Chapter 78 - Can't bear to part yet.

Rhett suddenly extinguished his cigarette, pressing it hard into the ashtray until it died. He turned to look at her, his eyes burning in the dim light.

"Are you really going to talk to me like this today?" he asked, his voice a low, dangerous thrum.

Kelsey didn't back down. "I have to put an end to this today."

"An end?" The word seemed to roll around in his mouth before he finally spoke it, his voice barely a whisper.

A perplexing, almost pained smile touched his lips. "I rushed over from Spring City. I didn't sleep all night. The first thing I did after landing was come find you. And now you tell me you're marrying someone else?"

Maybe it was just the darkness of the room playing tricks on her, but for a single, fleeting moment, Kelsey thought she saw a raw flash of sadness on Rhett's face.

But it was gone in an instant.

She thought she must have been mistaken.

Someone like Rhett… how could he ever be sad?
