☆Alice
"What the hell is this place? A maze? I don't even know where I am." I was so confused. I tried to find my phone but in vain. Those bastards had taken it. Well, even if they'd left it, it probably wouldn't work down here.
With the pistol in my hand, I took a few tentative steps forward. I tried to hold my breath, hoping to catch the smallest sound.
We weren't alone down here. I could hear heavy breathing. It had to be those hybrids. They were watching me… somewhere…
It was hard to tell the time in that place. I'd stayed in the green zone for at least an hour, I think — as long as I was there I felt safe. So why did my legs keep shaking?
"Come on, Alice. Sakamura-sensei would be disappointed in you," I told myself.
I raised the pistol and stepped out of the green zone.
Nothing.
I took a deep breath and kept walking; I still felt watched. "If you want to catch me, come and get me!" I shouted, punching the wall.
Immediately, half the wall collapsed. I screamed in surprise. My hand should've hurt like hell — but I felt nothing.
I heard animalistic cries and howls in the distance; they were moving away from me. Without realizing it, I had scared off all the mutants that were following me.
My confidence came back. Now I just had to find Shiori‑chi, Blitz, and Harugaki. Hate to admit it, but I'm not cruel enough to leave someone I know to die in this stupid game. Not even if it were that idiot Araki or one of his gang.
We'll definitely get out of here alive. Maybe even with the other participants.I smiled at myself to summon courage and hope — and then I heard a scream. A boy. I recognized the voice instantly. "Harugaki!"
I ran toward the direction of the cry, but several paths branched off in front of me.
"I don't have time to try them all!" I yelled.
I sprinted forward and punched the wall ahead of me, shattering it. Without stopping, I kept running — ran with every ounce of energy in my legs for a hundred meters, maybe two. After rounding the corner, I found Harugaki on the ground with his throat torn open! A semi‑human hybrid was drinking his blood.
I fell to the floor screaming.
I dropped the gun and started to cry.
The hybrid turned toward me and snarled. I grabbed the pistol with shaking hands and shut my eyes.
I fired!
The hybrid fell to the ground screaming. It had a chest wound but it wasn't dead. It screamed and writhed… but it wasn't dead!
It crawled toward me, screaming. Its mouth was deformed, teeth crooked, bloodshot eyes fixed on me — its prey. It grabbed my leg and opened its mouth, but immediately retracted. A knife was planted in its back. It rose and turned toward its attacker: Harugaki!
"You're alive? I just saw your throat ripped open — how are you—"
"There's no time. Get away!" he shouted.
I grabbed the pistol and backed off. As soon as I put some distance between me and the creature, I aimed again — but someone else opened fire before me, a bullet punching through the mutant's head.
"Blitz!"
"Jin, Alice‑san, are you okay?" "Yes, I'm fine… but that thing… why wouldn't it die? And Harugaki… how did you survive?"
"It's my ability: Decoy! I can create a copy of myself so I can stay hidden. The downside is it can't speak or attack. The scream was mine, not the decoy's."
"I see, so that's your power… Mine is—"
"Wait," Joshua said, pointing his rifle at me. "How can we trust you? How do I know you're not going to kill us? We're on different teams — you must be with Shiori‑san."
"Are you crazy?" I shouted. "Even if you're a complete idiot, I could never kill someone I know! I couldn't kill someone I don't know either! I have no intention of taking part in this absurd game!"
Joshua lowered his rifle. "Same here. I could never kill someone… Yet that hybrid used to be human."
I looked at the creature's corpse. It was horrifically deformed, but there were still recognizable human features.
"If you hadn't done it, Alice‑san might already be dead right now. You saved her life. You should be proud of what you did," Harugaki said.
"You're right, Jin. Alright, Alice‑san, I'll trust you!" "I think in a situation like this we can skip the honorifics," I said to ease the tension a little. "Just call me Alice."
"And you can call me Joshua." "I hope that goes for me too," Harugaki laughed. "Call me Jin!" "No, you're too weird. I'll keep calling you Harugaki!"
We all burst out laughing. At least in this horrible place there was still a little hope. I had already found two of my friends — now I just had to find Shiori‑chi and get out of here.

We stayed put near the closest green zone to rest, and took the chance to eat. Just as I was about to take a bite of my sandwich, Joshua stopped me. "Wait, we don't know how long we'll be here. One sandwich each might not be enough; maybe we should ration the food we have."
The bracelet lit up and activated automatically. "Don't worry, my dears," BeBe shouted. "Every 12 hours, we'll drop a backpack for each green zone. Of course, your BeBe advises you to eat and drink in moderation! It's bad to fight on an empty stomach, but it's also hard to fight when you're too full!"
