High above Thriller Bark—
A massive figure drifted through the sky.
Bartholomew Kuma.
His enormous body moved without wings, without propulsion—carried by an invisible force that bent the air itself. Clouds parted around him as if unwilling to obstruct his path. The wind howled, tugging at his coat, rushing past his ears with violent insistence.
Yet his face remained carved from stone.
No anger.
No satisfaction.
No doubt.
Only thought.
Inside his mind—
The scene replayed again and again.
Blood-soaked ground.
Two men still standing when they should not have been able to.
One with swords trembling in his grip, body shredded, refusing to kneel.
The other barely able to remain upright, lungs burning, legs shaking—yet stepping forward anyway.
Both offering the same thing.
Not excuses.
Not hesitation.
Their heads.
Their lives.
Their dreams.
For one boy lying unconscious behind them.
"…Extraordinary."
The word formed silently.
Kuma's eyes lowered, the faintest shift in focus betraying the storm within.
"Roronoa Zoro…"
"A man whose ambition reaches the summit of the world."
"To become the greatest swordsman."
"To surpass legends."
"To carve his name into history with steel."
Another image surfaced—Zoro standing firm, voice unshaken, declaring without hesitation.
Luffy is the man who will become King of the Pirates.
Kuma's mind moved to the second figure.
"Black Leg Sanji…"
"A man bound by pride, by principles, by his own quiet code."
"One who values freedom… and choice."
"One who shields others even while mocking himself."
Sanji stepping forward.
Not after.
Not reluctantly.
But immediately.
Both men.
Without coordination.
Without discussion.
The same decision.
Kuma's fingers curled slightly.
"Both of them possess overwhelming ambition."
"Dreams powerful enough to shape their lives."
"Dreams men normally die protecting."
A pause.
"…And yet."
"They chose to discard them."
"Without regret."
"Without bargaining."
"Without fear."
"…For their captain."
Kuma closed his eyes.
The wind roared louder for a moment, then faded into the background.
"This crew…"
"…is not bound by command."
"…Nor fear."
"…Nor profit."
"They follow because they choose to."
A faint, distant voice echoed in his thoughts—one he had not heard in many years.
Just what I expected…
…from your son, Dragon.
Ada.
Kuma's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.
"To inspire such loyalty…"
"To make men believe so deeply…"
"…That they would trade their own futures for his."
"To bear the weight of their dreams without ever demanding it."
His eyes opened, gazing into the endless dark ahead.
"You truly are your mother and father's child…"
"Monkey D. Luffy."
The clouds swallowed his silhouette.
The wind carried his unspoken thoughts away.
And Bartholomew Kuma vanished into the sky—
Leaving behind a crew that had no idea just how close they had come to losing everything.
————————
Back on Thriller Bark—
Lanterns swayed gently in the night breeze, their warm glow cutting through the thinning fog. Bonfires crackled across the courtyard, flames dancing as if celebrating alongside the pirates gathered around them.
Music echoed—off-key in places, loud everywhere—filled with laughter that felt almost unreal after the nightmare they had survived.
The Straw Hats mingled with Lola's crew, cups raised, shadows finally restored.
Life had returned.
For once—
Peace.
Zoro sat against a wooden crate near one of the fires, his torso wrapped tightly in thick bandages. His arms were crossed, posture rigid, as if daring his injuries to complain. Even sitting still, dried blood marked the wrappings around his chest and shoulders.
A few steps away, Sanji leaned against a stone pillar, arms folded, cigarette glowing faintly between his fingers. His suit jacket was gone, replaced by heavy bandages around his ribs and shoulder. Every exhale was slow and measured—controlled.
Chopper scurried back and forth between them, hooves tapping anxiously.
"Z-Zoro… your ribs are fractured in multiple places…!"
He flipped through his notes frantically.
"And you've got deep muscle trauma all over your back!"
Zoro didn't even look down. "…Hmph."
Chopper spun toward Sanji.
"Sanji! Internal bruising! Severe exhaustion! You shouldn't even be standing!"
Sanji exhaled smoke, unfazed. "Heh. I've cooked through worse."
Chopper stomped the ground. "THAT IS NOT A MEDICAL TERM!"
Usopp squinted at both of them, arms crossed. "Seriously… stop dodging the question."
He leaned forward. "What the hell happened to you two?"
Zoro stared into the fire, flames reflecting faintly in his one open eye. "…Nothing."
Usopp blinked. "…Nothing?"
Sanji shrugged. "Just fought a warlord."
Usopp's jaw dropped. "JUST?!"
