A ghost watched me and my family sleep.
I would like to start off by saying I didn't believe in the paranormal. I grew up in a very sensible house, my parents always tried to keep me as educated as possible so that I could go to college, get a good job and eventually start a family.
Ghosts, demons, monsters under the bed, I was never afraid of those. But that's since changed.
Just the other night, I woke up. I felt something cold touch my face, and when I opened my eyes, I found nothing. I kept my eyes open, as I looked at what I assumed was the wall. But for some reason, something inside felt a bit off. I really couldn't make out anything, but I kept looking.
It was kind of like seeing a dark figure in your room, but it's actually just your chair. Except I actually couldn't see anything at all. It was just a dark void before me, and yet I couldn't take my eyes off it.
I'd adjusted to the darkness, so I could see pretty well. But still, even then, I absolutely could not decipher what exactly I was looking at. One part of me thought it was nothing, while the other part of me was fully convinced what was before me was a person, a human being, watching me.
Of course, I didn't want to reach out and touch it; it's a bit childish but the idea of reaching out and suddenly being attacked was a very real fear. I didn't know exactly what to do.
Eventually, I came to the conclusion it was my wife. I called out her name, hearing silence. I felt behind me with my elbow, but I clearly felt her body next to my own. At this point, I started panicking, and I kept looking at the darkness, wondering what actually was before me.
I'm a gun owner, but it was in a safe inside the closet so that my son couldn't get to it; if it was an intruder, then it had already gotten inside my room and was blocking my way to the closet.
I tried to rationalize that it couldn't be a person. I always make sure all of the windows and doors on the lower levels are locked before I go to sleep, and I didn't hear any breaking of glass or the opening of a door.
As well, the upstairs hallway of my house has an annoyingly creaky floor, so I figured that surely I would've heard someone walking.
But a part of me wasn't convinced. I extended my hand slowly, still cautious of a sudden attack. The darkness moved.
Not much, but it undeniably moved.
By this point, I fully believed there was someone there, so I quickly turned on the light on the nightstand, and in an instant, the figure had already arrived at the door. What I saw of it was a purely black, humanoid figure. I've never seen a creature move so fast before in my entire life.
I yelled in an attempt to wake my family up, only to see the door fling open and then slam shut. But instead of making a loud noise, it was incredibly quiet, almost to the point that I couldn't hear it.
I got out of bed, rushing out of the room in a hurry, before I saw my son's door open. I ran to his room, seeing him still in bed, his window open. A cold chill ran down my spine. Not out of fear, but because it felt as though within an instant the temperature dropped. I saw frost on the window, despite it being a warm night.
I haven't seen the creature, or whatever it is, since. I called the police, and we checked the security footage from my house and the neighborhood, finding that it had attempted to enter multiple houses.
I would say that it's just someone who broke into my house. I understand that conclusion, but I can't bring myself to say that's 100% the truth. The security cameras have full audio, yet the night was always silent, even when he was close.
The door slamming silently, the absence of creaking noises when it ran, and the cold air that filled the room and the outside, and the change from 40 degrees to 0 in the span of just one minute, all of it makes me really believe it was some kind of paranormal event.
Sorry if this wasn't the most well-put together recollection, I'm mostly just going off of what I felt and thought.
Ever since that night, I've kept all of the windows in the house locked. I don't know what it wanted from me, I don't know if it wanted anything at all. It didn't do anything to hurt me or my family, even though it came in through my son's window.
All I know is that it simply watched me.
…
Edit: A lot of you guys have questions, so I'll do my best to answer them. First, I knew it was 40 degrees to 0 because it was actually recorded that over the span of one minute, it dropped 40 degrees as it was leaving. After the fact, I checked the weather channel to make sure it wasn't just me. Here's the link to the day it happened, since I know you'll ask for it: ████████████████████
Second, in the investigation, it was concluded that the most likely way he got in was through my son's unlocked window. Footage showed him circling around my house to try and find an unlocked opening, and my son has a habit of not locking his window after he opens it to get cool air on hot nights.
Third, I didn't see its face. By the time I turned the light on, it was already at my door. I only saw a black blur and a somewhat humanoid shape. I know it was probably my mind being weird in that regard, but it still stands.
…
Edit 2: Wow, this post really blew up. I never expected it'd grow this much, but I'm glad there's some kind of awareness for it. Weird seeing the phantom of the scariest night of my life become loved by strangers on the internet.
As well, the creature, which you all decided to call "The Black Wraith" has hit the local news in my area. So to all of you who were saying I had no proof and was making it all up, you're wrong. The news video, which includes footage of it going around the neighborhood and around my house, is free on youtube.
So to those who still ask why I believe it's paranormal, look at the footage and the temperature drop. I don't need you to think the slamming of the door was silent; that's something only I and my wife experienced. But while the other scenarios aren't entirely impossible, I know what I saw, and I know what I believe.
All that being said, here's the link to the news coverage. ████████████████████
I've answered all the questions I could. I have all too many myself. Goodbye.