The bracelet turned off.
Without waiting for Joshua's reply, I took a bite of my sandwich. I really wanted to get rid of the nasty taste from that drink in my mouth.
During the break, I explained my power to them—the Boxer—but Joshua didn't want to tell us his.

After resting for an hour, we set off to look for Shiori‑chi. Joshua advised me not to smash any walls so we wouldn't make noise and attract the hybrids, so we were forced to follow the labyrinth's winding paths with no idea where we were going.
I didn't know anything about the other contestants—I only knew they had lives too, and they certainly didn't want to lose them.
We followed a path that led across a steel bridge. Beneath it ran an underground river; I couldn't tell if it was natural or man‑made.
Past the bridge we arrived at a wide clearing from which dozens of paths branched out. It wasn't a green zone.
"Where do we go?" Harugaki asked.
Joshua seemed to think about it for a moment, but it was pointless; there was no way for us to know where Shiori‑chi might be.
"Let's go this way?" I suggested, pointing to the path straight ahead.
Joshua shook his head. "Be on guard—someone's coming!"
All three of us held our breath. I could hear them too: the footsteps of someone running!
"Could it be Shiori‑chi?" I asked immediately.
"We can't know," Harugaki answered. "But it doesn't sound like a hybrid running."
"Stay alert!" Joshua said, aiming his rifle with his right hand and raising his left.
The person who rounded the corner was the shrine maiden girl. She was running while looking over her shoulder—she hadn't seen us yet. She was definitely being chased.
"Hey! Stop! We won't hurt you! We want to help!" I shouted.
She turned toward us, terrified.
"No, please! Stay away from me. Please, don't kill me!"
She collapsed to the ground, sobbing.
I ran to her, but Joshua kept his rifle trained on her. "Careful, Alice—this could be a trap!"
I ignored him and threw myself down beside her. "Don't be afraid. I promise we'll help you get out of here. We don't intend to take part in this game. We want to save as many people as possible."
I held out my hand. "My name is Alice—Tengokushi Alice. These are Joshua and Jin."
She timidly took my hand; it was trembling. "My name is Hoshii Maya."
I hugged her and helped her to her feet. "It's okay. You can trust us. We want to get out of here, and you can be sure we will!" I tried to reassure her, but she kept trembling.
"Alice, look out!"
The moment Harugaki said those words, I lifted my head. Standing before me was one of the two guys who had stared so intensely at me during the gathering. He had a revolver in his hand.
"Come on, little miko, why don't you come with me? I'll protect you," he sneered.
"Stay back!" Joshua shouted, raising his rifle and aiming it at the guy.
He had dark eyes, dark hair, and a hint of stubble. A crazed grin twisted across his face.
"I've been stuck in this hellhole and separated from my partner. The least I deserve is a cute girl to keep me company, ahaha! Or maybe two!" His eyes locked on me.
"And who are you to make claims on Maya-chi?" I said, standing up.
"I'm Fukuyama Teppei, leader of the Ogawa gang. And who the hell are you to talk to me like that, you filthy whore?"
"My name is Tengokushi Alice, and mark my words — I'll make you eat every single one of those words, you fucking bastard!"
He lowered the revolver and fired. He had hit Maya-chi's right leg.
She screamed and burst into tears. Then she let out a cry — the loudest I had ever heard.
"Summon… With this ability, anyone can hear my scream within a kilometer's radius. Now those monsters will come here and devour us all! We're all going to die!"
"She's summoned the hybrids!" Harugaki said, glancing around.
I could already see them crawling out of the walls and the pipes above. Then they dropped down to the floor.
Maya‑chi struggled to her feet and began to hobble away. She slipped past Joshua and Harugaki and made for the bridge we'd come across.
"Wait — it's dangerous!" I shouted after her, but she didn't turn.
"This is your funeral, hahahaha!" Fukuyama laughed.
That bastard began to emit a red vapor, and the mutants inhaled it. Their eyes turned blood‑red and locked onto us.
"Target — that's my ability! Anyone who breathes this vapor will attack the target I choose. You could say I've already won! I can build a personal army from these creatures and wipe out all the other players. Since you stood in my way, you'll be first on the list!"
"Alice, chase that girl," Joshua ordered. "We'll handle him."
"What? Are you insane? What can you possibly do against all those mutants?"
"I said run!"
Maybe his ability really was that powerful. He was my teammate — I had to trust him.
