Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

Day 3.75

Colin pulled out onto the road, trying to keep the noisy diesel van quiet, and failing.

Fuck it. You knew some Dead might follow. Stick to the plan!

He drove towards his place, already seeing a couple of Dead stagger out of properties.

A couple don't matter, you don't have to go far.

Except a couple became a few.

Then alot.

When he got to his place, 30 or 40 Dead were a hundred metres behind.

He scraped the left side of the van up against the neighbours fence and drove the front into the thick Privett hedge that fronted his home.

Leaping out the drivers door, he crossed the street, turned and yelled at the following Dead.

" Hey look at me! Not the van! Nothing to see there! I'm chocolate flavoured! Follow me!"

He jogged the hundred metres to the crashed cars from this morning.

Only this morning? Fuck me has it been a long fucking day!

He watched the herd of Dead reach and pass the van, ignoring it and following the noisy prey ahead.

Colin nodded, satisfied with his work, and ducked behind the overturned car in the street.

Keeping the car between him and the Dead, using it to block there view, he ran ahead then cut left at the Greenbelt, and kept running along the back of the houses till he reached the ladder he left earlier.

Up and over he went, much more easily than he expected in fact, and pulled the ladder over behind him.

The van now sat blocking the driveway. Keep the noise down and he was safe.

Fuck Yeah!!

[ Quest Complete. Secure Your Shelter. Situational Awareness increased. Threshold Met. Contender Daily Quest Available A Sunrise Local ]

This really is some Anime shit going on here. Thought I was having a stroke from the stress of living a Zombie Apocalypse.

Rewards for doing the smart thing is a good deal. Of course doing the stupid thing gets me dead, so I'd say that's a fairly balanced system.

Day 4

Woke up early today. May be a good habit to only go out in daylight. The Dead don't see much from over a few hundred metres, and the night is just fucking creepy without the sounds of people and traffic.

The Expressway is quiet now. I used to hear car horns and heavy trucks.

Now, just nothing.

[ Contender Daily Quests Available.

Secure Water Stores - 0/200 litres

Physical Training [Heartrate] - 0/20mins

Weapons Training - 0/20mins

Daily Quests to boost my survival chances. If I hadn't found that food in the garage, I'd be worried about burning extra calories. Still shouldn't be too wastful though.

He turned on the tv to check the latest current events.

The News didn't show Exeter anymore. It showed other cities around England.

London was burning. We're screwed now.

That many Dead, at best half City population got away.

Assume the worst likely Colin

90% Dead. 9 million.

no stopping them.

How far is London? 300kms I think. 5 days minimum for those slow fucker to walk here, following the road.

And the road was pretty fucking straight.

10 days at most I reckon. That's my clock now. Survivor, not victim.

It was a Flu Vacine that did it they were saying on the tv. Exeter City just happened to get the first bad doses. The others must have already been delivered to the other cities and in circulation before the realised.

Internet is out still, probably the tv will go out soon too, even money if the tv goes before the power.

He needed a battery radio.

First. Daily Quests. Get water.

He had filled the bathroom and kitchen sinks with water this morning, hammering the drain plug down with a piece of cloth under it so it didn't leak out. Every container he had was filled with water.

[ Secure Water Stores - 50/200 litres

Maybe if I hadn't spent so many years alone as a gaming shut-in like those Japanese dudes, I wouldn't be dealing with this shit so well right now.

Probably loose my shit later on. Get eaten while running naked n crazy round the streets.

Right now, he needed more water though, while he stared out the window at the Bensons home. And cooking supplies actually

He needed gas for cooking with.

The Shell Station on the Expressway was not an option. Not yet anyway.

If it wasn't over run with people, it would soon be over run with the Dead moving out of Exeter or even from Torquay in the south.

Alot of towns around that are gonna get empty before too long.

Well he had the van out front, if he needed to leave. He'd have to empty it out, but he already planned that for today anyway.

A vehicle full of food left to rot is not allowed in this new world.

And bakery goods are not known for their shelf-life.

Right now though, Breaking and Entering the Bensons home. Or Breaking and Squating more like.

Carrying the hammer wrapped in a towel, Colin walked to the back door. The door sat in an enclosed area. To the right was a laundry room.

He was hoping the area the door was set into would diffuse the noise of breaking glass. With a quick punch with the hammer, he broke the glass next to the door handle.

Colin stepped back outside to listen for a few minutes.

Nothing. No marching feet of a Dead herd. No growls from over the back fence.

Returning to the backdoor, he started pulling glass shards from the window frame, placing them on the second towel with him, spread on the ground.

With a space cleared in the window, he reached in and released the door lock and deadbolt and pushed the door open.

Home sweet home.

First things first. Water.

Day 4.25

Like in his flat, he started filling all the sinks in the house, only when he got to the bathroom did he relax, marveling at the bathtub his flat didn't have.

With that filling, he dragged out every container and bucket he could find. The Bensons had alot of containers, and who needed this many buckets!

Not that I'm complaining. Drink while the drinking good mate. The more you drink while the waters on, the better.

All that took most of an hour, He then took stock of the supplies in the pantry, and glory be Emma Benson was a preserver!

Jars filled multiple shelves. Fruit. Vegetables. Even meat was jarred and preservered.

[ Quest Complete. Secure Water Stores - 200/200 litres. Bonus Food Stores Found. Constitution increase ]

How can years of fucking around with shitty jobs, not saving, making bad choices all the way along end with me in a zombie apocalypse with a fuck-ton of supplies, living sweet in a secure house!

The Gods clearly had a sense of humour.

He wandered through the rest of the house.

To him, it looked alot like an elderly home owner lived here, except for the two children's room.

Everything had an Old feel to it, probably just because of the simplicity of the decor.

Even has a Potbelly Stove in the corner of the dining area, not that I've seen any wood for it.

He finished his tour at the bathroom, turning the tap off to the now filled bathtub.

Gotta get that stuff from the garage inside. I really don't want have to go out there everytime I want something.

What about the rest of the Village?

This thought had kept popping into his head since last night.

After he had secured the property, it lead to thinking he could do the same with the Village at large

He knew it could be done.

He knew why he shouldn't do it.

Because you need to be able to leave in a hurry Colin-me-boyo.
