Chapter 31: Black Cat and Bat
"Dr. Otto went on a killing spree in Brooklyn's sewers. Currently, the NYPD is fully pursuing this once-respected world-class nuclear physics expert."
"Though there's currently no direct proof Dr. Otto is the murderer in Oscorp's underground third floor case, he's already become a more terrifying threat than that killer."
"We were fortunate to interview several officers present when Dr. Otto escaped. Let's hear what they say."
The miniature wireless receiver integrated into the bat helmet was listening to the broadcast. Batman silently and swiftly leaped between towering buildings toward Oscorp Tower.
"Dr. Otto was like a movie monster, suddenly bursting from underground!"
"Those four tentacles effortlessly grabbed and threw multi-ton vehicles. I suspect he could destroy a building."
"Rather than calling him Dr. Otto, I'd say 'Dr. Squid' fits better. But we just arrested a Squid-Man recently..."
"Perhaps calling Otto 'Doctor Octopus' would be more appropriate."
Standing atop a high-rise opposite Oscorp, Batman used his newly-equipped night vision and thermal imaging to clearly see the distribution of police officers standing guard around the tower.
Main entrance, side entrance, underground garage, trash chute... virtually every entry point had officers stationed.
This was within Batman's expectations, but some things remained beyond his control.
Hiding around Oscorp Tower wasn't just Batman. Another person crouched quietly atop a nearby building, observing the situation.
The other party, like Batman, apparently wanted to infiltrate Oscorp.
"The bat helmet temporarily lacks zoom, photography, and facial recognition functions. I can't confirm their identity."
Batman remained motionless watching the figure. The other party began moving, shifting positions around buildings surrounding Oscorp, seemingly observing the tower from different angles and directions.
"Based on movement and physique analysis, the subject is female, possibly professionally trained. But she hasn't discovered me, even though she's now reached the rooftop of my building."
Batman didn't continue hiding. When he saw the woman use rope to reach his rooftop, he decisively chose to take initiative.
Hiss.
With an extremely subtle nitrogen spring sound, pitch-black webbing merged with night shot out, firmly sticking to the woman's waist. Batman swung his arm back sharply. Her body balance was immediately broken, stumbling backward toward him.
Uncertain who she was or whether she was an ordinary person, Batman didn't let her crash onto hard flooring. Instead, he extended his hand to catch her.
Thud!
The seemingly unbalanced flying figure stretched her body mid-air. Her toes lightly touched Batman's hand. Her body flipped and landed steadily.
The instant her heels steadied, Batman vanished from before her, somehow circling behind her, his arm firmly locked around her throat.
"I'm done for!"
Her heart panicked. She tried breaking free from restraints behind her, but the arm across her neck was hard as cast iron.
No time to think. One hand quickly raised toward the eyes of whoever was behind her, but was also firmly caught by a bat-gloved hand.
"Black Cat?"
Just as she momentarily felt at a loss, a familiar voice sounded behind her.
Then the arm choking her throat and the hand gripping hers both released. Black Cat Felicia turned around, seeing her exceptionally mysterious "partner."
Familiar black, familiar pointed ears, familiar voice made Black Cat relax:
"Batman?"
"You nearly scared me to death just now!"
She patted her deep-V leather-clad chest, making those breasts tremble.
Batman scanned Black Cat up and down. She still wore that black deep-V leather outfit with white fur collar.
The trembling breasts didn't stir a ripple in Batman's voice:
"What are you doing here?"
"I want to go inside there." Black Cat pointed remotely at the police-blockaded Oscorp Tower. "I suspect last night's murder case might be related to Kingpin."
Related to Kingpin?
Batman's eyebrows beneath the mask furrowed slightly. He didn't know why Black Cat would make such a judgment:
"Basis for judgment?"
"According to intelligence I obtained, Kingpin very likely conducted a stock transaction during the day." Black Cat said.
Seeing Batman remain motionless, even his exposed mouth showing no emotional fluctuation, Black Cat felt greatly disappointed.
"Kingpin conducted a stock transaction. Aren't you disappointed?" Black Cat asked curiously. "We lost the opportunity to sue him using a lawyer."
Batman remained cold as stone, as if beneath the suit wasn't an emotionally rich human, but aside from the chin, a body entirely composed of machinery:
"I have Plan B."
"Oh~ That's unfortunate. Your Plan B is about to fail, because Kingpin not only didn't divest his shares and launder money, he instead threatened a shareholder named Valentine into a stock acquisition." Black Cat said.
"Acquisition? Not divestment?"
Now Batman's face showed a trace of confusion. But in just an instant, he returned to being a cold machine:
"I understand."
"Understand what?" Black Cat didn't understand.
Batman walked toward the building rooftop's edge, his voice low:
"As you said, Kingpin is 'investing.' He wants to seize this opportunity to become Oscorp's largest shareholder in one stroke, transforming his identity from underground emperor to legitimate businessman."
Black Cat stepped forward, standing beside Batman:
"We must grasp his criminal evidence as quickly as possible."
After speaking, she looked at Batman, then lightly jumped, clinging to Batman like an octopus. Her arms wrapped around his neck, her legs tightly clamped Batman's waist:
"You've definitely found a way to enter Oscorp, right?"
Batman said nothing, leaping from the building's top.
With help from the Bat-Claws and glider device, even carrying a person, Batman didn't waste much effort reaching Oscorp Tower's rooftop terrace.
Officers were also on duty here. Entering through the stairwell clearly wasn't realistic.
Black Cat lightly jumped down from Batman, pointing at the on-duty officers and whispering:
"Should I knock them out?"
Batman shook his head, bending to reach the combat boot's base and press a button.
"...So, then what?"
Black Cat watched Batman stand motionless in hiding, puzzled.
"Wait." Batman glanced at Black Cat squeezed beside him.
"Wait for what?"
This time Batman didn't answer again, silently counting.
One, two...
Half a minute later, a series of fluttering sounds suddenly rang out on Oscorp's terrace. A large swarm of bats gathered, flying wildly across the terrace.
'Is this guy... even human?' Black Cat looked at the bats flying overhead and the officers whose attention they'd attracted.
Her gaze moved away for only two seconds. Batman before her had already vanished. Black Cat only caught sight of his pointed ears disappearing into a ventilation duct.
No time to think. Black Cat quickly leaped lightly after him, following Batman through the ventilation duct into Oscorp Tower.