I slipped past them and chased after Maya‑chi. Behind me, I heard the crack of a rifle…

I found Maya-chi a little further ahead, on the edge of the bridge. She was surrounded by two mutants with wasp-like heads.
I ran to her immediately, but one of the monsters tried to grab her. In trying to move away, she stumbled backward and fell off the bridge into the river.
Without hesitation, with a single punch, I shattered the fragile bodies of the mutants into pieces, then looked down. "Maya-chi, where are you?"
Her head emerged from the water, and she tried to swim toward a support point, but something was holding her back.
A mutant covered in scales rose from the water behind her and bit her neck. The girl screamed and struggled, but the brute strength of the monster was greater than that of the defenseless girl. The monster disappeared underwater, dragging the young miko with it.
I was paralyzed with fear. For a moment, Maya-chi surfaced and screamed.
I leaned as far over the bridge as I could and stretched out my arm, but it wasn't enough. "Maya-chi! Grab my hand!"
She reached out without stopping her screams, but the creature reappeared and dragged her down again. The struggle lasted only a few moments, then the water calmed and turned red.
I burst into tears; I had just witnessed the death of a girl devoured by a monster that shouldn't exist in this world!
I ran back to Harugaki and Joshua. I didn't want them to meet the same fate—I was afraid to be left alone.

Fortunately, they were both alive. Harugaki had created a clone of himself, and many hybrids were attacking the fake one, while Joshua was shooting at those who approached. His left hand was glowing with electric sparks. That had to be his power.
I ran past them and with a punch I threw the body of a mutant against the wall, then with my left hand I drew my pistol. I aimed at Fukuyama, but I couldn't get a clear shot. I shot into the crowd of dozens of mutants, and the bullet pierced that bastard's shoulder.
He fell to his knees screaming and stopped emitting that red vapor. Immediately, the hybrids turned towards him and started sniffing around. Maybe they were attracted by the blood like sharks.
Fukuyama screamed and started emitting the red vapor again, but the mutants had already jumped on him. I heard him scream the whole time as dozens of hybrids were tearing him apart and devouring him.
One of his arms flew to my feet, covered in blood, and a hybrid came to claim it. It growled at me, then took the arm and started biting, completely ignoring me. "Alice, let's take this chance to run, quickly!" Joshua shouted, grabbing my hand and dragging me away down one of the paths branching off from the clearing.

☆Shiori
I walked slowly down a dark corridor. I was scared — I was alone. I had no idea where Alice‑chan, Joshua‑kun, and Harugaki‑san were. The thought of having to pass through that unlit place made me tremble, but the hybrids' screams not far behind me left me little choice.
I looked back; nobody had followed me. I inhaled as deeply as I could and put one foot into the darkness.
My ability, Reflection, let me form an invisible shield to repel melee attacks and send bullets back. It had one weakness: I couldn't keep a shield active for more than a minute. I had to summon a new one before the old one shattered.
I moved forward step by step in the dark, making no sound at all. I even held my breath. My left hand pressed against the wall, my right stretched out ahead with an invisible shield ready to block any attack.
One step. I stopped to listen.
In the darkness ahead I heard a footstep. Another. Someone was approaching. Human, not mutant. I stood perfectly still, hoping they wouldn't notice me and would pass by.
But no — they slammed right into my invisible shield and fell backward to the floor. I saw a strange figure slither through the shadows, breathing heavily. I summoned a new shield to parry a possible strike. I took a step forward to try to put distance between us and found myself floating upside down in midair.
"What's happening?!"
Someone grabbed my hand and hauled me out of the tunnel into the light. She was a brown‑haired girl. She had a pistol trained on me, but her expression was more questioning than hostile. Maybe she didn't want to shoot.
I formed a shield with my hand, but she didn't seem to notice.
"Who are you?" she asked.
"My name is Shiori — Kage Shiori. And you?" I answered.
"I'm the one asking questions. Right now your life's in my hands. If I don't like your answers, I'll shoot." I nodded timidly, but I didn't mention my shield. I kept that as my last card. I remained silent, waiting for her next question.
"You were coming from that way… Are there hybrids over there?" she asked.
"I heard their growls — that's why I was trying to get away," I replied, meeting her eyes.
She snapped her fingers and I collapsed to the ground.
"More are coming from that direction. We're trapped," she said. "We'll have a better chance if we fight together."
"What makes you think you can trust me?" I asked.
"Simple — if we don't cooperate, we'll both die. Do you have a weapon?"
Her nonchalance in the face of danger surprised me. I pulled a stun gun from my backpack and showed it to her.