He fell backward dramatically, landing flat on the ground. "WHY DOES EVERYONE IN THIS CREW TREAT WARLORDS LIKE SPEED BUMPS?!"
Robin, seated calmly near the fire with a cup of tea, spoke without looking up. "They just took some damage."
The mood shifted anyway.
Nami turned sharply. "…Damage?"
Robin lifted the teacup to her lips.
"…From fighting Kuma."
Silence.
Even though they already knew—
Hearing it said out loud still hit hard.
Nami's fingers curled slowly. "…That lunatic."
Chopper froze mid-step, hooves stiff.
"B-But Kuma is a Warlord…"
Usopp swallowed. "The kind that doesn't even look tired after fighting…"
Nami's jaw tightened. "…Idiots."
She turned away sharply, arms crossed.
"…Absolute idiots."
Chopper's ears drooped. "They shouldn't even be alive…"
Zoro glanced toward the fire, voice flat.
"…We are."
Sanji exhaled smoke, eyes half-lidded.
"Tch. Barely counts as a scratch."
Nami snapped back. "DON'T SAY THAT LIKE IT'S NORMAL!"
Usopp pointed at the bandages.
"YEAH! YOU'RE WRAPPED LIKE A MUMMY!"
Franky laughed. "Heh. Still standing though."
Robin watched them quietly.
Her expression softened—just a little.
"…That's all that happened."
Nothing more.
Franky laughed loudly, arms crossed over his chest.
"Heh."
"Sounds about right."
Zoro glanced sideways at him.
"Tch."
Franky grinned wider.
"They get that from their captain."
Luffy, sitting atop a mound of empty meat bones, threw his head back laughing.
"Shishishishishi!"
He slapped his knee.
"See?!"
"Zoro just needs some sake!"
He pointed at Sanji.
"And Sanji needs some women!"
"They'll be fine!"
Nami and Chopper screamed in perfect sync. "THAT'S NOT HOW MEDICINE WORKS!!!"
Luffy blinked.
"…Huh?"
Brook burst into laughter, clutching his ribs.
"Yohohohoho!"
"In that case, I too would like some women!"
Nami's fist flew.
THWACK.
Brook's skull spun halfway around.
"KEEP DREAMING, SKELETON!"
Brook straightened, bones rattling.
"Yohoho! Worth it!"
Sanji smirked faintly despite himself.
Zoro closed his eye.
"…This crew is loud."
Robin smiled softly, watching them all.
And for the first time in a long while—
Thriller Bark felt alive.
———————
Later—
The fire had burned lower, its crackle steady and calm.
Brook sat near the edge of the light, long legs folded neatly, hollow gaze fixed on the dancing flames.
For once, he wasn't laughing.
"…There is something," Brook said softly, "that I must tell you all."
The Straw Hats slowly turned toward him.
The noise died down.
Even Luffy stopped chewing.
Brook clasped his bony hands together, fingers interlocked.
"I once sailed the seas as a pirate," he continued, voice gentle, "with a crew called the Rumbar Pirates."
Luffy's head snapped up.
"Pirates?!"
Brook smiled faintly.
"Yes. A lively, foolish, wonderful crew."
He stared into the fire, as if seeing another time reflected there.
"We had a companion."
"A baby whale."
"His name… was Laboon."
The name hit the air like a dropped cup.
"…Laboon?" Nami whispered.
Usopp's eyes widened. "Wait—like the one at the entrance of the Grand Line?"
Robin straightened. "The whale at Twin Capes…"
"The one that kept smashing himself into the Red Line…"
Brook nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"I already told Robin and Franky about him."
He let out a quiet breath.
"But I wanted the whole crew to know."
Luffy suddenly shot to his feet.
"YEAH!"
"He's HUGE now!"
"He keeps ramming the wall over and over!"
"He said pirates promised to come back for him!"
Brook didn't freeze this time.
He closed his eyes.
His shoulders trembled anyway.
"…Still smashing his head."
"…Still waiting."
He lowered himself to his knees, hands resting against the ground—not collapsing, but grounding himself.
"Fifty years…"
"And he hasn't given up."
Tears streamed freely from his empty eye sockets, falling soundlessly into the dirt.
"Laboon…"
"I kept you waiting."
"I broke my promise."
"I wandered in darkness while you stayed where we said goodbye."
His fingers curled.
"But that ends now."
He lifted his skull, hollow eyes burning with resolve.
"I swear it."
"I swear it on my soul."
"I will see you again."
"I will return to you."
The fire crackled.
No one spoke.
The weight of that promise settled over the crew—
Not as sorrow.
But as something unbreakable.
Then—
Luffy grinned.
"Then come with us!"
