Chapter 2 - New Roommates and The Level Upper

Kamijou Touma woke up late this morning. After his little battle with Academy City's Level 5 esper Misaka Mikoto, he was drained and went to bed first thing. He woke up drenched in sweat, stumbling over his stuff as he went to the fridge. Sadly, some of his food had gone bad due to the power outage.

He went out to the balcony to get some fresh air but didn't expect the two things he saw, or should he say, the two people he saw. One was a small blonde boy, and the other was a nun with white hair.

The nun with white hair woke up first, and the first thing she uttered was, "I'm hungry." The second one woke up, but before he could say anything, his stomach growled.

The problematic nun kept complaining about food while the small blonde boy watched with a blank expression. Touma picked up a wrapper from the floor and presented it to her. Before he could even follow up, she ate it in one gulp, biting his hand as well. A loud scream could be heard echoing through the apartment building.

"I suppose I need to start with an introduction."

"Actually, I would rather you started with explaining why you were hanging there."

"My name is Index."

"That's clearly a fake name! What do you mean Index!? Are you a table of contents or something!?"

As the two were bantering, Kousei just watched in astonishment. Touma's luck was truly horrible. First, he got jumped by a Level 5 esper for no reason, then he woke up in a puddle of his own sweat, next most of his food expired because his fridge lost power, and lastly, he had to deal with a nun and a small brat. In terms of luck, EMIYA had some competition.

Wait, it's also July 20th if I'm correct. That means the Level Upper incident is taking place today. If I help Kuroko and Misaka take care of it, I could earn some favor with them. I'll most likely tackle that later, but for now, I'll just focus on the present.

"Oh, I almost forgot about you." I refocused to see Touma looking at me with curiosity.

"My name is Kousei Oogimiya. I'm a transfer student to Sakugawa Middle School, and I'm currently homeless." Touma pinched the bridge of his nose in pure exasperation.

"I'd like to use your restroom really quickly." Touma pointed in its direction. The reason I asked wasn't because I actually needed to go, but because I knew what was going to happen next. I waited five minutes, and then I heard it. Touma used his Imagine Breaker on Index's clothing, which made it all fall apart. Then came the biting and Touma's girly cries for her to stop.

I walked out of the bathroom to see Touma covered in bite marks and Index patching up her garments. I let out a chuckle that drew everyone's attention. "I'm sorry, I had a bad premonition that something bad would happen, and I guess I was right."

Touma looked at me before sighing. "I'm guessing you need somewhere to stay too, am I correct?" I nodded slowly, and to my amusement, he let out a long sigh. I think his wallet is going to start hurting after the first week. I'll be sure to pay him some cash if it gets too much for him.

Index was about to leave, but Touma stopped her and agreed to let her stay since she had nowhere else to go. They agreed that at some point she'd go to the church. One glance at the clock made me and Touma realize something. We were both late for school. Touma was late for high school, and I was late for my first day.

I opened a portal and rummaged through it a bit to grab my uniform. Afterwards, I bolted to the bathroom and changed into it. When I was finished, I left and waved Touma goodbye to start my first day of school.

Timeskip

I arrived at school just to realize it was summer vacation. I'm truly a fool of fools. I let out a long sigh at my own idiocy. My best bet was to follow Saten and Uiharu around all day and try my best to prevent any major catastrophe from happening.

The July sun beat down on the Academy City pavement, making the air shimmer with heat. Summer break had left the schoolyards empty, but the city itself was still buzzing. Needing a blast of air conditioning and a moment to collect my thoughts, I pushed open the door to a small, quiet coffee shop.

The chill hit immediately, a welcome relief. As my eyes adjusted to the dim light, I spotted them in a corner booth. There was no mistaking them: the spiky-haired teleporter I had seen from a distance, Shirai Kuroko, sitting with a girl with brown hair and a familiar military-style cap. Across from them, the distinctive lavender hair of Uiharu Kazari caught my eye as she chatted animatedly with none other than Saten Ruiko.

My heart gave a small, involuntary jump. There they were, the main characters of this world, just living their lives. I hadn't met them yet. To them, I was nobody.

I slid into a seat at a small table far from theirs, my back mostly to them. Ordering an iced coffee, I pretended to be engrossed in my phone, but my entire focus was on the distant murmur of their conversation.

Then, out of nowhere, this tired and creepy looking doctor started taking off her clothes, and to that, I stared at her with pure lust on my face.

After that whole ordeal, they left the coffee shop. I followed them out, but I ran into some trouble, or should I just say, Touma. He walked up to me and tried to make small talk, asking how my day went. Then Misaka started chasing us. Well, Misaka started chasing him, but he didn't notice. We both just walked together peacefully while I tried to keep my composure. The peace shattered in an instant as Touma started getting reprimanded by her.

At some point, Touma asked if she knew where a church might be. She pointed in a certain direction. Touma said, "Thank you, Sparky," which, unsurprisingly, led to him getting zapped. The funniest part was that she fried everyone's devices in her attempt to zap only Touma. Me and Touma looked down to see a police bot on the floor. It was completely malfunctioning. Those things were about 1.2 million yen each, so Touma quickly bolted away from the area so he wouldn't get in trouble.