"It won't help much at a distance, and getting too close to those monsters is dangerous. What's your ability?"
She wasn't even looking at me — she was scanning the area for signs of the hybrids. I could have stunned her and run, leaving her to the monsters.
"I don't trust you enough to reveal all my secrets. If I have to use it, I will. And even if we both survive, you could always get rid of me later."
She smiled. "Alright — we'll team up for now. By the way, my name is Tsukima Mia. Nice to meet you, Shiori‑chan."
Probably Alice-chan would have gotten mad at someone who got so confident in such a short time, even if she does it all the time. Luckily, I wasn't like that.
From the dark corridor, the first hybrid appeared, looking like a lizard. More arrived behind me.
I raised my shield, ready to intercept the lizard hybrid's leap, while Tsukima-san aimed her pistol at the ones behind me.
A hybrid jumped on Tsukima-san, but she promptly pointed her hand at it and made it levitate in the air. She did the same with all the others.
I got distracted, and the lizard hybrid noticed. It leapt at me, but I immediately raised my hand, and the monster slammed against my invisible shield. For a moment, I thought it would be the end for me, but Tsukima-san grabbed the hybrid by the throat with her bare hands, shoved her pistol in its mouth, and fired.
"Get up, let's get out of here!" she said, holding out her hand. I grabbed it, and she helped me up. We ran into the dark tunnel while the mutants were suspended in the air.
She dragged me to a collapsed bridge; the gap to the other side was at least five meters.
"We're trapped!"
She didn't seem scared at all. "Calm down, I have an idea! Be ready!"
The mutants shifted in the air; she was probably controlling them. Even though they roared and screamed, they couldn't move.
She lined them up in the void, forming a sort of bridge, then jumped on their backs and crossed.
"Hurry, before more show up!"
I jumped onto the first mutant's back. I heard it roar, but it couldn't do anything. I looked down; the river seemed very deep and surely full of other hybrids. I started feeling dizzy, and my legs trembled.
"Don't look down!" Tsukima-san yelled from the other side of the bridge.
Unfortunately, I wasn't an athletic girl like Alice-chan, and it took me a few minutes to cross. After I reached Tsukima-san, she snapped her fingers, and all the mutants fell into the water. Fortunately, none of those monsters seemed capable of swimming. One by one, they disappeared beneath the waves.
"Looks like we're safe… for now," she laughed.
It wasn't so!
A large, bipedal mutant with gray skin was right behind her. I saw it just in time. I threw Tsukima-san to the ground and instinctively created a shield.
The hybrid unleashed an electric shock from its hands toward us. The shield would hold for a minute, but I couldn't summon another one until it finished attacking. The electricity bounced back and overwhelmed the monster.
"I owe you my life, Shiori-chan. Let me handle this now."
Tsukima-san aimed her pistol at the mutant and fired several times until it fell to the ground. For safety, she lifted its corpse and threw it down with the others.
"BeBe was right. Looks like some of them have abilities too," I said, catching my breath.
"They're definitely using them to push us to kill each other faster. The alternative is to get torn apart by these beasts. I need to find Gideon quickly," she said, sitting down in front of me.
"Who is Gideon?"
"My boyfriend. We were both chosen and now we're stuck here." She pulled a water bottle from her backpack and drank. "I wonder if there's any way out. I'm afraid we'll all die down here."
"There is!"
"How can you be sure?"
"We've been here for hours, and aside from the capsules we came in, I haven't seen a single other one — doesn't that seem strange to you?"
"I don't follow. What do the capsules have to do with it?"
"There are two reasons an exit might exist. One is this!" I pointed at the collar. "If there were no way out, there'd be no reason to threaten us with these."
"Hmm, you're right. And the other?"
"If there are no signs of other capsules landing, then there must be another way they brought all those hybrids here."
I signaled for her to be quiet and pointed at the collar. BeBe and the Minister were probably listening to everything we said. Then I indicated the huge pillar on the horizon. It was the only structure that could possibly house an elevator going upward.
"How do you plan to get rid of these?" Tsukima‑san said, showing her collar.
"They are surely controlled by the main computer. If only I had a computer in my hands, I could easily hack into their server and deactivate every collar." I'd never been prouder that Araki and his gang always called me a nerd.
"Courage, then," she said, getting to her feet. "I'll come with you. From what I've seen, you can defend yourself well, but you don't have many chances on offense. Fights aren't won by defense alone."
"I have to find my friends," I said. "I can't leave them here."
