Chapter 16 - whispers of blood

The city of Velyra didn't sleep that night.

Every corner buzzed with rumor — whispers of blood spilled in the Crystal Hall, of chains made from shadows, and of a man who walked through guards like wind through leaves.

Kael's name now echoed through the streets like a curse.

Some called him savior. Others called him monster.

He didn't care what they called him — only that they spoke his name with fear.

Inside the guildhall, the air was tense.

Selene spread a parchment map across the long table, its edges marked with ink and blood.

"These are the Council's strongholds," she said, pointing to the red circles. "But we found something else while scouting near the old aqueducts — symbols carved into the walls. The same serpent marks we've seen before."

Serana, the former priestess, looked up sharply.

"The cult's been hiding there," she said. "Those ruins used to be part of the lower temple district, sealed after the flood twenty years ago. If they've reopened it… something's coming."

Kael studied the map, his fingers tracing the route. "Then we go tonight."

Aurelia frowned. "It could be a trap. You've barely rested since the Council attack."

Kael gave a small smile. "If it's a trap, we'll spring it before they're ready."

Nyra grinned, showing a flash of teeth. "I like this plan already."

---

They moved at dusk.

The old aqueduct tunnels were cold and damp, filled with the distant drip of water. Moss coated the walls, and strange markings glowed faintly where torchlight touched them — curling shapes that looked like coiled snakes.

The deeper they went, the heavier the air became.

Kael could feel a pulse beneath his feet, like the faint heartbeat of something buried deep below.

"Do you feel that?" Aurelia whispered.

Kael nodded. "It's not the system. It's something older."

---

They reached a wide stone chamber at the end of the tunnel.

In its center stood a cracked altar, carved from obsidian. Around it, robed figures knelt, their voices rising in a low, rhythmic chant.

Serana froze. "That's… the initiation rite. They're trying to awaken a fragment."

Before Kael could ask what she meant, one of the figures turned. His face was covered by a mask shaped like a serpent's skull.

"Welcome, vessel," the man said, his voice echoing unnaturally. "The Serpent foresaw your coming."

Kael's chains snapped forward, striking through two cultists before they could move. The rest rose, their hands glowing with dark energy.

"Vessel?" Kael repeated coldly. "You've chosen the wrong man."

---

The battle erupted.

Chains lashed out, slicing through the dim light, but the cultists were faster than the assassins Kael had fought before. Their bodies twisted unnaturally, moving like snakes. Black smoke poured from their wounds instead of blood.

Nyra charged in, claws flashing. Selene's sword gleamed silver as she cut through spells mid-cast. Aurelia stayed near the altar, guarding Serana as she whispered frantic counter-prayers to disrupt the ritual.

Kael fought in silence, his mind focused.

Each movement of his chains was sharper, more controlled than ever. They formed shields, spikes, even hooks that dragged cultists into the air before crushing them.

But the ground beneath the altar began to crack.

"Kael!" Serana shouted. "They finished the rite!"

The obsidian split open, and a massive serpent's eye appeared beneath it — lidless, glowing gold, staring directly at him.

For a heartbeat, everything stopped.

Then a voice filled his mind.

"You carry my seed of desire."

Kael staggered back, clutching his head. His vision blurred with red and black.

"You grow strong by feeding on passion, on hunger… that is my gift."

He grit his teeth. "No. My power is mine alone."

The voice chuckled — a sound like hissing breath and thunder.

"Deny it all you wish. But you cannot escape what you are becoming."

Then the eye blinked — and vanished. The altar collapsed, leaving only dust and silence.

---

Kael dropped to one knee, breathing heavily. Sweat ran down his face, but his eyes still glowed faintly red.

"Kael!" Aurelia ran to his side. "Are you—"

"I'm fine," he said hoarsely, though he didn't believe it himself. The system's interface flickered wildly in his mind, showing corrupted symbols and unreadable text.

Selene helped him stand, her expression hard. "What happened?"

"The Serpent spoke to him," Serana said quietly. "It recognized him."

Nyra frowned. "Recognized him as what?"

Serana hesitated, then met Kael's eyes. "As its vessel. The system you carry—it's not from the gods of men. It's older. It was made to find a host who could channel the Serpent's hunger into strength."

Kael's jaw tightened. "Then I'll master it before it masters me."

---

They burned the altar before leaving, but even as the flames rose, Kael couldn't shake the feeling that the voice was still in his head. Whispering. Waiting.

Back in the guildhall, he locked himself in the training chamber.

He sat cross-legged on the cold floor, his chains resting beside him like sleeping beasts.

"Show me," he said quietly. "Show me what you are."

The system responded after a long pause.

Kael smiled faintly. "Then I'll turn their curse into my weapon."

---

Outside the door, his women waited in silence.

Aurelia leaned against the wall, her hands clasped tightly. "He's changing," she whispered.

Selene nodded. "He's walking a dangerous path. But if anyone can control it, it's him."

Serana said nothing. She stared at the closed door, her eyes filled with both fear and devotion. "The Serpent chose him," she murmured. "But I wonder… will he stay Kael, or become something else entirely?"

---

By midnight, Kael opened the door. His eyes glowed faintly, but his steps were steady.

"The cult knows I'm coming now," he said simply. "And the city's about to choose sides."

Nyra grinned. "Good. Let them pick wrong."

He looked at each of them — his warriors, his lovers, his family — and nodded once.

"Tomorrow," he said, "we start hunting the Serpent's roots. I'm done waiting."

---

That night, as the guildhall quieted, Kael stood on the balcony again, watching the torches of the city below.

The streets were restless. The people were afraid. And somewhere beneath it all, the Serpent's presence pulsed like a second heartbeat.

Kael closed his eyes and let the wind brush against his face.

"I don't care what you are," he said softly. "God, system, or curse. You gave me this power — and I'll decide what it becomes."

The chains around him moved like shadows in the moonlight, answering his will.

And far below the city, deep in the ruins they had left behind, the serpent's eye opened once more — faintly glowing in the dark.
