Chapter 84: This… Is the Dual-Blade Feather Sheath Wings!
As night approached, the Miteer Auction Hall wasn't exactly packed wall to wall, but the flow of people was nonstop.
Three rare and desirable items were being auctioned tonight. How could that not stir excitement in the city?
Foundation Elixir, Dragon Flame Art, Dual-Blade Feather Sheath Wings—these three items practically appealed to everyone in Wutan City. Even those who couldn't afford them came just to watch. In particular, the Dual-Blade Feather Sheath Wings, said to let even Dou Zhes conquer the sky, attracted the attention of many who didn't care much about pills or techniques.
In one of the small private booths, Xiao Yan—disguised in his black cloak with help from the Miteer Chamber—stared nervously out the window at the crowd below.
"Teacher, there are so many people… I'm feeling a little nervous," Xiao Yan muttered to Yao Chen in his heart.
Deng! Deng! Deng!
The lights dimmed, and Dou Qi spotlights focused on the stage as Ya Fei, clad in a qipao with a stunning figure, stepped into the light and began the opening remarks of the auction.
"Now you're nervous?" Yao Chen's voice rang in Xiao Yan's mind. He, too, sensed that something felt slightly off—but couldn't pinpoint what.
"How could I not be nervous? I'm practically broke, and who knows how many people came here just for the flying Dou Device. If I can't afford it, won't I have to work it off for the Miteer Chamber?" Xiao Yan's nerves were clearly about his wallet.
Yao Chen: "..."
"Look at you. If you can't pay, you won't be working for the Miteer Chamber—you'll be working for Jiang Lin. He's the one consigning that thing to the auction."
"Working for Brother Lin?" Xiao Yan's eyes lit up. "Then can I call him whatever I want?"
Yao Chen raised a brow. If there weren't so many people, he might've popped out just to give Xiao Yan a hundred slaps.
"Are you trying to sell yourself?"
"I just haven't been able to find Brother Lin. I wanted to apologize for last time, but he hasn't shown up in Wutan City for months," Xiao Yan said, a bit wistfully.
Hearing that, Yao Chen's anger slowly subsided. Truthfully, Xiao Yan and Jiang Lin hadn't interacted much, but every time they did, Jiang Lin showed proper restraint. He never took what didn't belong to him, and he never acted recklessly.
He'd revealed the reason behind Xiao Yan's cultivation drop without mocking him. He observed quietly for three years without disturbing Xiao Yan. Even when he failed to snipe a bargain from a street vendor, he stuck to fair trade.
Jiang Lin liked to pick up hidden treasures—that was his talent. But if you blocked him, he would simply offer a fair deal in exchange.
It made Yao Chen shake his head. Had Jiang Lin been born into a major clan, he would have been the perfect gentleman—courteous, restrained, and understanding. But alas, born into a reclusive and erratic race, his temperament became one of intense focus, isolation, and odd bursts of genius.
"If you think that highly of Jiang Lin, you'll have plenty of chances to interact. Just… don't let his craziness infect you. Actually, you already seem a bit affected—I hope it doesn't get worse."
Truth be told, if Yao Chen weren't worried Jiang Lin's influence might throw off Xiao Yan's alchemy training, he'd have had no real complaints. At the very least, Jiang Lin was the most "human" one he'd seen from that ancient race.
There was once a branch of an ancient race famed for their physical strength—the least human of all. But next to Jiang Lin's people, even the Stone Clan started to look relatable.
Sometimes, Yao Chen even wondered if that ancient race would eventually destroy itself.
"Now presenting our seventh auction item, Tier Two Pill: Foundation Elixir!"
Ya Fei's charming voice snapped Yao Chen out of his thoughts. He and Xiao Yan both turned their full attention to the auction, which had started in a rather hurried and strange manner.
Ya Fei displayed the small jade bottle containing the Foundation Elixir, gave a brief introduction, and started the bidding.
With so many people present, the offers came one after another, and it sold at a price that surprised even Xiao Yan.
"Most people just came to watch. The Foundation Elixir is the only item many can afford. The next two—they're out of reach for most." Yao Chen's voice slowly echoed in Xiao Yan's mind.
Sure enough, after the Foundation Elixir, Ya Fei brought out several minor items in rapid succession, selling them quickly and at modest prices. Normally, she might drag out the process a bit, hint at the crowd to raise their bids. But right now, standing onstage and feeling the intense stares from dozens of Da Dou Shis—including several who had already signaled their impatience—she didn't dare delay. All she wanted was to get through the filler items as fast as possible.
This was Ya Fei's first time hosting an auction with nearly twenty Da Dou Shis in attendance. The pressure was immense.
'Just how appealing is that Dragon Flame Art? Last time wasn't anything like this...' she thought, stunned, even as she rushed through item descriptions.
Of course, under normal circumstances, a high-level Xuan technique would be more valuable than a Tier-One flying Dou Device.
But this was a Tier-One flying Dou Device forged by Blacksmith Young Lin himself!!!
In Wutan City, among the three great clans, the Mercenary Guild, and the Miteer Chamber, nearly all Dou Shis and Da Dou Shis knew this:
Blacksmith Young Lin was more productive than a sow in mating season.
Singlehandedly, he had equipped most of Wutan's Dou Shis and Da Dou Shis with high-quality Tier-One Dou Devices—and even some with Tier-Two.
So, except for the Xiao Clan, most Da Dou Shis had come specifically for the Dual-Blade Feather Sheath Wings. They wanted to see the design, its functions, and whether mass production was possible!
Finally, Ya Fei reached the second-to-last item—the one that was arguably even more anticipated than the finale.
"Next up, our penultimate treasure—crafted personally by Blacksmith Young Lin—his very first Tier-One flying Dou Device: the Dual-Blade Feather Sheath Wings!"
As soon as Ya Fei uttered the name, everyone's eyes widened and locked onto the stage, eager to witness the legendary flying Dou Device.
But then—
Silence.
No one appeared beside Ya Fei. Nothing was brought onto the stage.
Just as the crowd was about to erupt in confusion, a faint buzzing sound echoed from behind them. Everyone turned their heads.
And there, from the rear of the auction hall, they saw an old man—someone they recognized—gliding through the air. Behind him spread a pair of radiant red wings. Slowly, steadily, he flew above their heads and descended beside Ya Fei.
Thud!
As he landed, the Dual-Blade Feather Sheath Wings folded neatly on his back. Gu Ni, his face calm but inwardly thrilled, slowly turned to face the stunned and heated gazes of the crowd and said:
"Everyone… this… is the Dual-Blade Feather Sheath Wings."
The entire venue erupted into a frenzy.
He really flew!!!
