Chapter 20 - The Abyssal Eclipse

The sky bled red as the sun sank behind the jagged peaks of Mount Kyren. The light dimmed, but not in the way of a normal sunset—this was the Abyssal Eclipse. The ancient omen that the Demon Lords had long awaited. The world trembled as darkness rippled across the heavens, swallowing the last traces of daylight.

Kaien stood on the edge of a shattered cliff, his sword drawn and glowing faintly with violet runes. His breath came in controlled, heavy bursts, each exhale visible in the cold wind. Behind him stood his comrades—Rin, Liora, Hiro, and Aenon—the last surviving slayers of the northern division. Their bodies were scarred, armor cracked, but their eyes burned with resolve.

"This is it," Kaien murmured. "The barrier between realms is thinning. The Demon King's army is gathering."

Rin's bow glimmered as she nocked an arrow tipped with divine silver. "We've fought through mountains, through fire, and through betrayal. We can't back down now."

Liora clenched her blade of frostlight, the weapon humming like an awakened spirit. "And if this is the end, we'll make sure it's written in legend."

Thunder cracked. The ground split beneath them, revealing rivers of molten shadow. From the fissures, twisted forms emerged—demons with wings of smoke, claws of bone, and eyes burning with hatred. Their shrieks echoed like a thousand screams.

Kaien didn't hesitate. He leaped forward, his blade igniting in a burst of dark-purple flame. The first demon lunged at him—a towering beast with three heads and spiked limbs—but Kaien met it midair, slicing clean through it. The flame from his sword didn't burn flesh—it devoured souls.

"Formation Delta!" Kaien commanded.

The slayers moved in perfect sync. Rin fired a volley of arrows that burst into radiant explosions, tearing through the lesser demons. Hiro spun his dual blades in wide arcs, creating a circle of light that kept enemies from closing in. Aenon muttered ancient runes, summoning sigils of golden light that sealed the cracks in the earth—temporarily halting the spread of the abyss.

But it wasn't enough. The shadows grew denser. The Eclipse deepened.

A voice thundered across the battlefield—a voice older than time itself.

"So… you've come to challenge me, Kaien Draven. The boy who dares to defy destiny."

The voice belonged to Drazul, the Demon King.

The clouds tore apart as a figure emerged from the darkness. Massive wings unfolded, each feather dripping with cursed energy. His eyes glowed crimson, and his armor pulsed with veins of shadowfire. Around him floated the shattered souls of fallen slayers, their cries echoing in agony.

Rin's knees trembled. "That's him… the King."

Kaien's grip tightened. His violet eyes flared with light. "Then we end this here."

Drazul raised a clawed hand, and an orb of black flame formed above his palm. He hurled it downward—an explosion followed that flattened the nearby mountains. Kaien reacted instantly, slashing his sword upward. A massive wave of violet fire collided with the attack, creating a storm of pure energy.

The two forces met. The impact shook the land itself.

Liora was thrown back, barely catching herself. "Kaien! He's draining your energy!"

"I know," Kaien said through gritted teeth. "But I won't let him destroy everything we've fought for."

He dug his sword into the ground and began chanting the Rite of Eclipse, a forbidden technique that merged his spirit with the blade. His aura expanded, the ground beneath him cracking. His body began to glow, and markings of ancient runes spiraled across his arms and face.

Drazul laughed, a sound that split the sky. "You would sacrifice your soul for a doomed world?"

Kaien raised his head, his eyes blazing like twin stars. "For my friends. For the world that believed in me."

The light burst forth.

Rin unleashed her celestial arrows, Hiro charged in with a battle cry, and Liora summoned a storm of frost. Together they attacked in perfect harmony, their strikes converging toward Drazul's heart. But the Demon King was powerful beyond comprehension. His tail lashed out, shattering Hiro's blades. His roar sent waves of dark energy rippling across the field.

One by one, the slayers began to fall back.

Kaien stood alone once more.

The world dimmed again. Time slowed. His heartbeat was the only sound he could hear. He saw flashes of the past—his family, his training, his first battle, and the faces of everyone he'd sworn to protect.

He whispered softly, "For all of them…"

Then he vanished.

A single step—and he was behind Drazul. His blade glowed brighter than ever before, cutting through the very fabric of reality. The Demon King turned too late. Kaien's sword sliced through his chest, releasing a wave of searing light. The battlefield erupted.

The shockwave blew the clouds apart. The red moon above shattered.

When the dust settled, Kaien was on one knee, his sword buried in the ground. Drazul stood before him, his massive body cracking like glass.

"Impressive…" the Demon King muttered. "But you cannot kill darkness, Slayer. You only delay it."

Kaien looked up, eyes glowing faintly. "Then I'll delay it for eternity."

With that, he plunged his sword deeper into the earth. The runes across his body flared once more, sealing Drazul within a void of light. The demons shrieked as they disintegrated into ash.

Silence followed.

Rin and Liora rushed toward him, calling his name. Kaien turned, a faint smile on his face. "It's over… for now."

The eclipse faded. The sun broke through.

And though the battle was won, Kaien could still feel something stirring deep within the abyss—a promise, or perhaps, a warning. The world was safe for now… but the shadows were never truly gone.