Touma let out a groan. "Why do I always get in these types of situations?" Me and Misaka caught up to him before he could keep running. Misaka tried taunting him more while all I could do was watch Touma try to weasel his way out of this situation.

As their bickering hit a momentary lull, I saw my chance. Clearing my throat, I took a small step forward, drawing Misaka's attention away from her usual target.

"Um, excuse me," I began, offering a slight, polite bow. "My name is Oogimiya Kousei. I'm new. It seems I've gotten caught up in your usual routine." I glanced at the still smoldering police bot, then back at her. "It's, well, quite an introduction to the city."

Misaka Mikoto blinked, her aggressive posture softening slightly as her focus shifted fully to me. She looked me up and down, her expression moving from battle ready irritation to curious scrutiny.

"Oogimiya, huh?" she said, her tone more measured. "Yeah, sorry you had to see that. This guy just has a talent for bringing trouble with him." She gestured toward Touma with a thumb. "I'm Misaka Mikoto. Try to stay away from this one if you know what's good for you."

It wasn't a grand meeting, but it was real. I had officially introduced myself to the Railgun.

After that ordeal I went back into Touma's apartment. I decided to get some much needed sleep for the following day. I had much to be prepared for.

I woke up early the next day. The power finally came back so now the heat wasn't basically cooking me alive. I went to take a shower, brush my teeth, and prepared to help Judgment out on the case. Even if they didn't need it, I'd rather help them out than just watch things go down without doing anything.

I slipped out of Touma's apartment and immediately after I saw Saten from afar. I kept a safe distance, blending into the summer crowds, as she wandered the streets with a restless, almost desperate air. My vigilance was rewarded when I saw her turn into a less crowded side street. I followed, pressing myself against the corner of a building to watch.

I watched Saten hesitate before approaching three thugs who were picking on a kid. He was pleading to get the Level Upper. Saten ran into the fray and asked them to stop harassing the kid. Saten was against the wall, and the thug kicked the wall right next to her head. "Say that again, brat. You've got some guts, kid, flapping your yap here. But you powerless wimps have no right to tell me what to do."

Before he could continue, golden chains ensnared him and his lackeys from head to toe. I peered out from the corner. "Picking on people because you're stronger than them isn't really nice, don't you think?" Immediately all eyes turned to me as I appeared from the corner. This opponent was quite troublesome to deal with one on one. His ability tricks you into thinking he's somewhere else which makes it easier for you to be caught off guard. Thankfully I caught him off guard so it wouldn't turn into a problem.

Instantly Shirai knocked them all out. The thugs crumpled to the ground before they could even comprehend what was happening. The teleporter straightened her uniform, then turned her sharp gaze from the incapacitated thugs to me.

Her eyes narrowed slightly, taking in the golden chains that still glimmered around the men before they dissolved into motes of light. "I have to thank you for your assistance in dealing with these guys," Shirai said, her tone formal but carrying a clear note of curiosity. "Your intervention helped her out a lot, not like I couldn't take care of it myself though." She tried acting smug, but I could tell she was internally grateful for my assistance.

After that whole ordeal I looked around a bit and realized I was forgetting something. Shirai is here, the thugs are here, Anti Skill is here. But where is Saten? She was holding the MP3 player, wasn't she? Oh no. I immediately bolted toward the park hoping I could stop her before it was too late. Sadly, I wasn't quick enough. Her friends were already experiencing the high of gaining new powers. This is going to backfire on them later. Hopefully me being here doesn't cause some butterfly effect that makes everything worse. On second thought, I'll make sure that doesn't happen. The one behind this is that shady doctor if I'm correct. If I can find her, that'll help me a lot.

I checked every hospital and park bench I could find. I scanned the crowds at every street vendor and shopping district. After hours of searching Academy City, I couldn't find her. Was this shady doctor actively avoiding me? I guess I'll just have to wait for three days and hope for the best. I'm not that worried, because even if I can't make sure they're all right, I'm sure Misaka and Shirai won't stop until they find it. I'll just bide my time until then.

The next three days were a tense exercise in patience. I watched from a distance as the Level Upper's influence spread, a silent plague of stolen power. During this time I visited Komoe's house to make sure Kamijou and Index were doing all right and preparing for the inevitable battle that would take place. I looked at all the spots I knew where things were about to go down.

Then, on the third day, the city erupted. Sirens wailed, and the roar of a high performance engine tore through the afternoon. I snuck onto one of the Anti Skill trucks and waited to hear fighting in the background. Then, after they stopped for a short while, I heard the Anti Skill officers telling Kiyama to put down her weapon and come with them slowly with her hands behind her back. Then I heard gunshots and a huge gust of air explode out of nowhere. I exited the vehicle and saw Kiyama with red eyes and deep bags under them. This is where the fun begins.

End of Chapter

The chapter was rushed, which I didn't like. I really wanted to just release it as quickly as possible. The next chapter I'll take my time with and try my best to write an interesting fight scene. After rereading this I realize that I'm kinda rushing from one major event to another so next chapter I'll try taking things slower

Discord is v2timbit. I'll take any constructive criticism I can get and I hope you enjoyed the story.
