CHAPTER 5: ECHO OF THE FLAME — KAEN'S AWAKENING
[Scene 1 – Veil Academy Infirmary]
The ceiling was white, too white.Kaen blinked against the light, every breath scraping like sand in his lungs. His right arm was wrapped in metal bands humming softly.
Rei stood at the foot of the bed, tablet in hand.
"You burned through two regulators and half your aura core. I should expel you just for existing."
Kaen groaned. "I saved the team. That counts for extra credit, right?"
Rei sighed, half-smiling. "You're reckless, Arata. But there's something else—your core recorded a second resonance. A voice frequency."
Kaen's eyes widened. "So that wasn't just in my head."
Rei's tone hardened. "Whatever it is, it's not human."
[Scene 2 – Dream Space / Inner Flame]
Night fell quickly after they left him alone.Kaen drifted into sleep, but it wasn't rest—it was falling.
He landed in a vast field of burning glass. Each shard reflected moments of his life—his fights, his laughter, his loneliness. At the center stood the woman of light again, her hair a storm of fire and starlight.
"You keep waking me, child of dual flame."
Kaen took a step forward, heat biting his skin.
"Who are you?"
"I am what remains of the Celestial Flame. Once a guardian of creation… now caged in your mortal soul."
Kaen clenched his fists. "Then why do you keep showing me destruction?"
"Because that is how rebirth begins."
The field quaked. Dark smoke oozed from the cracks, taking shape—his shadow self, the mimic reborn, eyes blazing red.
"You can't kill what you fear," the shadow hissed. "I am the fear."
The woman's voice cut through the roar.
"Face it, Kaen Arata. Accept both suns—the light that guides, and the fire that scars."
Kaen roared, aura erupting. Gold and black spiraled, merging instead of clashing. For the first time, the flames didn't hurt. They sang.
"AURA DRIVE — PHASE THREE: SOLAR RESONANCE!"
The world shattered into light.
[Scene 3 – Reality Returns]
Kaen gasped awake. The infirmary alarms screamed.Rei burst in, eyes wide.
"What did you do? Your core just jumped two ranks!"
The air around Kaen shimmered. Gold-black aura streamed like wings, faint but real.He stood, breathing steadily. "I think… I finally heard it. My flame's heartbeat."
Rei stared, speechless.
"That's impossible. Phase Three requires years—"
Kaen smiled, quiet but certain.
"Guess my fire doesn't care about rules."
[Scene 4 – Ryo's Perspective / Abyss Citadel]
A surge of light rippled through the Veil. Ryo felt it instantly, gripping the edge of a black mirror until it cracked.
"He's awakened…"
The masked leader's voice echoed.
"The Celestial core stirs. Prepare the Eclipse Protocol. If he fully merges with that flame, our world dissolves."
Ryo's expression darkened.
"Then I'll stop him—whatever he's become."
[Scene 5 – Veil Academy Balcony – Night]
Kaen stood outside, city lights twinkling below. The night air smelled like rain and ozone. He flexed his hand; the aura wings flickered once more, softer now, like embers waiting.
"You said rebirth starts with destruction," he whispered. "Fine. Then I'll rewrite what gets burned."
Somewhere far above, thunder answered.
[Narration – Chapter End]
The flame no longer sleeps. Its echo has become a heartbeat. And every beat draws the shadow closer.
