I sit on the couch, eyes fixed on the laptop screen, fingers moving as I work. Numbers blur slightly, but I force myself to focus. Work keeps my mind steady. Work keeps me safe.
Rion walks over quietly. I don't notice him until a faint, sweet scent reaches me. A bowl of freshly cut fruit is placed on the table in front of me. Then he sits beside me—too close. Close enough that I can feel the heat of his body, the slow rise and fall of his breathing.
I don't look at him. My eyes stay on the screen.
Suddenly, the weight in my hands disappears.
I flinch. "Rion—what are you doing?"
He doesn't answer. Calmly, deliberately, he closes the laptop and sets it aside like it never mattered. I stare at him, stunned.
He meets my gaze, his eyes warm, amused. "Kitten," he says softly, "you're still working even at home. What about me? When are you going to give time to your husband?"
My cheeks burn instantly. "Whose husband?" I snap.
