God of War—Seth.
King of the Gods—Ra.
Evelyn felt as if thunder had exploded inside her skull. The reality before her was simply too insane to process.
She was just an ordinary librarian—how on earth had she ended up in a situation where gods themselves were about to clash?
Throughout history, what librarian had ever experienced something like this? Instinctively, Evelyn stepped back, hiding behind Herman.
"Could you maybe put that barrier around me again?" she asked tentatively.
Without that divine shield, she didn't feel safe at all. She'd read plenty of myths about mortals caught in divine battles—and how they never ended well.
"You've got good survival instincts," Herman remarked.
He knew exactly what she meant—the same barrier he'd conjured with divine power during his fight against Apocalypse.
To be fair, though the God of War before him seemed greatly weakened, he was still a higher-tier being. Shielding the fragile Evelyn was simply common sense.
As divine power stirred within him, a streak of light shot forth and landed where Evelyn stood. It quickly expanded into a luminous barrier, wrapping her in a protective glow. Feeling its warmth, Evelyn finally exhaled in relief.
Still, anxiety lingered in her chest. She was sure Herman had heard Seth's words clearly, yet when the War God mentioned that the one slumbering here was Ra, the Sun God, the wizard she'd hired didn't even flinch.
"So he really has been targeting the Sun God Ra all along…" she thought, more certain than ever of her suspicion. The god Herman sought to hunt must indeed be the King of the Egyptian Gods.
As for whether he could win... From the perspective of someone traveling alongside him, Evelyn certainly didn't want him to lose.
Earlier, she had caught Seth calling Herman a "strange god." That made her wonder—if Seth recognized him as a deity, then Herman must also exist on a divine level. The thought made everything feel a little less impossible.
A god defeating another god wasn't beyond comprehension, after all. Still, as the realization sank in, Evelyn couldn't help but feel as if their journey had become surreal—almost mythical. Wasn't this practically a story of traveling alongside a god?
"I have to write all this down one day. Yes… I'll call it Tales of Gods and Demons," she decided silently.
Hidden behind the glowing barrier, her eyes fixed nervously on the scene before her. Herman now stood face to face with Seth, the God of War.
"What drew me here is your essence," Herman said evenly, staring at the crocodile-headed being before him. The death energy within him surged more intensely than ever.
He knew exactly who this god was—the Lord of Strength in Egyptian myth, one of the Ennead, and among the mightiest of war gods.
It was unexpected, but not entirely unreasonable. As one of the Ennead, Seth naturally embodied laws that amplified death itself.
Though Death God Anubis was only Seth's son in name, the fact that Seth hadn't suspected betrayal proved that he truly could sire a child infused with the essence of death.
"You greedy seeker of power," Seth growled, his crimson eyes flashing. "It seems you've chosen eternal slumber as your fate."
His voice was cold and murderous, his gaze terrifying. The red mist swirling around them pulsed with killing intent.
"Cast me into eternal slumber?" Herman's tone was calm, his smirk openly mocking. "Do you really think you have that kind of power?"
Indeed.
Among the ancient Egyptian gods, Seth was second only to Ra, the Sun God. He was a true Sky Father–level being—once immensely powerful.
But that was the Seth of his prime. Herman could clearly see that the god standing before him now was far from that.
The divine radiance surrounding Seth flickered weakly, his essence unstable and dim. His hesitation to strike only confirmed it.
If he truly had the confidence to win, this hot-blooded God of War would never have wasted time talking.
"I even doubt you can leave this underground palace."
Herman chuckled as he stepped back through the grand doors of the subterranean hall.
Sure enough, Seth's expression immediately turned grim. He raised a massive clawed hand, intending to grab Herman by the throat, but his movement stopped cold at the doorway—he couldn't cross the threshold.
He truly was trapped here. The realization, humiliating as it was, sent the ill-tempered War God into a furious rage.
"You despicable, shameless wretch! Were it not for my duty to guard my Father God's eternal rest, I would tear you apart and feed your flesh to the vultures of the desert!"
Seth's furious roar echoed through the chamber, but no matter how enraged he became, the space between him and the gate remained an impassable boundary.
A god of war, reduced to screaming curses from behind a door.
Any ordinary mortal would have been crushed by such divine fury.
But Herman was no ordinary mortal.
"Even if you could reach me… what exactly would you do?" he said calmly. After confirming his suspicion, he stepped forward once more, reentering the hall.
He had no reason to fear a weakened Sky Father–level deity. Even in his prime, the War God Seth would not have been his equal.
"Arrogant fool! You're begging for death!"
Seth's crimson eyes flared with delight as he saw Herman step back inside. The air rippled violently as red energy flooded the hall—a wave of malevolent power drawn forth from the depths by the War God himself.
"You think the seal binds me so tightly I can't harm you?" Seth's voice dripped with venomous mockery.
"If that's what you believe, then you're gravely mistaken! Just because I can't use my own full power doesn't mean I lack other means!"
Behind him, waves of terrifying energy erupted. A surge of crimson light condensed and then shot forward, streaking toward Herman with deadly speed.
"Pay the price for your arrogance!"
Seth's roar carried twisted satisfaction, certain that Herman couldn't withstand the attack.
"Hm?"
Sensing the incoming threat, Herman's divine power flared, golden light bursting from his body and forming a radiant shield of defense.
A heartbeat later, the crimson beam slammed into him.
The explosion that followed was cataclysmic—violent shockwaves tore through the hall, golden and red light colliding in a storm of destruction. Everything touched by the surging energy was reduced to dust.
Fortunately, Evelyn was protected by Herman's divine barrier; otherwise, she would have been obliterated along with the statues and walls around them.
"Oh my god…"
Evelyn's eyes widened as she watched the shield ripple and pulse under the onslaught. The apocalyptic chaos beyond it made her fear even the divine protection might not hold.
"Chaotic, corrupted power… this aura doesn't belong to your laws."
Herman braced himself against the crimson beam's relentless force. A brilliant golden light flared in his eyes as his gaze pierced through the red haze, locking onto the source of the attack at the center of the hall.
It was a book.
A book he knew all too well—
The Darkhold.
