Chapter 22 - XXII

But anyway, you'll say, that was a lot of gangs and crime. I'd rather know what happened next on your vacation with Katya.

Well, not much, I'll tell you, we were just being chased by some cop cars. I was driving as fast as I could and sometimes I threw magic spells at them to shake them off. They were shooting at us too. Katya was in the passenger seat, her eyes were closed, and she was hugging some bags filled with cash.

I'd destroy one cop car and several more would arrive. It wasn't long before the SWAT team showed up, and they were a bunch of assholes who think they're so great 'cause they can use some lame magic. I didn't give a fuck about them, but the problem was that if this kept going they'd call in the local hero and his team, and they weren't gonna to let me escape with Katya that easily.

And I could beat the shit outta them, but if them captured Katya, all that power of friendship shit would go to the fucking drain, so I had to be extra careful.

Suddenly, the SWAT team hit one of the tires of the car we were in, so I was about to lose control, and the cops were catching up. Katya was clutching those bags tightly, and there was a gas station on the side of the road, so I swerved toward it to crash into it, and just before hitting it, I touched Katya, and we teleported as far away as I could. It was a street I didn't recognize. Several people stared at us for appearing out of nowhere.

And at that moment we heard an explosion far away.

"Let's go," I told Katya, 'cause sooner or later the SWAT team would realize that we didn't die in that explosion.

She opened her eyes.

"What happened? Where are the cops?"

"We teleported us away," I told her.

So that ungrateful piece of shit pushed me.

"Why you didn't do that sooner?"

"You're welcome, you fucking brat," I said, touching her shoulder, and we teleported somewhere else. I didn't teleport earlier 'cause it uses up a lot of magic, even if you don't go very far, and you could waste all your magic if you use it too much.

That's why I always use it as my last resort.

Anyway, we got some hotel rooms and got together to figure out what to do next. When I got to her room, she was on the bed with the bags. She was taking out bills and throwing them in the air.

"What? You've never seen that much money?" I asked her.

She approached me and made it rain.

"We always use credit cards," she told me and grabbed more bills. Then she came closer and pretended to slap me with them. "I'll buy you something nice so you'll finally get rid of all that shit. You're not in a funeral, you know."

She was talking about my trench coat, my shirt, my pants, all in black. At that moment I thought I looked pretty sick.

Cut to… we were at a clothing store, Katya picked out some things for me and told me to try them on. After a while, I came out of the fitting room wearing some brown pants, a white shirt, and sneakers.

I felt so fucking stupid with that.

"It's fine, for starters, but take that thing off." She grabbed the necklace I was wearing, and I grabbed her hand. "Do you really like it? It's so ugly."

I tapped her forehead with the tip of my finger.

"Ow," she said and dropped the necklace.

I took it off and stared at it for a few seconds.

It was Darius's necklace, the one he always wore, with the same golden skull I had seen since the day he found me in that abandoned building.

Anyway, I changed, Katya made me try on a ton of clothes, bought them all for me, and we left. I was almost sure the security guard was gonna stop us to check that we hadn't stolen anything, but no, he just looked at me and nodded.

We walked through the mall, and I kept looking around, almost sure that at any moment a cop, a security guard, or someone would recognize us. We had robbed a bank not long ago; the cops were definitely looking for us. Besides, I know what I look like, how my dark skin doesn't exactly inspire confidence in cops and security guards. I was sure they were watching me.

Out of nowhere, Katya went completely nuts, grabbed my eyepatch and tried to put it on my other eye. I grabbed her hand and pulled it off.

"What the fuck's wrong with you?" I asked.

"Stop creeping on girls, you perv."

"What girls? Fucking brat…" I looked around to make sure no one was watching us, but Katya grabbed my face and put it right in front of hers.

"Let's go to the movies instead, so you stop being a perv."

I looked around to make sure that no one was watching us, even though the security guard in front of us was watching me.

She noticed and approached him.

"He robbed a bank. Take him." That piece of shit told him.

"Shut up he's gonna believe you," I said, but that security guard just laughed.

"Let's go," she grabbed my arm and took me to the movies. She bought popcorn and a bunch of other shit, and we went inside. It was really dark, and I kept glancing at the entrance '0cause the cops were gonna show up at any minute. We'd already attracted a ton of attention, and the cops were looking for us.

I also saw the people there, but they were all watching the movie. They were laughing as if nothing was wrong with them, as if no one was looking for them or wanted to kill them.

I don't even remember how that feels.

But that's how it is with us criminals: if you get distracted for just one second, you end up dead.

Anyways, no cops showed up. We left there and she suddenly told me to wait, left and came back with two ice creams cones.

"Here," she told me and offered me one.

"Fuck off," I didn't grab the cone. "I'm not five anymore. And you're a little too old for that shit too."

She got a little mad about it.

"I'll throw it away then," she said and walked towards a bin.

"Don't throw away food," I told her. "Just 'cause you've never been poor, right?"

"I'm only throwing it away 'cause you don't want it."

I finally grabbed the cone. It was already melting, so I tried it. Would you believe me if I told you I'd never had ice cream before? You have no idea what I would have given as a kid for my dad to buy me one, but he didn't even want to buy me some fucking shoes. And even when I was earning some money with the clown, I never bought one 'cause there's no way to eat it without looking like a total dumbass.

Besides, ice cream's for kids, and if some clown saw me with one, he would probably make fun of me.

I tried to eat it really fast so no one would see me, but suddenly I had a headache.

Katya laughed.

"You have to eat it slow," she said.

And I started eating it like that, but that piece of shit grabbed my hand and moved it so all the ice cream ended up all over my face.

Katya laughed again.

"Wow. You really liked it, don't you?"

I tried to do the same to her, but she yelled like a little girl and ran away. Now the cops, the security guards, everyone was watching us, and if they didn't recognize me as the guy who robbed a bank, they probably saw me as some dumbass who can't even eat ice cream without getting it all over his fucking face.

So I wiped my face, finished my ice cream, and told Katya I wasn't going to do anything to her—I even raised my hands. She slowly approached me and kept her distance, but what she didn't know was that I didn't need to touch her to mess with her. So, when she was finishing her ice cream, I used a little magic to control her arm and suddenly moved it all over face. She ended up with her mouth all covered up in that shit.

But he just laughed and approached me to cover me too, and we struggled a little bit, and people watching us laughed and left.

After a while we left too. We were in the parking lot and while she was using an app to get a ride back to the hotel, I reached into my pocket to get my phone, but I found Darius's necklace.

I took it out and stared at it for a bit.

And I ended up throwing it away.

I didn't need anything from that asshole anymore.

Our ride came and we left. At that moment I sensed some very small auras, so I turned toward where they were and found some teens inside a car. They were parked in the middle of nowhere, and they were probably watching someone.

They weren't watching us, which was the only thing that mattered to me.

But seeing them like that brought back some memories.
