after Squid-Man was carried into the courthouse in his cage without incident did Batman quietly leave.

Returning to the abandoned shipyard, Batman didn't remove his suit. He directly opened his computer to search for "Silver Sable" information.

Black Cat's lawyer search remained stalled. This matter couldn't drag on.

As Black Cat said, once Kingpin's funds were completely laundered, opportunities to topple him would diminish...

And "Silver Sable," as security company personnel, inevitably had connections to underground forces. She might know lawyers daring enough to take on both Kingpin and Oscorp cases.

He didn't know Silver Sable's real name. This time he again used hand-drawing followed by computer recognition for searching.

"Silver Sable. Real name Silver Sablinova. Father was leader of government-established 'Wild Pack.' After father's death, the pack became private mercenaries. Silver Sable subsequently established 'Silver Sable Security Company,' serving as chairman and CEO..."