"Don't worry. If we find a way to deactivate those damn things, it'll be easier for everyone to get out. Still, it's more than a coincidence that you ended up here with someone you know."
"It's not a coincidence. Everything was engineered to give us the hope of staying together in a game this cruel. But if there's even the smallest chance to get out of here, I'll get as many people to escape as I can. I promise."

☆Alice
No sign of her.
No matter where I looked, I couldn't find Shiori-chi anywhere. Harugaki and Joshua tried to cheer me up, but all I could feel was growing worry for her.
We reached a fork in the path: two iron bridges stretched over a spot where the river plunged into an abyss below. Each bridge led in a different direction.
"Where do we go now?" I asked.
"Both seem to head toward the pillar, but I'm not sure… they might lead to a dead end," Joshua replied uncertainly.
There was no point in overthinking something we couldn't know. We decided to take the right bridge. The distance between the two bridges was starting to grow; we were about halfway across and roughly twenty meters apart.
"Who's there?"
I whipped my head toward the other bridge and saw the elegant woman with the black-haired girl I'd seen at the gathering.
"Look at this, idiot—three contestants all together. At this rate, we'll finish this stupid game in no time." The woman slapped the girl across the head and tossed her to the ground.
"Hey!" I shouted. "Why did you hit her? She didn't do anything!"
"How dare you interfere in the lesson a noblewoman is giving her servant? Didn't your filthy parents ever teach you manners?" She grabbed the girl by the hair and yanked her head back. "This unfaithful servant betrayed me by secretly entering the lottery without telling her mistress. I bet she even planned to win and escape the island on her own, but her stupid power to sniff out enemies from afar won't let her survive. Honestly, I'm not even sure her power works—she didn't even notice you."
"I'd smash the few teeth you've got left if you weren't lucky enough to be on the other side of that bridge, you filthy old bitch!"
"Alice-chan, calm down!" Harugaki intervened, grabbing me by the shoulders. "This isn't our business; we don't even know that girl."
"Jin's right. Let's get away as quickly as possible," Joshua agreed.
"You'll regret insulting Madame Gabrielle Laurent! I'll personally make sure you end up in the grave!" She kicked the girl in the stomach and raised her hands above her head.
I felt a strong wind coming from beneath our bridge.
"I don't like this wind, it's not natural. Run!" Joshua shouted.
Blinded by anger, I reached for my gun, but Joshua grabbed my arm and pulled me away.
A huge tornado formed out of nowhere beneath my feet, tearing part of the bridge down. Luckily, all three of us managed to grab hold of the railings. I was thankful to Joshua for stopping me from taking a one-way sightseeing trip 100 meters down!
"I don't care what your powers or weapons are — die! No power can overcome my Tornado!"
I dug my fists into the rail, but it was about to give. I was going to be sucked into the vortex and never see Shiori‑chi again!
My tears were cut short by a violent shout. The servant stood up in front of her mistress with a defiant look — then exploded into laughter.
A mad laugh.
"In this game there are no masters — only allies and enemies! To survive, you must kill anything that moves, hybrid or human!"
"What are you saying, you fool? Do you want to die too?" Madame Gabrielle shouted.
The girl pulled a knife from the sleeves of her ragged dress and plunged it into her mistress's arms.
Immediately, the tornado ceased, and we climbed back onto the remnants of the bridge. The woman screamed in pain, but the girl kept stabbing her arms. In this way, she could no longer use weapons or her ability. Madame Gabrielle kicked her away, got up, and ran along the bridge, but the servant laughed again. "Did you really think my ability was just Smell? This is what you deserve for always underestimating me, old witch!" A small black sphere formed in the girl's right hand. The servant laughed once more and hurled it at her former mistress.
The sphere instantly grew larger, beginning to suck in everything nearby. Madame Gabrielle, her arms too weak to hold onto the bridge's rails, was immediately pulled in. What an ironic end for someone who had just tried to kill us with a tornado!
The suction force reached us as well. We were forced to grab the bridge's rails once again. The power of that tiny black hole far surpassed that of the tornado. When the black hole finally stopped sucking, we were hit by a powerful shockwave.
I looked up toward the other side of the bridge: the girl was still standing there, laughing, completely covered in her mistress's blood. Most likely, Madame Gabrielle's body had been compressed into such a tiny space by intense pressure that it literally exploded.
The girl stared at me, laughing.
Just her gaze made me tremble. Being surrounded by thousands of hybrids wouldn't have scared me this much.
Joshua grabbed my hand and dragged me away to the other side of the bridge, while my eyes remained fixed on her.
