Chapter 2 - 2: Abandoned

Seraphina

 Alina and Heathen are engaged???

As I paced the sitting room in my robe, my thoughts flew miles after miles, and I tried to figure out what all of this means, but nothing was coming to mind. Heathen and I were still married, and he always swore that he was over Alina. So, what is this? I was waiting for him to return home and give me an explanation because nothing made sense to me right now. My phone was switched off cause it was blowing up and I was in no state to respond to anyone right now, not in my utterly confused state.

The sound of the door unlocking made me stiffen just as laughter rang through the hallway. I stiffened, because the voices were familiar. In no time, my husband made his way into the sitting room, but he wasn't alone. In his arms was Alina, who was perched like a princess there, her pale skin flawless and her face glowing beautifully.

"Heathen, what is the meaning of this?" I demanded as I marched towards them, my blood boiling at the sight of Alina right now. I couldn't even pinpoint the exact time we fell out. We were once best friends till she stole everything from me and made everything into a damn competition which she always won.

Heathen carefully settled Alina into one of the couches like she was a fragile doll before facing me. "We're engaged, Sera."

I let out a ragged laugh as I threw my hands up. "I'm well aware, thanks to the post blowing up on the net right now! But why? Aren't we married? How can you get engaged to my twin? With my engagement ring?! Please tell me that's a joke." I cried out while watching him purse his lips and pocket his hands.

"I'll have to divorce you, Sera. I've prepared the papers as well. This isn't a joke, I'm really getting married to Alina, and that ring belongs to her anyway cause she was the one I initially got it for." He breathed out in a calm voice and shock made me stagger.

"I'm sorry for not telling you first though, but that was Alina's last wish, to get married and feel what it's like to have a husband. As her best friend, it's my job to grant her that wish." He added like that was supposed to make everything better and I suddenly didn't know whether to laugh or cry right now.

"You can't be serious right now." I whispered, noticing Alina grinning down at her ring and sitting like a queen.

"You're well aware that she doesn't have much time left on earth, right? So don't make this hard. Try to understand." He continued, then he walked off to the bar and returned with some papers which I assumed were divorce papers, holding them out to me, which I batted away with a wave of anger.

"You can't expect me to just up and leave my marriage because of my twin… my bitchy, egotistical twin! I'll never do that!" I yelled as the papers sprayed around us. I've been working on this marriage despite when it feels like it's about to fall apart, I've held it together, I've loved him enough for the both of us, anything to keep the marriage from falling apart. Then now I'm supposed to just up and leave because of my sister?

"My mind is made up." Heathen gruffed out, now glaring at me, but I ignored him and faced Alina.

"How could you make sure a request? Do you hate me that much?" My voice cracked a little.

Alina had an innocent expression that could undoubtedly deceive anyone but not me. She sniffed a little and made a show of coughing, which made Heathen rush to her side and massage her shoulder.

"I— I just want to be happy before I die, is that so bad to wish for?" She whispered before starting to sob, the same tears she has used to ruin every good thing I had in my entire life. I wonder how no one else could see right through her as I watched Heathen pull her into his chest, then he scowl at me.

"Enough, Seraphina. You're stressing her out!" He yelled at me, then shook his head when I attempted to speak.

"That's enough! And go grab your stuff, you can move into the other rooms for now, but vacate the masters bedroom, and stay out of sight because you know Alina doesn't like seeing you. Alina would be moving in here fully tonight." He announced, and somehow, that made me finally realize that he was dead serious.

After he picked Alina up and walked off into his study, I fell on the ground, feeling weak and out of breath. Tears filled up my eyes and this time, I couldn't stop them from falling this time.

After some minutes, I found the strength to stand, then I got dressed and drove off to my parents' mansion, and after meeting them, I lamented about all that just happened, hoping that for once they'd understand and be on my side. After I was done ranting, my mother sighed.

"Don't be selfish, Sera. Alina doesn't have much time left, so let her have this. After she's gone, you can return back to him."

I gaped at her, my head reeling, especially when my father nodded beside her.

"That's ridiculous, mom. You know that. Why do I have to sacrifice my marriage for her? Haven't I sacrificed enough?!" I cried out again, my voice breaking.

