Chapter 7 - worthless days

That morning, two people came to check on me. Noticing my eyes watching them, they paused, Set down my breakfast, and quickly walked out. I was right about the time then. The same man that took me came into the room with a clipboard and a pen. Smiling like nothing was wrong. He knelt down near my head.

"Good morning sunshine! Oh wait, you were awake for all of that" he chuckled darkly. As if he figured out what I was feeling he looked at me.

"Oh don't be like that. You'll be loved, a hero. All thanks to me. And I'll get 40% of the profit." He looked down at me with distain. "At least you are pretty huh".

He took some notes on my condition quickly and checked my vitals calmly. Like this wasn't happening to me. Like he hadn't just kidnapped me and put me through the worst pain of my life for a month. I wanted to yell, to scream, to cry, but for some reason I felt this sick dude would get a kick out of that.

He stood up annoyed with my expression but didn't say anything. As he walked out, he kicked the tray of food to the side for no reason.

The rest of that day I spent either walking around the room, using the pen to draw things on my skin, or randomly writing in my book. The food they gave me tasted bland and looked worse than slop. I was in that place for days after I had woken up for the first time according to the clock. One day, I overhead people talking.

They were chatting in low voices, like they didn't want anyone to overhear them.... especially me. They were talking about the lab rats like me. It was easy to hear their conversation but I couldn't make out the second person completely, like they were standing too far. Their conversation went a little like this....

"But she doesn't have any abilities yet. How can we start the-" one said before abruptly being cut off by the second.

"Then we...and.....maybe then she'll.....or else we toss her." The second one sounded like they hated something. Their voice was shushed and I couldn't hear all of what they were saying despite moving as close as I could with the chain.

"Rod wouldn't like that. He says failures need to be killed in order to keep this all a secret"

"ROD DOESNT HAVE TO KNOW" the second one yelled at the first. Angry for some unknown reason. The second continued, a little quieter but I managed to hear it all.

"We already have a fucking great kid with amazing abilities. And we basically had to revive her. Stop complaining about one failed experiment. Why get your hands dirty when she was found trying to kill herself." The second one rudely stated.

My blood ran cold at that comment. They expected me to sit back and die. I was nothing to anyone in here and I knew it. My days seemed worthless. My life seemed like it hung by a dirty, discarded rope that was fraying every time I breathed. Something churned in my stomach. A feeling so strong it took over all my emotions.....a need. To escape.

Even that simple thought alone felt like breaking through a thick piece of iron with only your pinky finger. Like breaking diamonds with nothing but a broken pencil eraser. I overheard one mention something about poison and knew I would have to think very hard about what to do next.

I would have to survive through any means necessary. any.

The next couple of days were torture. I didn't eat anything, focused on the only word in my mind. Poison. I refused to move, not even to mark my calendar.

I basically played dead for days. My stomach growling but my brain telling me that I couldn't listen. Soon, I stopped even being checked on. Left to rot like trash.

I decided right then and there what I would do. Revenge.

Nothing in this world worked for me, and thanks to my notebook. I remembered everything.

The names of my sisters tormentors. The lawyer who bribed the jury and the judge. The judge and jury for accepting the bribe. And even the officers that laughed at her body that day.

My mind went dark. Wanting nothing more than their justice to be taken out by my hands. I kept repeating one phrase in my head.

"They'll all pay. They'll all pay. They'll all pay."

My rage boiled. Something inside me stirred. My mind went hazy. Without noticing, black rose from the ground, moving. Like a vine or a tentacle. It moved with purpose.

A snapping sound caught my attention as whatever was just there disappeared. My ankle was free.

This....was my chance. What I waited for. I wouldn't lay down and take it anymore....
