Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 – The Blossoms of Power

The dust of the trial had not yet settled when the heavens began to shift.

At the far end of the Trial Grounds, where the cliffs curved like a crescent blade, an unnatural light shimmered through the air — faint, silver, and pulsing like a heartbeat.

Zeref felt it first.

The sensation was sharp and cold, cutting through the lingering energy of battle. His gaze turned toward the mountainside where a fissure had opened in the earth. The crowd of disciples, still catching their breath, froze as something began to emerge from within the rift — slow, monumental, ancient.

A monolithic statue rose from the ground.

It was colossal, its surface carved from an unknown stone that glimmered faintly with runes long forgotten. The shape was humanoid, yet its features were blurred — half divine, half celestial, as if it stood between two worlds.

A silence fell across the field.

Even Instructor Liang Yuren usually impassive expression tightened. "That… cannot be."

Chen Ruo whispered, "It wasn't there before the trial began…"

The statue's chest bore an engraving — a circular emblem, faintly glowing, depicting the three celestial rings of Aetherion.

And then, the air pulsed.

A wave of energy rippled outward, shattering fragments of earth and light. Every disciple staggered back as the monolith blazed with sudden brilliance — and in the blink of an eye, it vanished.

Only silence remained.

No trace of stone, no fissure, no glow. As if it had never existed at all.

Zeref's expression remained unreadable, but deep within, a cold realization settled.

That energy… he knew it. It resonated with something buried in his own soul — something he had long kept hidden.

The instructors hurried to contain the panic.

"The trial is concluded!" Yuren's voice thundered, echoing across the valley. "Return to the assembly grounds immediately!"

As the disciples obeyed, whispers erupted like wildfire.

"What was that?"

"Was it an illusion?"

"No — I felt its energy… it was real."

"Could it be a relic of the Old Era?"

Zeref said nothing, but as he glanced toward the fading light in the distance, a single thought burned quietly in his mind.

The world hasn't forgotten Aetherion… it's awakening.

The Reward Ceremony

The central courtyard of the Heavenly Blade Academy shimmered with banners of silver and azure. The morning sun glinted off polished marble tiles as the surviving disciples stood in disciplined rows, awaiting their ranks and rewards.

Instructor Liang Yuren stood at the podium, his hands clasped behind his back. "Yesterday's trial has revealed much — courage, strength, and… folly. But all are lessons worth remembering."

He nodded toward the aides carrying jade plaques. "For outstanding performance, the following students shall receive the Heavenly Blossom Tokens and one week's access to the Inner Library."

Names echoed through the air one after another — familiar faces filled with pride.

Finally:

"Zeref Ying."

A murmur swept through the courtyard.

"He's ranked first again?"

"Didn't he just arrive?"

"I heard he channeled a technique none of the instructors recognized…"

Zeref walked forward in silence. The jade plaque glowed faintly in his palm — cool, pulsing with energy.

Liang Yuren met his gaze. "You possess clarity," he said quietly. "But clarity can blind those who refuse to see the world's blur. Remember that."

Zeref bowed slightly, the faintest nod of respect. "I will."

Behind him, Huang Darius clenched his fists until his knuckles whitened. The humiliation of defeat still burned in his veins. He had trained for years, carried his family's expectations, and yet this unknown commoner had shattered his pride in front of the entire academy.

As the ceremony concluded, Darius's face twisted into a cold sneer. He leaned toward one of the nearby students. "Fetch my cousin," he hissed. "If the academy won't restore my honor… he will."

The Challenge

By afternoon, word spread across the academy like wildfire — a new duel had been declared.

Students swarmed the Crimson Ring Arena, eager for blood and spectacle. The platform shimmered with sealing runes, ready to contain the force of higher-tier cultivators.

Zeref stood at its center, calm as always, the faint breeze tugging at his dark robes.

From the far gate entered a tall, broad-shouldered figure in crimson armor — Huang Shen, Darius's cousin and an upper-level disciple from the Second Division, known for his fierce temper and mastery of flame techniques.

"So you're the arrogant new recruit," Shen said, his voice low but filled with contempt. "You humiliated my kin. You'll pay that price today."

Zeref's expression didn't waver. "Your cousin lost fairly. Strength decides outcome, not pride."

Huang Shen's lips curled into a grin. "Then let strength decide again."

The gong struck — the duel began.

Shen moved first — faster than expected. His blade ignited with a surge of red spirit fire, scorching the air as he lunged forward. Zeref blocked with a swift parry, his blade gleaming with cool, dark energy.

