"Well," he said, amused, "my mum had just drugged me with an aphrodisiac." His laughter joined hers.
"I saw you," she continued quietly, "and the first thing I thought was, God, he's gorgeous. And I've thought that every single day since. I really do love you," she said. "And I wish to God that I could marry you."
Eric's smile faded. He cupped her face, thumbs brushing away stray droplets of water.
"You will marry me, Sera," Eric said. It was a declaration. The water around his chest rippled as he shifted closer, his presence radiating heat and certainty. His eyes locked onto hers.
"Eric…" she started, her chest tightening painfully.
"No," he interrupted gently, lifting a hand to still her, his thumb brushing the pulse at her wrist. "Listen to me." His grip was unyielding. "My mum and dad—they weren't fated mates. But fuck, they loved each other like the world was ending every single day."
