Chapter 4 - 03 - Thicker than Water

January 04, 2020. Saturday. 09:37 AM

Boni Serrano, Cubao, Quezon City, Philippines.

A weekend.

(The morning sun cast long shadows across the streets of Cubao, its light filtering through the gaps between buildings and painting the urban landscape in a warm, inviting glow.)

Sus: (internally) (looking at the sky) (headphone filters active) Hmm. This city really feels different after office hours.

(The air was still crisp with the remnants of the night's coolness, but the city was already awakening, its energy palpable in the growing hum of traffic and the distant chatter of vendors setting up their stalls.)

Commuter 1: (to Vendor 1) Ate, do you have green?

Vendor 1: (to Commuter 1) (a bit agitated) 10 Pesos

Commuter 1: (to Vendor 1) So expensive. Can I have one?

Vendor 1: (to Commuter 1) Then don't buy!

(Sus walked with a brisk pace, his mood attuned to the symphony of the city. He enjoyed the feeling of the pavement beneath his feet, the rhythm of his footsteps a steady beat against the backdrop of urban chaos.)

Sus: (internally) I wonder where I can smoke though. They're really cracking down on smokers lately. I don't want to get arrested. (joking) Hey, Suri, can we "sense" where smokers hang?

(He preferred the freedom of walking, the ability to observe and absorb the city's vibrant energy at his own pace. As he and Suri passed Boni Serrano Avenue, the scene shifted, the energy intensifying.)

Suri: (floating above Sus) Hmm. It's possible for us to listen to the streets and find clues about traces of smoking but it may require a lot of Sensitive Energy especially if there's no one doing the activity nearby.

Sus: (internally) (lightly laughing) Haha. Just kidding but thanks, Suri. This Sound Sensitivity's really more effective when movements are happening around us, hm?

Suri: (nodding) Correct! Sound Sensitivity's strength is with motions!

(Sus smiled, feeling alive to the symphony of urban life. This was his element, the chaotic beauty of the city a constant source of inspiration.)

Sus: (internally) Okay then, good thing I know where we're going. We don't have to use Sensitive Energy yet.

Suri: (eager) Oki! Where are we going?

(He navigated the bustling scene with a practiced ease, his senses heightened but under control, absorbing the vibrant energy of Cubao without letting it overwhelm him.)

Sus: (internally) A nice place…

(Rounding the final corner, Sus found himself facing Kevin's house, a haven of tranquility nestled amidst the urban bustle.)

Sus: (internally) Well. We're here. (sends a message to Kevin reading: "I'm here, Kev")

(The house itself exuded a warm, welcoming aura, its brightly painted facade and well-manicured lawn. A sturdy fence enclosed the property, providing a sense of security without feeling imposing.)

Sus: (internally) (fascinated) I always keep forgetting that there are residences around Crame.

(Despite its proximity to the imposing headquarters of the national police, the house felt strangely secluded, as if hidden in plain sight.)

Sus: (internally) C'mon, Kev. Where are you? (paused to think) Oh wait. Of course, they have a doorbell.

(Sus paused at the gate, admiring the harmonious blend of security and accessibility. The scent of recently watered plants and grass contrasting the smoke and dust of the city, mingling with the serene sound of birds playing in the yard, a perfect reflection of Kevin's personality.)

Sus: (pressing the doorbell's button) Even this looks expensive.

Ding

(The gate clicked open, and Sus stepped into the compound, his pulse quickening with anticipation. The house itself was a picture of suburban tranquility, a stark contrast to the bustling streets outside.)

Kevin: (calling out) Hey, bro!

(Sus followed the sound of Kevin's voice, rounding the side of the house to find him and his two sons in the backyard, Connie and Hammie sitting cross-legged on the grass before him.)

Sus: (to Kevin and sons) What's going on here?

Kevin: (grinning) Welcome to Sensitive Training!

Connie: (giggling) Daddy's teaching us how to breathe so we can use our powers!

