Luo Yu calmly stepped out from behind the distant treetops, landing gracefully on the ground and retrieving the spear he had thrown earlier.
Xie Yue's face went pale in shock, completely caught off guard—he never expected Luo Yu to reappear at such a critical moment.
Yan Mu's eyes flickered with fear as he quietly slipped the soul bone into his own chest.
Hu Liena's tall, elegant legs moved swiftly, her enchanting eyes lighting up with relief as she rushed to Luo Yu's side, her cheeks flushed. "Thank you… really, you saved us again."
Luo Yu's lips curved slightly. "This time… you could say you saved yourself."
"Huh?" Hu Liena looked puzzled.
Not intending to explain, Luo Yu merely shook his head.
"You were leaving, weren't you? How did you suddenly come back?" Hu Liena asked.
"Leaving?" Luo Yu chuckled lightly, then turned and strode toward Yan.
"Hand it over."
"Hand over what?" Yan asked cautiously.
"Don't play dumb with me."
"I don't understand what you're saying," Yan feigned ignorance.
"Really?"
Luo Yu sneered and did something completely unexpected by Xie Yue and his sister: he kicked up a gust of wind, striking Yan squarely in the chest and sending him flying like a ragged sack.
Bang!
Yan landed hard on the ground, momentarily dazed, then twisted his face into a grimace as he glared at Luo Yu. "I'm from the Spirit Hall! How dare you disrespect me like this?"
"Disrespect?"
Luo Yu moved in swiftly, stamping down on Yan's body. Yan's eyes turned blood-red, yet he didn't scream, only seethed with hatred.
"Give me the soul bone," Luo Yu said coldly.
Yan's expression faltered. "What soul bone? Where? I don't have any soul bone!"
Luo Yu furrowed his brow, grabbed Yan by the collar, and lifted him up with a chilling tone: "You really thought I left just now?"
The entire scene froze in shock at this revelation.
Hu Liena instantly realized what Luo Yu meant: if she hadn't expressed her gratitude earlier, he might have ignored them entirely the next time danger struck.
Of course, the quick-witted girl also noticed that his not leaving implied he genuinely cared about their safety, not the cold indifference he had shown.
Her curiosity and admiration for the strong man flared in her eyes, causing her heart to tremble.
Xie Yue watched Yan warily, knowing full well that if Luo Yu hadn't stayed, every move Yan made would have been under his scrutiny.
Hearing Luo Yu's cold tone, Yan's heart skipped a beat. His mind went blank as if struck by lightning, his lips trembling like a lamb awaiting slaughter.
Luo Yu shook his head. Such a person was worthless, not even worth the time. He tightened his grip on Yan's collar. "Give it willingly. Don't waste my time."
Yan's pride flared. "I killed that beast! Why should I hand over its soul bone to you?"
Luo Yu snorted, his arm exploding with strength, hurling Yan to the ground.
"I could give it to you—"
A flicker of hope appeared on Yan's face.
"But clearly… you're not worthy," Luo Yu said coldly.
Yan glanced at Hu Liena and Xie Yue for help—he knew on his own he was no match for Luo Yu.
Hu Liena opened her mouth to speak, but Luo Yu, still smirking, said to Yan, "Guess how long I've been here?"
"What? You thought about leaving them here during multiple crises, then escaping on your own?"
Xie Yue's body shivered as he replayed the events in his mind.
Yan's face turned purple. "What are you saying? We're partners! How could I ever abandon them?"
"Oh?" Luo Yu's face carried a mocking smile. "Don't you think your companions would believe your lies?"
When the fire monkey horde surrounded you earlier, what did you think? 'Better I survive than my companions?'
Yan's eyes flickered, guilt creeping in as he met Luo Yu's piercing gaze.
Still, he knew his reputation was ruined—he wouldn't last in Spirit Hall if he continued like this.
Struggling to his feet, he shouted, "Even if I can't beat you now, I won't let you insult my character! I could never abandon my companions!"
Luo Yu sneered. "Is that so?"
Yan turned to Xie Yue and Hu Liena, blood-red eyes blazing. "I've always acted with a clear conscience! I've never lied! And you… you fabricated stories just to steal my soul bone!"
"What if it's a lie?" Luo Yu asked.
Yan stammered, "If it's a lie… may a thousand swords pierce my heart and kill me!"
