Chapter 34 - KRYPT-Ch.34: Mission Monsters

Matthew Atkinson & Natalie Russell

First Layer of the Supernatural Realm

"What the fuck is that?"

"Shit! There's a monster! There's a monster here!"

"Tom, save me, take me out..."

Suddenly, all kinds of screams and the roars of creatures came from the thick fog outside the city.

Natalie and Matthew both have high mental attributes, and so their hearing was excellent. In addition, they were now relatively close to the city gate so that they could hear clearly.

Matthew then remembered that two teams had chosen to stay outside and did not enter the city.

Apparently, the thick fog was filled with creatures, and the two teams had suffered a devastating disaster.

In other words, Natalie's previous analysis was correct. Staying outside the city in the thick fog would be dangerous!

Matthew frowned.

The creatures in the thick fog seemed endless, and the roars alone were enough to create an oppressive feeling.

It showed that those creatures were very powerful!

Even with his current strength, he might not be able to come out safely if he went into the thick fog.

"There are terrible creatures in the thick fog!"

Natalie said in a low voice, her pretty face was solemn.

"Could it be that something strange is happening in this thick fog?" Matthew frowned and couldn't help but complain, "Didn't they say that the early stages of the supernatural realm are relatively simple? Why doesn't it look like that to me?"

If the creatures in the thick fog were the mission target, the monsters, then every single one of these new supernaturals would die if they went in!

Hearing Matthew's complaints, Natalie frowned slightly and fell into deep thought.

"No... The difficulty of the first level of the supernatural realm shouldn't be that high."

As the girl spoke, she walked to the window and looked outside the city through the gap.

She observed for a moment, then said, "Matthew, look, it seems like the dense fog can't get into the city, including the creatures in the fog."

At this point, Matthew had already realized something. "So, Natalie, you mean..."

"The monsters mentioned in the missions should not be the creatures in the thick fog!!" Natalie said.

Although Natalie used the word 'should', her tone was unusually affirmative.

At that moment, the tavern owner's body, lying on the ground, suddenly twitched a few times, instantly attracting the attention of both.

Then, a strange event occurred before the eyes of two people. The tavern owner, who had clearly died before, shakily stood up again.

-Crack, crack!

Including the bones that were broken by Matthew's kick, all the bones in her body were reorganized with a series of cracking sounds.

When the tavern owner stood up completely, she looked scary!

Countless black lines spread across her face and neck, like dense spider webs. Her scarlet eyes emitted a captivating light that made her look hideous and terrifying.

Matthew frowned when he saw this.

A timid person would probably be so scared that their legs would go weak.

Fortunately, Matthew was very confident in his own strength. Coupled with his strong mental attributes, his willpower was also strong, so he was not scared.

-Roar!

A beast-like roar emanated from the tavern owner's throat. Then, she pounced on both.

At this moment, the tavern owner could no longer be called a human being; she was a complete monster!

Furthermore, this monster exuded a pungent, fishy odor.

-Puff

A fierce flame suddenly appeared and struck the monster's hideous, terrifying face.

It was Natalie who took action.

The monster was knocked back, its head severely damaged. It let out a miserable howl and finally stopped moving.

Got killed in seconds!

Natalie, who did all this, was very calm, and there was no sign of discomfort on her pretty face.

This was not only because she had high mental attributes and a strong will, but also because the girl's psychological qualities were strong enough to remain calm in times of crisis.

"Its weak point seems to be the head..."

As soon as Natalie said this, a look of surprise suddenly appeared on her pretty face.

"Matthew, I just received a notification about the change in the mission progress. In the 'Kill Monsters' line, the number is displayed as 1."

"Oh."

Matthew was amazed. "So, the real monsters are the humans in the town?"

His gaze turned towards the wretched man from before.

The wretched man was kicked by him in anger and turned into a puddle of mud. He was dead and didn't seem to be getting up.

"I killed that person before, but I didn't get any progress notification. Do we have to wait until they transform?"

Matthew frowned and guessed.

Natalie suddenly said, "They can't be called humans, they are just creatures in human skin! This city is full of these creatures, and they are also our mission targets: monsters!"

The girl seemed to understand everything and continued to analyze: "They disguise themselves as humans during the day, and their various behaviors are exactly the same as humans. Even their bodies have the same body structure as humans."

"Perhaps, even they themselves think they are human."

"Killing them while they are in human form is not recognized by the supernatural realm."

"Only when they reveal their true form will they be considered truly monsters!"

"And the scarlet moonlight outside must be the key to turning them into monsters..."

After a pause, Natalie speculated, "When they came in earlier, they mentioned the word 'offerings'. The true meaning of that word should be the offerings of religion or faith!"

"To these monsters, we, the supernatural beings, are probably sacrifices used to please some kind of existence!"

"Every year, new supernatural people enter this layer of the supernatural realm. I believe that those unlucky people who are used as sacrifices are the very foundation for the survival of these monsters!"

"Perhaps, they can exchange sacrifices with some kind of existence for sufficient supplies."

"This also explains why this isolated city, without agriculture or animal husbandry, has been able to prosper..."

Matthew nodded when he heard this. He totally agreed with Natalie's analysis.

This was also the only relatively reasonable explanation.

Natalie continued, "Actually, this supernatural realm mission isn't that difficult. The powerful monsters in the thick fog outside can't enter the city, and the monsters in the city, while scary looking, aren't very powerful. Even ordinary supernaturals can kill them as long as they're brave enough."

"What we really need to be wary of are some traps!"

"For example, the tempered food on the ground would be dangerous if we didn't realize it..."

Matthew nodded again. According to Natalie's analysis, this mission was indeed not very difficult.

Suddenly, he seemed to think of something.

"Natalie, according to what you said, the Earl's Mansion was probably a huge trap!"

"Yes!" Natalie said.

"Even if the sheriff hadn't tricked people, if the supernatural people who entered the city wanted to find free accommodation, the only answer they would get from asking other residents would probably be the Earl's Mansion. Unless they used other means to obtain another place to stay."

Just like them, they paid to stay in the tavern. Even so, traps were waiting for them!

"It seems that the Earl's Mansion is the place where these monsters are most prepared..." Matthew concluded: "Those fools who enter the Earl's Mansion are in big trouble!"

As soon as the words fell.

There was a sudden noise on the street outside.