Hammie: (eyes closed, concentrating) It's so hard I hate it!

Kevin: (to Hammie) Hey, we don't hate anything. You'll get there, buddy. Just keep practicing. (to Sus) Be there in a minute, bro. Just one more rep.

(Sus watched as Kevin guided his children through a series of breathing exercises, their small chests rising and falling in unison.)

Sus: (internally) Is this how they learn to control their abilities?

Suri: It seems like it.

(Tara, the wife of Kevin. emerged from the house, a tray with a steaming pot of coffee and three seemingly expensive hand-crafted cups with small leaves designed around them, balanced on it.)

Tara: (smiling) Welcome, Sus! I made sweet heart's favorite—Sagada roast.

Sus: (taking a cup) Thanks, Tara. You know I can't say no to coffee.

Tara: (pouring a cup for herself) Kevin's been obsessed with Sagada coffee ever since he discovered it at that Comic Book Convention you two went to. So you're one of us, huh? I'm so happy! Finally no secrets.

Sus: (chuckling) Figures, Tara. So this is why Kevin won't go out on weekends, huh?

Tara: (sitting down on a patio chair) It's essential for young Sensitives. They need to learn how to focus their energy before they can fully access their Sense-Cores. That. And of course church on Sundays.

Sus: (taking a sip of coffee) I'm still surprised I didn't know my Sensitivity until now.

Tara: (nodding) It's rare for a Sensitive's abilities to remain dormant for so long. We were all shocked when you tested positive.

Sus: (intrigued) So, like... what happens to newborn Sensitives? Do they just start using their abilities right away?

Tara: Oh, no. It's actually a very delicate matter. When a Sensitive is born, their parents are required to report them to the Council.

Sus: (internally) (amazed) Wow. This community's really organized, hm? Everyone's tracked.

Tara: (continues) The Council then installs a Nullifier, a personalized device that suppresses their Sensitivity until they're old enough to train.

Sus: (clarifying) So these "Nullifiers" are unique for each kid?

Tara: (adding) It's a safety measure, both for the child and for those around them.

Sus: And the test I went through, kids need to pass that before they uninstall the Nullifiers?

Kevin: (approaching Sus and Tara) Hey, you two! Having a coffee break without me?

Tara: (smiling) Just catching up with Sus.

Kevin: (to Sus) (smiling) Amazing roast, right? (Turns to Hammie, ruffling his hair) Don't forget, Hammie, focus is key. It's what allows us to connect with our Sense-Cores and avoid getting overloaded.

Sus: (nodding) That's what I'm still trying to understand. How do you guys manage to stay focused with all the noise and distractions?

Kevin: (grinning) It takes practice. But once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature.

Tara: (to Sus) Kevin's been a natural since he was a kid. He could focus on a single sound in a crowded room.

Kevin: (chuckles) It came in handy when I was courting Tara.

Tara: (playfully punches Kevin's arm) Oh, you were such a little sneak!

Kevin: (smiling) But a focused one.

Sus: (takes a sip of coffee) So, if you lose focus, what happens?

Kevin: (serious) It can be dangerous. You could get sensory overload, or worse, drain your Sensitive Energy completely.

Tara: (concerned) That's why we're so careful about using our abilities. We don't want to risk hurting ourselves or others.

Kevin: (nodding) Exactly. It's a delicate balance. But once you find it, you can do amazing things.

(Kevin puts his arm around Tara, pulling her close. She leans into him, a smile on her face.)

Kevin: (to Sus) You'll get there, Sus. We all will.

Ding

(Kevin glances at his watch, a knowing smile playing on his lips.)

Kevin: (to Tara and Sus) Ah, that must be Rachel. She's always late.

(The gate clicks open, and Rachel strides into the compound, her expression a mix of annoyance and determination.)

Rachel: (exasperated) You wouldn't believe the inquisition I just escaped.

Kevin: (amused) Let me guess, breakfast with the great Dr. Tito Tuazon?