Luo Yu shook his head, narrowing his eyes as he stepped forward and kicked again.
Bang!
Yan's body flew, the purple, lustrous soul bone dropping to the ground.
Luo Yu picked it up, brushed it off, and began to walk away.
"You… you're outrageous!" Yan's eyes flashed with hatred and frustration, yelling at Luo Yu's back.
Luo Yu's brow twitched. "Let me give you some advice: if I were you, I'd say nothing. Investigate me in secret, then use all your power for revenge."
Hearing this, Yan's eyes lit up with a wild excitement: Yes! That's it! Why didn't I endure a little longer?
He suddenly became silent, even smiling, yet his mind harbored a cold, murderous resolve. Today's incident… you will pay a heavy price.
"Fools," muttered Xie Yue and Hu Liena, shrinking back in alarm at Yan's predicament.
Luo Yu sighed, looking at this simpleton with pity.
Hu Liena stepped forward. "Can you spare my companion's life, benefactor?"
"You have good sense," Luo Yu replied, "but save this kind of request for later."
He locked eyes with Yan, a crescent moon flickering in his right eye, unleashing a silver radiance. The exhausted Yan was immediately dragged into an illusion, his vision clouded with confusion.
"I'll ask, you answer."
"Yes," Yan responded like a puppet.
Hu Liena and Xie Yue stared in amazement, curiosity piqued rather than alarmed.
"Did you ever think about abandoning your companions and escaping alone?"
Yan's vacant expression turned desperate. "Yes… yes, I thought about it. As long as I survived, what did my companions matter?"
Even though Hu Liena and Xie Yue had suspected this, they were still shocked, disgusted, and disdainful.
Luo Yu smiled. "You like Hu Liena, yes? Why would you think of abandoning her?"
Yan's greedy eyes betrayed him. "I like her… her beauty and her position valued by the High Priest. Who cares about her annoying, righteous personality?"
The silver light vanished. Luo Yu's expression was faintly amused. Yan stared, terrified.
"What… what have you done to me?"
"Relax," Luo Yu said. "Just got you to speak a bit of truth."
Yan's features exaggerated in shock, his face drained of color.
"You're shameless!" Hu Liena's eyes glinted with icy anger.
"I… I trusted you as a friend!" Xie Yue clenched his fists, furious beyond measure.
Luo Yu toyed with the purple, lustrous soul bone. Seeing Yan attempt to protest, he flung the soul bone, piercing through Yan's chest and pinning him to a tree.
"This—"
Hu Liena and Xie Yue were stunned by Luo Yu's decisive action.
Of course, Luo Yu couldn't leave him alive; a reckless, selfish person like Yan was a danger to all.
"Any issues?" Luo Yu asked Hu Liena.
"He's beyond redemption. Spirit Hall can't accommodate such a scoundrel," Hu Liena ground her teeth.
"Oh?" Luo Yu looked at this fox-like yet upright girl and found his admiration for her growing.
Xie Yue bowed slightly. "Thank you for saving us twice and revealing this man's true nature. Otherwise, he would have remained a hidden danger."
Luo Yu nodded, his cold gaze softening slightly.
"Seeing as you're both exhausted, follow me."
"May I know your name—"
"Later. About twenty or so heartbeats, spirit beasts will arrive. We need to leave now." Luo Yu had been vigilant from the moment he appeared.
"What about the soul bone?" Hu Liena asked.
"The soul bone?" Luo Yu laughed at Yan's corpse.
"That Tiger Demon Cat suffered immense humiliation in life; the energy inside the soul bone is explosive, a living time bomb. Whoever absorbs it dies."
Hu Liena suddenly understood. This was fate; even without intervention, anyone absorbing it would perish.
A glimmer passed through her eyes. Could it be that Luo Yu never intended to claim the soul bone, but instead saved Yan's life?
Yan, in his lowly self-importance, had misread everything.
Hu Liena's gaze softened, her thoughts complicated: this man… was different.
And so, the two followed Luo Yu, their hearts strangely comforted, racing with an unfamiliar excitement.
Back at the clearing, the approaching spirit beasts, sensing blood, quickly devoured Yan's corpse. A blue-faced feral wolf greedily snatched the soul bone and swallowed it without hesitation.
Boom!
An explosion erupted, blood and flesh scattered, trees toppled, and a deep, eerie pit remained, filled with wailing, vengeful spirits.
