Chapter 21 - The SABOTEUR and the Citadel Trap

The massive, silent stone walls of the Ancient Citadel offered a deceptive promise of safety. Leo and Lara stood in the narrow archway, the heavy wooden bar bolted across the entrance, temporarily sealing out the world—the raging Oni, the defeated Trinity, and the relentless storm.

Lara was catching her breath, her eyes still wide with adrenaline, but she was smiling—a genuine, tired smile that warmed Leo's chest more than any fire..

"That was… ridiculous," Lara managed, shaking her head. "We took down a military operation with two pistols and a can of soup-grenades. And then we ran from an angry rock monster. My doctorate application is going to be interesting."

Leo grinned back, resting his Pry Axe against the stone. "I think the admission committee will accept 'Successfully utilized medieval bronze bell as a counter-ambush measure against modern mercenaries.' It's a very sound tactical decision."

Lara nudged him playfully with her elbow, a light contact that felt incredibly significant. "Just admit it, Leo. Your knowledge of this island is ridiculous. Are you secretly a descendant of the Sun Queen's tactician?"

"Maybe I just read the footnotes," Leo replied, the joke light and easy, a much-needed break from the terror. "Either way, the footnotes say we need to get to the main tower, and that means going through that wall."

He then focused on the System interface, ready to make his most significant progression choice yet. He was Level 12, all his Tier 2 stats were maxed, and he was standing in a Tier 3 area.

[Host Level Up! Level 12 Reached!]

[New Attribute Points Available: 3]

[Tier 3 Skill Tree: SABOTEUR Unlocked!]

[Skill Points Available: 1]

Leo had to upgrade his foundation for the complex, final challenges. He allocated his Attribute Points first, focusing on pushing the limits of his most crucial ability in this environment: perception and puzzle-solving.

[Attribute Allocation Log]

+3 Points to Mind. Rationale: Maximizing Mind to boost the efficacy of the new SABOTEUR skills and allow deeper analysis of the final, massive Citadel puzzles and traps.

New Mind: 16

[Attribute Allocation Complete! New Base Stats: Strength 14, Dexterity 17, Stamina 12, Mind 16]

The mental clarity was immediate and profound. Leo looked at the Citadel walls, and instead of just seeing old rock, he saw pressure plates, tripwires, and the complex hydraulic mechanics of the ancient traps.

He then invested his single, precious Skill Point into the new SABOTEUR tree.

[Skill Point Allocated to SABOTEUR Tree!]

Scavenger Sense: (Instinctively highlights rare, high-quality crafting components and hidden resources in a wide radius.) Rationale: Tier 3 enemies drop advanced gear, but Leo needs the materials to craft his own ultimate weapons and traps. This skill ensures maximum resource efficiency.

The moment the skill activated, his vision gained a slight, shimmering overlay. He could see faint, highlighted trails leading to small piles of specialized scrap metal, thick, insulated wires, and a small, sealed box of high-octane fuel hidden beneath a collapsed archway.

"Lara, hold on. We are not leaving without this."

He walked directly to the hidden archway, startling Lara. He kicked aside a pile of rubble and exposed the sealed box.

"How do you do that?" Lara asked, exasperated but deeply impressed. "You just... walk up to the exactly right spot every time. You're like a human metal detector."

Leo opened the box, finding the sealed can of fuel. Perfect for Molotov Cocktails, his mind supplied. "Survival is 80% preparation, 20% uncanny luck, I guess."

"More like 100% uncanny," she laughed, shaking her head. "Alright, Mr. Uncanny Luck. Where's the giant death-trap puzzle that opens the next door?"

Leo turned to the main Citadel courtyard. The path was blocked by a sealed stone portcullis, clearly operated by a counterbalance mechanism high above.

"There," Leo pointed, his Mind (16) instantly solving the physics problem. "See the massive copper weights hanging from the roof? We need to redirect the airflow from those huge vents near the ceiling to push those weights out. They'll hit the locking mechanism."

The puzzle was classic Tomb Raider—a complex environmental physics challenge.

They started the grueling climb. They scaled mossy walls, traversed narrow ledges, and avoided several hidden, pressure-activated dart traps that Leo spotted an instant before stepping on them.

"Okay, vent controls," Lara said, reaching a rusted lever near a massive fan mechanism. "If I pull this, the air hits the weights, the weights hit the lock. Simple."

"Simple, but timed," Leo added, watching the mechanism. "The lever will only stay down for five seconds. We have to redirect the air, and then quickly rappel across that gap before the pressure dies and the weight snaps back."

Lara looked at the terrifying drop and the massive, greasy copper weights. "You go first. You're the one who knows exactly how fast that weight is going to swing. I'll pull the lever on your mark."

"Alright," Leo said, securing his rope. He was about to make a blind leap that only his maxed Dexterity (17) could guarantee.

He took his position on the ledge, ready to leap across a 15-foot gap.

Then, he paused, a slight look of panic crossing his face—a genuine, gamer-related hiccup.

"Wait, wait, wait," Leo muttered, looking back at Lara. "Did we remember to collect the specific red berry from the bush near the entrance? The one that's needed for the optional challenge in this area? It's not critical, but it's 300 EXP."

Lara stared at him, bewildered. "Leo, we just sealed an undead monster behind a door, and a private army is coming back. We are about to jump a chasm to solve a medieval fan puzzle. And you're worried about a berry?"

Leo quickly shook his head. "Never mind. It's fine. The EXP is not worth the death risk. I can farm later. Just pull the lever on my count. Three, two, MARK!"

Lara slammed the lever down. The ancient fan roared to life, pushing a massive volume of air against the weights.

Leo leapt into the gap, his body a blur of precision and speed. He landed perfectly on the far side, scrambling to secure his footing just as the air pressure dropped.

Lara was right behind him, relying on the brief, perfect moment of the counterbalance. She swung across the returning weight, her grace undeniable, landing beside him just as the portcullis below rattled open with a resounding, metallic screech.

They had breached the Citadel.

They climbed down into the main plaza—a vast, frozen space that would serve as the primary stage for the game's final confrontations. The Citadel was quiet, but the air was charged with anticipation.

Leo looked at Lara, his expression a mix of triumph and fatigue. "We made it. Trinity will be here within the hour. The final push is now."

Lara nodded, her hand gripping her pistol. She then turned back to Leo, her expression soft but resolute.

"Before we go to the big boss fight, Leo," she said, her voice dropping. "If you know the path this well, you also know what's coming. Are you ready for that?"

She wasn't asking if he was ready to fight. She was asking if he was ready for the end of the line for this game, and the terrifying knowledge of the future that lay beyond.

Leo looked at her, then out at the frozen Citadel. "I'm Level 12. I have maxed stats, dual pistols, and a rocket scientist for a partner. Yes, Lara. I'm ready for the next game, too."

He put his hand over hers, a silent pact that extended far beyond the walls of Yamatai.