Brook looked up sharply.
"…Eh?"
Luffy pointed at him.
"You're the pirate he's waiting for!"
"So let's go see him together!"
Brook blinked. "…You would… take me?"
Usopp leaned in. "Well yeah!"
Nami smiled softly. "It'd be cruel not to."
Sanji lit a cigarette, smirking. "A musician on board isn't bad either."
Brook's jaw quivered again.
"…May I…"
"…Join your crew?"
"Sure!" Luffy said instantly.
No hesitation.
The Straw Hats froze.
"…That fast?!" Usopp yelled.
"Captain, at least pretend to think!" Nami snapped.
Brook burst into laughter.
"Yohohohoho!"
He reached inside his coat and pulled out a folded, weathered paper.
"Ah—then allow me to properly introduce myself."
He unfolded it carefully.
A wanted poster.
"I am Dead Bones Brook."
"My bounty is thirty-three million Berries."
Gasps rippled through the group.
"I was once the leader of a certain kingdom's assault convoy."
"Later…"
"I became the acting captain of the Rumbar Pirates."
"I am a musician."
"And a swordsman."
He bowed deeply, spine bending with perfect form.
"As of today…"
"My life is in the hands of Captain Monkey D. Luffy."
"I will work myself to the bone—yohoho—"
"—to avoid tripping everyone up."
Sanji's eyes sparkled violently.
"A musician AND a swordsman?!"
"WELCOME ABOARD!"
Luffy raised a mug high.
"Alright!"
"LET'S DRINK!"
Cheers exploded into the night.
Laughter echoed across Thriller Bark—
And somewhere far away,
A whale kept waiting.
———————-
At dawn—
Pale sunlight spilled across the sea.
Fog thinned.
The nightmare of Thriller Bark finally loosened its grip.
The Thousand Sunny bobbed gently at the edge of the island, sails lowered, crew gathered on deck.
Lola stepped forward, holding a small, folded card between two fingers. "Hey, Nami."
Nami turned. "Hmm?"
Lola placed the card into her palm. "Take this."
Nami blinked. "…A Vivre Card?"
Lola nodded.
"My mother is in the New World."
"If you ever get into real trouble…"
"This will lead you to her."
Nami studied it carefully, then smiled.
"That's… really generous."
She tucked it away. "Thanks."
Lola grinned wide, showing her wide smile.
"Don't mention it!"
"Your captain saved all of us."
Luffy suddenly leaned in, eyes bright.
"Oh!"
"I've got one too!"
Everyone turned.
Luffy dug into his vest and pulled out a worn Vivre Card. "Ace gave me this!"
The crew crowded around.
Robin's eyes narrowed.
Usopp squinted.
Chopper tilted his head.
The edges of the card were slowly burning.
Curling inward.
Nami's smile vanished. "…That's not good."
She grabbed Luffy's wrist. "That's really not good."
Lola's expression changed instantly.
"…Who does that card belong to?"
Luffy answered without hesitation.
"My brother."
"Ace."
Lola swallowed hard.
"A Vivre Card reflects a person's life force…"
"If it's burning…"
Her voice lowered.
"…He's in serious danger."
A heavy silence fell over the deck.
The sea seemed quieter.
Luffy stared at the card.
Watched the flame eat away at the edge.
For a long moment—
He said nothing.
Then he smiled. "He'll be fine."
Everyone looked at him.
"He's stronger than me."
Usopp opened his mouth, then closed it.
Zoro spoke quietly from the railing.
"…If you want, we can detour."
Nami nodded immediately.
"Yeah."
"We can figure something out."
Chopper's voice trembled.
"We can help him!"
Luffy shook his head.
Slow.
Certain.
"Ace has his own journey."
He clenched the card, extinguishing the flame with his palm.
"And I trust him."
Robin watched him carefully.
Then nodded once.
"…That resolve suits you."
Luffy brightened instantly.
"So!"
"Where to next?"
Lola pointed ahead, toward the open sea.
"You're heading to Sabaody Archipelago."
Franky perked up. "Ooooh, sounds SUPER fancy."
Robin adjusted her sunglasses. "It's the final island of the first half of the Grand Line."
"The gateway to Fishman Island and the New World."
Brook laughed lightly. "Yohohoho! How thrilling!"
Sanji lit a cigarette. "So that's where the real monsters are, huh?"
Zoro smirked. "About time."
Luffy raised his fist high. "Then let's go!"
The Thousand Sunny's sails unfurled, catching the morning wind.
Thriller Bark faded into the distance.
A new crewmate stood on deck.
New dangers waited ahead.
And the world—
Was far from finished.