The clash sent ripples through the arena. The crowd roared.

Zeref's movements were efficient, calculated — every swing a dance of precision. Yet Shen's strength was overwhelming. His cultivation base burned hotter, deeper, every strike heavy with the weight of experience.

Within moments, the balance began to tilt.

Zeref sidestepped a fiery slash, his cloak singed at the edges. Shen's laughter echoed. "You fight like a ghost — but ghosts can't bleed!"

A spiral of flame erupted around him — the Crimson Lotus Formation. The arena filled with burning petals, their heat distorting the air.

Zeref's eyes narrowed. He could sense the weakness — a narrow gap in the outer ring. But as he prepared to strike, the earlier fatigue from the trial began to surface. His spiritual flow faltered — his body not yet fully recovered.

Shen's blade struck like thunder.

Zeref barely deflected, the impact sending shockwaves up his arm. He skidded backward, his boots grinding against the scorched tiles. The energy around him wavered.

The audience leaned forward, excitement growing.

"This time he's losing…"

"Even his balance is breaking!"

"That's what happens when arrogance meets power."

Zeref steadied his breath, his gaze cold. He could win — if he released even a fraction of his sealed power. But doing so here, before hundreds of eyes, would reveal too much.

He made his choice.

As Shen charged, Zeref lowered his stance, channeling what remained of his energy into defense. The collision sent a burst of light across the arena — and when it cleared, Zeref was on one knee, his blade half-buried in the stone.

The crowd erupted.

Huang Shen laughed triumphantly, resting his flaming sword on his shoulder. "Remember this, boy — not every battle can be won by talent alone. Some of us were forged by fire long before you crawled here."

Darius smirked from the stands, satisfaction flickering in his eyes.

Zeref rose slowly, dust drifting from his cloak. His lips curved faintly. "Forged by fire?" His voice was quiet, calm. "Then pray it doesn't burn you first."

He turned away as the arena guards declared the match concluded. The crowd's cheers mixed with mockery, echoing across the stone.

Chen Ruo and Lin Yuexi rushed to his side as he exited the platform.

"You're insane for taking that fight!" Liu hissed. "He's two levels above you!"

Zeref wiped the blood from his lip, unfazed. "Strength measured by cultivation alone is an illusion."

"Still," Feng Lan said softly, "even illusions can wound."

Zeref's gaze drifted skyward, to the lingering shimmer where the monolith had once appeared. A faint light flickered behind his eyes. "Some wounds are necessary to draw out truth."

Evening draped the academy in soft amber light. The students gathered once more in the grand courtyard, summoned by a tone that carried authority and mystery.

Instructor Xuan Li stood once again before them, but this time, his voice held an unusual note of restraint.

"Disciples," he began, "today's events remind us that pride and growth are twin edges of the same blade. But beyond rivalry lies mastery — and for that, we welcome new guidance."

The murmurs stilled as he gestured toward the marble steps descending from the academy's central tower.

A soft breeze swept through the courtyard, carrying the faint fragrance of lotus blossoms.

A figure appeared.

She walked with calm grace — white robes flowing like moonlight, her presence serene yet impossible to ignore. Her long dark hair shimmered faintly under the fading sun, and her eyes — deep, tranquil, and ancient — surveyed the students with quiet precision.

"Disciples of the Heavenly Blade," Xuan Li said, "meet Instructor Lin Zhiyao, newly appointed to oversee your cultivation and advanced spiritual studies."

Every student straightened instantly.

Her gaze moved across the gathered crowd, sharp yet unhurried. And then, just for a heartbeat, it stopped — on Zeref Ying.

The world seemed to narrow in that instant.

Neither spoke. Neither moved. Yet in that fleeting exchange of glances, an unspoken recognition passed between them — the same presence he had felt under the moonlit waterfall, the same calm that hid storms beneath the surface.

She inclined her head slightly, her tone soft but carrying the weight of command.

"I have watched your trials," she said. "Strength means nothing without purpose. From this day onward, I will teach you to seek what lies beyond the blade — the truth of the spirit."

Her gaze swept once more across the assembly, then turned toward the instructors. "Commence preparations for the Celestial Resonance Training. The academy has slept long enough."

The crowd erupted in whispers — Celestial Resonance, the most advanced cultivation ritual reserved only for elite disciples.

Zeref's expression remained unreadable. But deep within, he knew — their fates were now entangled in ways neither could avoid.

And as the sun dipped below the horizon, the first stars of evening began to gleam — faint echoes of Aetherion, shining upon a world once again awakening to its forgotten power.
