Chapter 10 - Trial of the Alpha

The council's chamber was carved from black stone, circular and cold, illuminated by the flicker of torches that cast long, menacing shadows across the walls. High above, the Blood Moon filtered through the cracks in the ceiling, a crimson eye watching every move. The air smelled of iron, blood, and ancient power.

Lucian stood at the center of the circle, head high, chest bare and scarred, golden eyes gleaming. Aria knelt beside him, claws sheathed but tension radiating from her like heat. The council waited silently, their amber eyes cold and unyielding.

"You stand accused of breaking the Blood Oath," the High Elder intoned, voice echoing through the chamber. "You have marked a human, drawn her into our world, and bound yourself to her. How do you plead?"

Lucian's jaw tightened. "I do not plead," he said, voice calm but filled with authority. "She is marked, yes. But she is mine. She has survived the Hollow, the Blood Moon, the rogues, and she has proven her strength. She belongs here—beside me, bound by blood, mark, and soul."

A ripple of murmurs passed through the council. Some wolves hissed in disapproval; others whispered with curiosity. Aria's pulse raced as she felt the mark flare softly beneath her skin, resonating with Lucian's heartbeat, tied to the Hollow, tied to him.

High Elder Kaeris stepped forward, claws clicking against the stone. "Alpha Lucian, the council's laws exist to maintain balance. You have disrupted that balance. A human cannot wield the mark without endangering us all. The prophecy warned of such interference."

Aria's ears twitched, her instincts bristling. She wanted to growl, to leap into the circle and strike, but Lucian's hand brushed hers lightly, grounding her. The bond pulsed between them, silver light racing beneath her skin. She was bound to him, and he to her. Together, they were stronger than any council could comprehend.

Lucian's gaze swept over the council. "I do not care for prophecy or precedent," he said, voice low and dangerous. "She is marked, she is bound, and she is stronger than you know. To test her would be to risk awakening the very power you fear."

Kaeris's amber eyes narrowed. "Then you will face the Trial of the Alpha. The council has convened to determine whether your actions are defensible, or whether punishment must be administered."

The chamber rumbled as ancient magic awakened. Aria felt the mark flare violently in response to the ritual energy. Her claws extended instinctively. Lucian's presence calmed her, though the pull of the mark, the Hollow, and the Blood Moon combined into a tension that hummed through the air like a living thing.

The High Elder raised his hands, chanting in the old tongue. A ring of silver light encircled Lucian, binding him in place. Aria's mark responded immediately, silver pulses spreading across her skin as though trying to break the bonds.

"Do not fight it," Lucian murmured, lips brushing her ear. "Control it. The bond is our strength."

Aria's heartbeat synced with his. She felt the energy in the room, the power of the council, and the pull of the Blood Moon outside. The Hunger surged, threatening to take over. She flexed her claws and focused, letting the mark flow, letting the silver light burn through her veins, tethering her to Lucian, anchoring him to her.

The council's magic struck Lucian, waves of ancient force meant to test him, to weaken him, to judge him unworthy. Pain lanced through his body, burning like fire and ice, but the bond pulsed in response, sharing strength, fortifying them both. Aria felt every strike, every surge, every wave of punishment—and she channeled it, silver light racing through her veins, muscles coiling, claws digging into stone, heartbeat synchronized with his.

Lucian roared, defiance erupting through him, echoing across the chamber. "I am Alpha! She is marked! We are bound! You cannot judge what you do not understand!"

The council faltered for a fraction of a heartbeat. The room shook. Aria felt her own power expand, a terrifying surge, her body trembling with raw energy she had never known. She was no longer a fledgling marked human—she was the manifestation of the bond, the Hollow, the Blood Moon's will.

She stepped forward, silver light flaring across her skin. Her golden eyes glowed as she looked at the council. "You will not harm him," she said, voice low, calm, and deadly. "Not tonight. Not ever. The bond is stronger than your laws, stronger than your rituals, stronger than your fear. If you strike him, you strike me—and you will regret it."

Kaeris hissed, claws flexing, but the other council members exchanged uneasy glances. The prophecy had warned of a marked human, but none had ever risen to this level of power, bonded to an Alpha in defiance of the laws. The silver light pulsed in response to the Blood Moon, painting the chamber in crimson and silver, as though the heavens themselves recognized Aria's strength.

Lucian stepped free of the council's binding, golden eyes burning. He moved to her side, shoulder brushing hers. The bond flared, linking them, two beings acting as one. The council staggered under the combined force of their presence, powerless against the raw, primal energy that pulsed between them.

High Elder Kaeris stepped back, realizing the futility. "Perhaps… we underestimated the bond," he muttered.

Aria's pulse throbbed, silver light wrapping around her limbs, strength radiating from every movement. "Underestimate it once," she said, claws flexing, "and you will not live to do it again."

Lucian's hand found hers, fingers curling over hers, claws brushing fingertips. The bond flared, pulsing like a heartbeat in the Hollow, and the council could do nothing. They were Alpha and marked, bound by blood, mark, and soul. Together, unstoppable.

Kaeris lowered his gaze. "The council… recognizes your bond. But be warned. The Blood Moon will rise fully soon, and with it… the prophecy will demand its toll. We have witnessed your power, but power carries responsibility—and danger."

Lucian's eyes narrowed, golden and sharp. "We will meet it," he said. "And no council, no rogue, no prophecy, will dictate our path."

Aria's claws retracted slowly, silver light fading, but the mark remained vibrant, alive. She pressed her forehead against Lucian's chest, feeling the warmth, the heartbeat, the tether that bound them. The trial had tested them, judged them, but it had also proven one undeniable truth: together, they were unstoppable.

Outside, the Blood Moon shone brighter, crimson light spilling into the chamber. The prophecy's shadow loomed, but the bond between them blazed like silver fire, stronger than any law, stronger than any fear.

Aria's golden eyes met Lucian's, pulse synced, breath shared. "We survived," she whispered. "Together."

Lucian's lips brushed hers briefly, a touch both intimate and dangerous. "Together," he echoed. "And when the Blood Moon rises fully… nothing will stop us."

The chamber fell silent, the council retreating into shadows, uneasy, wary, and powerless against what they had just witnessed. Aria felt the weight of the mark, the power of the bond, the pull of the Blood Moon—and for the first time, she embraced it fully.

She was no longer human. She was not just an Alpha's mate. She was marked, bonded, and ready. The prophecy might demand its toll, but she and Lucian would face it as one.

And the world—wolves, rogues, council, and prophecy alike—would tremble.