Rachel: (sighs) The one and only. Apparently, pursuing a career in Marketing and Advertising is still considered a betrayal of my family's legacy.

Tara: (sympathetically) Oh, Rachel, I'm so sorry.

Rachel: (waving her hand dismissively) It's fine. I'm used to it. Anyway, enough about my family drama. They're all doctors, they can heal themselves (kidding). We have more important matters to attend to.

Kevin: (nodding) Indeed. Sus, Rachel's here to brief us on today's mission.

Sus: (curious) Copy. Like what Boss Maria said.

Rachel: (seemingly annoyed) But wait. Why's there only coffee here? You didn't use the tea I gave you, did you?

Kevin: (looking at Tara) Uhm…

Tara: (denying) Why are you looking at me?

Sus: (laughing) This is a special roast, Rach. You should try it.

Rachel: (sad) Only you and Kevin enjoy coffee this way. And these cups don't even look like they're for coffee you know!

Kevin: (smiling) Hey! They're my mom's!

Rachel: (smirking) Anyway! (serious) I found traces of some possible Sense-Stealers operating in the area. They're targeting more young Sensitives, and they seem to be increasing in numbers. We need to act fast.

Kevin: (grimly) Sounds like a job for us.

Rachel: (to Sus) You'll be shadowing Kevin today. He'll show you the ropes and teach you how to use your abilities in the field.

Sus: (eager) Got it. Let me know how this works.

Rachel: (explaining) Scent Sensitives like my family are usually in support roles. In this case, I'm the locator. I've been tracking these Sense-Stealers for the past few days, and I've finally got a lead on their whereabouts.

Sus: (internally) Wow. Even Rachel's really working hard here. So everyone's been living double-lives all this time?! (puzzled)

Rachel: (continues) Strong and skilled Scent Sensitives can even become Scent-Shifters, influencing or even attacking using scent concoctions. But that's a story for another time. Right now, we need to focus on stopping these criminals.

Kevin: (to Rachel and Sus) We were able to get some additional intel from the Sense-Stealer we apprehended the other night.

Rachel: (surprised) I was shocked he talked. I thought they were trained to resist Expand.

Kevin: (nodding) They are. But this one was... different. Younger, maybe. Less experienced.

Tara: (getting up) Well, this is where I leave you guys to your Sensitive Council stuff. I've never been a fan of all the cloak-and-dagger business.

Kevin: (pulling Tara in for a quick kiss) I know, honey. Thanks for the coffee. We'll be in for lunch soon.

Tara: (smiling) Don't take too long. And Sus, it's nice to know you're one of us now. Welcome.

(Tara exits)

Kevin: (to Sus and Rachel) Anyway, where were we? Ah, yes, the Sense-Stealer. It said that there's been a sudden influx of Sensitives in the district lately. They called it a "buffet," and said they were having a "feeding frenzy."

Sus: (internally) A feeding frenzy? That doesn't sound good.

Suri: (concerned) Indeed. It seems we've stumbled onto something rather serious, Sus.

Rachel: (frowning) That doesn't make sense. There aren't that many Sensitives in our district, and most of them are already in The Metro.

Kevin: (nodding in agreement) I know. It's strange. But we need to find out what's going on, and fast.

Sus: (to Rachel) So, what's up with these Sense-Stealers? Who are they, really?

Rachel: (grimly) Sense-Stealers are a group of unregistered and untrained Sensitives who use their abilities for their own agendas. They're a threat to both Sensitives and non-Sensitives alike.

Kevin: (adding) The Sensitive Council is still trying to figure out how they're able to drain Sensitive Energy from others. We don't know if it's through a device or some technique, but it's incredibly dangerous.

Rachel: Draining Sensitive Energy doesn't just weaken us, it affects our life force. It can distort our perception of reality, scramble our memories... in some cases, it can even be fatal.