My mother got to her feet, face furious. "Why are you being so selfish again? Must everything be so difficult with you?! This is proof that you never loved your sister, else you'd willingly do this!" She cried out, glaring daggers at me and I reared back, feeling like I just got slapped.

"What?" I whispered as I got up as well, rage bubbling within me. "How could you say that? Everything I've done, you both made me give her credit. Every feat I achieved, the public thinks she's the one behind it. The success of the merged companies, I'm the one behind it, but who got all the credit? Who was publicly praised for reviving father's company and getting it out of debt? Alina!"

I was breathing hard, but I didn't stop. "I willingly remained behind the scenes when you both asked me to while saying I'll not be well received by the public because of my vitiligo. I wanted to be perfect for you two, so I did everything you asked of me without complaining. And yet I'm the one who doesn't care about Alina?" I yelled even louder, panting hard.

"You've never treated me well since Alina arrived in our lives. You've never loved me like you love her, and it's so unfair! Despite everything I do, it's just never enough!" My voice broke this time and a bitter, painful feeling settled within my chest.

My parents exchanged looks before pursing their lips. My father spoke next. "We tried our best to love you, child. We did try. This is the best our hearts could allow."

I let out a bitter scoff as those words washed over me, then I felt extremely stupid for the past years, for the amount of times I let my twin receive all my credits just to please my parents. How I let myself get walked over by them because I was so desperate to be accepted by them…

When I left my parents' house, my heart was heavy, but my mind was made up. I've already decided to accept the divorce, cause it was pointless and stupid to fight for a man that wasn't in love with me anyway.

However, when I arrived back home, all my things were waiting for me outside, and Heathen refused to let me past the door.

"You dared to report me to your parents? You think I didn't know you went there?" He barked out a laugh.

"Because of that, you'll leave with nothing. I was gonna let you leave with fifty percent of everything, but now I won't let you get away with anything!" He yelled and I flinched from shock.

"What? Are you stupid?" I yelled. "I'm ready to accept the divorce, I'm not that desperate to still keep resisting. But you'll not take all what I worked for just because! I worked for everything I own, and all that you now own! fifty percent of all our properties and a quarter of the VANDEN GAMING COMPANY, belongs to me. You can't decide to take them from me like I'm a fool." I gritted out, while Heathen laughed loudly.

"But you're a fool, Sera. A big one. Because first of all, your parents were aware of the engagement, they supported and encouraged it. Plus, did you seriously think they'd support you? They literally hate you! They're embarrassed of your existence and more than once, they've wished you were the sickly child while Alina, the genius." He laughed as he kept going and going, uncaring that my heart was shattering even more.

After that, all that happened was a blur, and I ended up getting thrown out, along with all my stuff. Despite all my demands for my share of all our properties, Heathen only laughed in my face, revealing a cruel side of him I never knew existed. He crassly revealed to me that he'll give all my properties and money to Alina instead, then the large gates got slammed in my face.

It was mortifying having everyone stare at me as they walked past and I quickly called a cab. In the cab, as I fought back frustrated tears, I opened my bank apps and gasped cause they were all empty. Heathen has clearly moved all my money out because he knew my passwords. I've never felt this helpless before, and I was presently at a loss of what to do right now.

In just a day, my life has completely turned upside down.

When my phone rang at that moment, it was my mother and I accepted it fast.

"I heard what just happened from Heathen. It's your fault. Perhaps this would teach you a little lesson." My mother parroted, shocking me further.

Do they hate me this much?

"But because we don't hate you like you might think, you're welcome to return back here, after signing the divorce papers, that is. We'll take you back, and you'll get to keep all your properties, but you'll keep working behind the scenes like you used to, and you'll also get married to one of the company's highest share holders. Do you accept?"

I let out a bitter scoff, anger swimming through my insides.

"No, thank you. I refuse." I gritted out harshly.

"Matter of fact, I'll go out there and reveal the truth to everyone that I'm the brains behind everything this whole time," I bit out angrily.

My mother swore sharply. "You wouldn't dare."

I laughed maniacally, my teeth rattling. "Watch me."

I ended the call after that.
