Knock! Knock! Knock!
Kai slammed his fist hard on the door three consecutive times, the sound echoing sharp in the upper hallway.
He paused, turned his ear to the door and the space on the other side, but heard nothing. He turned his head slightly, watching Lena walk toward the main entrance, her heels clicking on the marble floor.
"Jinx!" he called out in a low but heavy voice. He raised his fist and hammered it once more on the wood. "Time is running out."
Inside, Jinx lay on the bed, swimming in the deep waters of her dream. The hammering sound pierced through her dream like an annoyance.
She cracked her eyes open. The world blurred as the morning sun's rays shone on the pink room. She yawned heavily and pulled herself up onto her elbows.
The sheets pooled around her waist as she swung her legs over the side of the bed.