Sus: (internally) (eyes widening) Fatal? I... I almost died back there in the alley, didn't I? And again with Marcus...

Suri: (somberly) It appears so, Sus. You've been through a lot these past two days.

(A wave of dizziness washes over Sus, and he grips the edge of the table for support. The reality of his situation hits him with full force - he's not just a regular guy anymore, he's a Sensitive, caught in a dangerous world he never knew existed.)

Kevin: (noticing Sus's distress) Hey, are you alright? You look a bit pale.

Sus: (forcing a smile) Yeah, I'm fine. Just a lot to take in, I guess.

Rachel: (placing a reassuring hand on Sus's shoulder) Don't worry, Sus. We'll get through this together. We're here for you. We're a family, remember? You're MY family. (smiles)

Kevin: (pointing to a map on the table) Alright, we have some clues where these Sense-Stealers are operating. Bro, can you check the what Rachel's put together? Let's try to anticipate their moves, understand their motivations.

Sus: (to Kevin) (curious) Wait… Can't we just use your sensitivity to find them? Like… "Detect" who's Sensitive or not?

Rachel: (sighs) I wish it was as easy as that, Sus. We need tools like the chamber to confirm if someone's a Sensitive.

Sus: (realizing something) I guess that's why you guys were so surprised about me.

Kevin: (grinning) Don't worry, bro. It's just like our usual work routine! Rachel and Marketing gather all the intel. You're the Analyst, sifting through the noise and finding the valuable information. And me in sales closes the deal.

Sus: (thinking aloud) Okay, let's work this. If I were a young, impatient Sense-Stealer looking for easy prey, where would I go?

Kevin: (intrigued) Go on...

Sus: I'd go where the young people hang out, Sensitive or Non-Sensitive. Schools, arcades, those kinds of places. I'd observe, I'd wait for the right moment to strike.

Rachel: (snapping her fingers) That's brilliant, Sus! We need to observe the observer.

Kevin: (pointing at Sus's headphones) Oh, and don't forget those noise-canceling headphones, Sus. You'll need them to stay focused.

Sus: (tapping his headphones) Don't worry, they're not coming off anytime soon.

Rachel: (to Sus) This is also where you can learn some focus exercises. You need to be able to block out all distractions and concentrate on the task at hand.

Sus: (curious) Oof. So Kevin and the others do this every day?

Rachel: (smiling) Quite. Part of the Enforcer role. So don't worry! You have THE pro with you, Sus! Just follow his lead.

Kevin: (clapping Sus on the shoulder) Alright, let's get to work. We've got some Sense-Stealers to catch.

Sus: (internally) Oof. Here we go. What did I get myself into?

(The air crackled with a mix of anticipation and affection as Kevin prepared to depart.)

Kevin: (gathering his things) Alright team, duty calls. Tara, honey, I'm off to save the world. Wish me luck!

Tara: (smiling warmly) Good luck, my love. Be careful out there. And remember, I'm making your favorite Kare Kare for lunch.

(Sus and Rachel exchange a knowing glance. )

Sus: (murmuring to Rachel) Your Kevin's really quite the family man.

Rachel: (nodding) He is. It's one of the things I admire most about him. Sound Sensitives usually get a good footing already on the community so they don't feel the pressure to prove anything.

Sus: (curious) So families usually have the same type of Sensitivity, huh?

Rachel: (staring at the family picture of the Chen Family) Yeah… My family, on the other hand... well, let's just say we're a bit more...competitive.

Kevin: (kissing Tara deeply) Mmm, can't wait. (He turns to his sons) Alright you two, be good for your mom. And don't forget your prayers.

Connie: (hugging Kevin tightly) Bye Daddy! Catch lots of bad guys!

Hammie: (high-fiving Kevin) I'll beat Connie in training!

Tara: (lovingly) Hammie, it's not a competition, okay?

(Kevin gives them both one last squeeze before turning to Sus and Rachel.)

