Chapter 1064 - The First Confrontation

The tense calm that hung over the eastern gallery of the Kingdom of the Gnomes was abruptly shattered by the sharp sound of split hooves clattering against the rock and by guttural growls that echoed ominously through the granite walls corrupted by the miasma. From the deep shadows of a side tunnel obstructed by rubble, a vanguard patrol composed of mid-ranking demons suddenly emerged, advancing with blind ferocity and crude blades in hand toward the exact location where our squad awaited them in ambush formation. The air around the monsters vibrated with dense entropic energy, slightly distorting the light of the lanterns and exuding a nauseating stench of burning sulfur. Maintaining the absolute composure that characterized the most experienced combat veterans, I assessed the terrain in fractions of a second, realizing that the restricted width of that underground passage prevented any flanking maneuver by the invaders, turning the rocky gorge into a perfect funnel for our immediate retaliation.

Reflecting on the relentless dynamics of confrontations against the forces of darkness in confined environments, I understood that the harmony and mutual trust among the members of a group were the fundamental pillars that ensured victory without unnecessary risks. In places where every square centimeter mattered for the execution of a precise strike, tactical coordination surpassed any numerical advantage held by the enemy. The squad did not hesitate for even a second in the face of the demons' frenzied advance; at my silent command, our collective response unfolded with surgical and devastating precision, illuminating the underground gloom with flashes of pure elemental energy and gleaming blades.

"The enemy vanguard is advancing without any coherent tactical formation, relying exclusively on brute force and intimidation through numbers, which offers us the perfect opportunity to execute a rapid neutralization counterattack," Vespera announced in a clear and firm voice, raising her hands as the magical necklace around her neck radiated a purifying starlight. The mage continued with her usual elegance: "I will fire focused beams of light to temporarily blind the patrol leaders and destabilize the cohesion of their advance!"

"The temporary blindness caused by Vespera's beams of light will be the green light for me to advance, clearing the central corridor with precise and efficient strikes," Scarlet interjected with a radiant, confident, and slightly playful smile on her lips, expertly spinning her longsword while her crimson eyes shone with contagious enthusiasm. The swordswoman continued with absolute ease: "I admit that these demons chose the worst day and the worst tunnel for underground sightseeing, because my blade is more than sharp enough to slice this rabble to pieces once and for all!"

"Scarlet's enthusiasm for battle is formidable, but to ensure that no poisonous miasma residue spreads when the bodies are destroyed, I will immediately activate alchemical neutralization barriers along the tunnel walls," Elara pondered, delicately adjusting the folds of her garment and maintaining a refined bearing in the middle of a combat zone. The alchemist continued with professional serenity: "The dispersal vials I positioned along the flanks will instantly absorb any toxic gas released by the monsters."

"I am immensely grateful for all the alchemical support and the tactical precision each of you brings, Elara and Scarlet," I replied in a firm, clear, and warm tone, stepping forward while drawing my weapon with a fluid and decisive movement. I looked at the united group and continued with determination: "Let's execute the breach formation and eliminate the threat without giving the intruders any chance to retreat!"

"My hunter's instincts and the strength of my fists are already synchronized to deliver a seismic impact along the flanks, blocking any attempt by these wretches to escape into the rear tunnels," Rai'kanna pointed out, her beastly ears remaining erect and focused while her tail swayed with controlled energy. The wolf warrior stretched slightly and added with an amused smile: "Not one of them will manage to get past this barrier!"

"And I will be applying gravitational containment runes to the floor just behind the front line, ensuring that the impact of Rai'kanna's and the hero's attacks reverberates with twice the force against the enemies," Lyannis added with a determined smile, adjusting the strap of her support bag. The scholar continued firmly: "The structural stability of the tunnel will remain intact under my runic control."

With the rear guard perfectly protected by the attentive assistance of Liriel and her dedicated assistant, who were cataloging the combat's energy data with impressive composure, I charged directly into the confrontation. The enemy commander, a robust demon with scaly skin and twisted horns, advanced while roaring furiously and brandishing a black iron mace charged with miasma. I dodged the frontal strike with a precisely calculated sidestep, taking advantage of the opening in the monster's guard to deliver a clean and decisive vertical slash that cut through both its armor and its body in half with astonishing ease.

At my side, Scarlet executed an impeccable spinning charge that simultaneously severed the arms of two smaller invaders, while Rai'kanna unleashed a seismic blow against the ground that threw the rest of the patrol off balance, allowing Vespera and Elara to finish off the remaining targets with bursts of purifying light and beams of stabilizing energy. The battle lasted only a few minutes, demonstrating our squad's absolute superiority, but also serving as a vivid reminder of the urgency of keeping the perimeter under strict surveillance until the eastern fissure was completely sealed. Thoughts about the importance of protecting every inch of that underground kingdom filled my mind, renewing my strength and confirming that our unity was truly insurmountable in the face of any adversity.
