Chapter 19 - Episode 19 — Between Fire and Shadow

....

The Demon Realm was restless. The eastern skies still bore scars from Sima Jiao's battle. Rumors spread fast — that the Demon Lord had been wounded, that his power was weakening.

Liao Tingyan sensed the tension everywhere she went. Soldiers avoided her eyes, servants whispered when she passed. But what weighed on her most was that she hadn't seen Sima Jiao in three days.

When she finally dared to enter the inner hall, she found it dimly lit. Sima Jiao sat on the throne, cloaked in black mist. His right hand trembled slightly, a sign of the hidden injury he refused to show anyone.

"You shouldn't be here," he said, voice calm but cold.

Tingyan stepped closer. "You're hurt. You should rest."

He looked at her — truly looked at her — and for a fleeting moment, the ice in his eyes cracked. "Demons don't rest."

Still, she noticed how pale his lips were. "If you keep using your power, you'll—"

"Enough." He rose, the darkness around him tightening. "I don't need pity."

She bowed deeply, forcing herself not to answer. As she turned to leave, he spoke again, quieter this time. "The next time I tell you to stay away… listen."

Outside, she paused, her heart heavy. "If he keeps burning himself like this," she thought, "he'll disappear before anyone can save him."

That night, Tingyan visited the Demon Healer, an old spirit who lived among poisonous flowers. "His energy is unstable," the healer said after sensing her aura. "Your bond with him may be the only thing holding it together."

"My bond?" she repeated.

"The mark he left on you connects your lives. If he breaks completely, you'll suffer the same fate."

Shock coursed through her. "Then how do I stop it?"

The spirit shook its head. "Stay close. Balance his chaos with your calm. But beware — too close, and you may fall into the darkness with him."

Tingyan left under the red moon, the wind carrying whispers of power and fate.

Back in the palace, Sima Jiao sat alone, tracing the black veins spreading faintly along his arm. He closed his eyes, feeling her heartbeat echo faintly through the bond.

"She shouldn't have come near me," he murmured. "I don't want her to drown with me."

Yet even as he said it, the flame in his chest flared — because part of him wanted her there.