Sus: (remembering a particularly intimidating encounter with Rachel's father) Yeah, your dad's pretty intense.

Suri: (with a hint of trepidation) Intense? Oh dear, I do hope he's not too frightening.

Rachel: (laughing) He can be a bit much sometimes. But he means well. He's just passionate about his work, like the rest of us.

Kevin: (checking his watch) Alright, enough chit-chat. Let's go catch some Sense-Stealers.

January 04, 2020. Saturday. 11:13 AM

5th Ave., Cubao, Quezon City, Philippines.

(A quiet street lined with parked cars and a low brick wall. Across the street stands a school, its gates closed for the weekend. Sus and Kevin lean against their car, observing the surroundings with a practiced ease.)

Sus: (scanning the area) So, Rachel said the son of a Sight Sensitive studies here?

Kevin: (nodding) That's right. He's got some extra classes on Saturdays. If our intel is correct, our Sense-Stealer might be lurking around here, waiting for an opportunity.

Sus: (adjusting his noise-canceling headphones) Makes sense. It's a good place to observe potential targets without drawing too much attention.

Kevin: (stretching) Well hopefully, this Sense-Stealer will slip up.

Sus: (adjusting his noise-canceling headphones) Do we just wait now?

Kevin: (eyes narrowed) Patience, brother. The sinners will show themselves soon enough.

(They settle into a watchful silence, their senses active. The street remains calm, but beneath the surface, a current of tension runs deep. Sus finds himself holding his breath, every nerve on high alert.)

Sus: (internally) This is it, I guess? I'm a part of this now.

Suri: (observant) Indeed, Sus. It seems this is your first real look in the field.

(A bead of sweat trickles down Sus's temple. He wipes it away, trying to maintain his composure.)

Sus: (internally) I can't believe I almost died twice already. And now I'm here, waiting for another potential killer to show up.

Suri: (soothingly) Don't worry, Sus. You have Kevin by your side, and you're more capable than you realize.

Kevin: (a grim smile playing on his lips) Okay, bro. Here's how you can help me. And learn too.

Sus: (tensing up) What do you need me to do?

Kevin: I need you to Extract.

Sus: (confused) Extract what?

Kevin: Memories. From the environment.

Sus: (eyes widening) Wait, you want me to... pluck memories out of thin air?

Kevin: (shaking his head) No, not exactly. It's more like... Talking to the world around you. Think of it like... (He pauses, searching for a suitable analogy.) Like hearing a song and suddenly being filled with the feelings and sensations you had when you first heard it in the past.

Sus: (still confused) What do you mean? I... I don't know how to do that.

Kevin: (explaining) Listen, there are three core Sense-Shifting skills: Extract, Explore, and Expand. Extract is collecting memories around you, like puzzle pieces. Explore is piecing what you found together. And Expand… Is the ability to create completely new things from the pieces you collected and your own.

(Kevin turns a knob and presses a button on the noise-cancelling headphones Sus is wearing.)

Sus: (eyes going sideways) …

Kevin: (calming down) It's still a very long way for you to be a Sense-Shifter. For now, you'll be assisting with Extraction techniques. Its fundamental Sensitivity. I adjusted your headphones so you can hear just enough frequencies to accumulate information.

Sus: (trying to process the information) Okay, so you want me to Extract memories from the environment so I can give you more information, right?

Kevin: Exactly. It'll give me a boost, I won't have to use too much energy like last time. It's like... (He pauses, searching for an analogy Sus will understand.)

Kevin: (continues) Imagine a library, bro. You're finding the right book, and then I come along with more energy to read rather than spending it both searching and reading. You getting me?

Sus: (hesitantly) Are you sure we have to do it now? I've never done this before. I don't even know how.

Kevin: (placing a hand on Sus's shoulder) Don't worry, bro. I'm here. Extract is basic. Even Class E's can master it. You got this! You just need to focus.

Sus: (eyes darting around) Focus? How can I even think straight with all this noise?

