Two days. Two days Ava had been floating just beyond reach, pulling me with her into a state of suspended animation. Now, her eyes were clear, bright, and focused, the grogginess finally receding like a fading tide. 

She was still weak, still subject to dizzy spells, and the bandages and cast were a stark reminder of the chaos, but she was entirely here.

​"My head is starting to hurt from the quiet," she announced this morning, her voice thin but decisive. "Tell me about the gala. Did the Chairman sue?"