Kevin: (grinning) That's where this comes in.

(He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, his chest expanding.)

Sus: (watching Kevin, skeptical) What are you doing? Is this some kind of Sensitive yoga BS?

Kevin: (exhaling slowly) I'm teaching you how to breathe.

Sus: (scoffs) Breathing? Seriously? I've been breathing my whole life, Kev.

Kevin: (nodding patiently) Trust me, this is how you can focus. Close your eyes and follow my lead.

(Sus reluctantly closes his eyes, but his mind is still a whirlwind of thoughts and anxieties.)

Suri: (to Sus, voice strained) He's right, Sus. We can't work if we don't focus. Let's get energy!

Kevin: (in a calming voice) Inhale slowly through your nose, filling your lungs completely. Hold it for a moment, then exhale slowly through your mouth. Feel the air moving in and out of your body.

(Sus tries to follow Kevin's instructions, but even if he can't hear the city – the honking cars, the chattering pedestrians, the distant music – the vibrations and sights of everything around him keep invading his thoughts.)

Sus: (internally, his voice tight) This is useless. I can't block it out. Everything is distracting me!

Suri: (near panic) Oh no! Don't give up, Sus! You can do this!

Kevin: (sensing Sus's struggle) Focus on your breath, Sus. Let the rhythm calm your mind. Let go of everything else.

(Sus tries to concentrate, but his thoughts keep scattering like leaves in the wind. He feels a growing sense of frustration and panic.)

Sus: (internally, his voice rising) It's not working! I can't do it!

Suri: (desperately) Sus, you need to calm down! Remember the chamber? Remember how you focused then?

(Sus tries to recall the feeling of calm he experienced in the chamber, but it seems like a distant memory now. The noise and chaos of the city are overwhelming him.)

Kevin: (concerned) Sus, what's wrong?

Sus: (eyes snapping open) I can't focus! It's too much!

Kevin: (frowning) Okay, let's try something else. You should concentrate and pray, bro.

Suri: (desperately) Sus, you need to calm down! Remember how you tamed the faint voices?

(Sus's eyes widened in realization. He remembers the lollipop, the calm it brought, and then the memory of smoking at TxF, his escape, his moment of peace.)

Sus: (to Kevin) Give me a minute.

(Sus walks to a corner, pulls out a cigarette, and lights it. He takes a long drag, the smoke filling his lungs, a familiar comfort in the midst of chaos.)

Kevin: (concerned) Sus, what are you doing? You know that's not good for you.

Sus: (exhaling slowly, eyes closed) I know, I know. Just give me a minute.

Suri: (voice filled with worry and confusion) Sus, this isn't right! There has to be a better way!

(Sus ignores Suri's worries, focusing on the smoke, the feeling of it entering and leaving his body, the familiar ritual that has always brought him a sense of calm.)

Sus: (internally) this is my quiet corner, Suri. That place where everything else fades away.

(As the smoke fills his lungs, the noise and chaos around him begin to recede. Sus finds himself in that quiet corner, his mind still.)

Suri: (voice filled with awe) Sus... I... I can feel it! The energy... it's flowing!

(Sus opens his eyes, not with a confident smile, but with a sense of desperate relief. He can see Suri beside him, glowing brighter, its form shimmering with energy.)

Sus: (internally) It worked... I found it...

Kevin: (watching Sus with a mixture of concern and disbelief) Are you okay?

Sus: (internally) It worked... I found it...

Kevin: (watching Sus with a mixture of concern and understanding) I get it, Sus. Everyone has their own way of finding focus. But trust me, breathing exercises are still the best way to go. They're not dependent on anything external, and they're definitely healthier than smoking.

Sus: (taking another drag, his voice still quiet) I know, Kev. I know. But this is what works for me right now.

Kevin: (nodding) Okay, Sus. But please be careful.

Sus: (looking at Kevin, a hint of gratitude in his eyes) I will, Kev. Thanks.

Kevin: (placing a hand on Sus's shoulder) Okay, Sus. Now that you're focused, let's see if we can use that Sensitive Energy. Try to use your Sense-Core to find any information that might be useful to us. But be careful, bro. Don't push yourself too hard. You don't want to drain your energy completely.

Sus: (concentrating) Like what?

Kevin: Well, we're looking for a young Sense-Stealer, right? Someone who's probably trying to hide something. But their own senses might betray them. Think about what makes a person stand out. Their heartbeat, their breathing pattern... Those can reveal a lot about a person's emotional state.

Sus: (eyes widening) Right, if someone's up to no good, their heart might be racing, and their breathing might be shallow and fast?

Kevin: Exactly. Try to find those sounds, brother. See if you can pick up anything unusual.

(Sus closes his eyes and concentrates, letting his Sense-Core guide him. Suri floats around the different groups of kids hanging out near the school, its form shimmering with energy.)

Suri: (focusing on a group of teenagers laughing and joking near the entrance) Okay, Sus, let's see...

Sus: (internally) Their heartbeats are a bit fast, but that's probably just teenage jitters... their breathing is normal... nothing out of the ordinary here...

Student 1: (high energy) Heyooo. Check out this clip. It's so stupid.

Student 2: (laughing) That's so silly! Show me more!

(Suri moves on to another group, this time a couple sharing an ice cream cone.)

Student 3: This is your favorite flavor, right?

Student 4: I said cheese, not mango. Thank goodness you're cute!

Suri: (listening intently) Hmm... their heartbeats are definitely elevated... but again, nothing too unusual…

Sus: (internally) But that's probably just because they're with each other... their breathing is a bit shallow.

(Suri continues to scan the area, actively bouncing and floating left and right. But it's not easy. Teenagers are naturally a bit jittery, their hormones making their heartbeats and breathing a bit erratic. It's hard to tell what's normal and what's not.)

Suri: (frustrated) This is harder than we thought! Everyone's so nervous and excited! It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack!

(Sus starts to feel the strain of using his Sense-Core. His head begins to pound, and starts to feel dizzy.)

Kevin: (noticing Sus's discomfort) Sus, easy there. Don't overdo it. Remember, you're still new to this.

Sus: (taking a deep breath) I know, Kev. There's just too many hearts here.

Suri: (determined) I won't give up, Sus! I'll find that Sense-Stealer, even if it's the last thing I do!

Sus: (internally) Calm down, Suri. Jeez. We don't need to die everyday.

(Suri continues its search, its senses scanning the area for any sign of the Sense-Stealer. Finally, she spots something unusual.)

Suri: (noticing a lone figure sitting on a bench, their head down, their body shaking slightly) Wait a minute... this one... the heartbeat is erratic, their breathing is shallow and rapid…

Sus: (internally) This one may be trying to hide something.

(Suri turns to Sus, its voice filled with excitement.)

Suri: Sus, I think I found something!

(Suri, drawn by the erratic rhythm emanating from the lone figure, surrounds the figure like a gentle, pulsating aura. Sus sees a faint, warm glow enveloping the figure, a soft light that seems to emanate from within.)

Sus: (internal) Looks like we got it.

(The lone figure is a young teenage boy, perhaps fourteen or fifteen, wearing an oversized shirt and pants, his eyes glued to the phone in his hand. He sits hunched on a bench, his body radiating nervous energy.)

Suri: (to the Lone Figure's Heart) (its voice a mix of childlike curiosity and nervous excitement) Psst... hey, little heart! What's with the drum solo? You're beating like a hummingbird's wings!

(Lone Figure's Heart, startled by the unexpected voice, jumps and flutters erratically.)

Lone Figure's Heart: We're nervous… We're anxious…

Suri: (its voice a reassuring whisper, tinged with a hint of nervousness) Shhh... easy there, little buddy. It's okay, I'm just curious. What's got you so jumpy?

Lone Figure's Heart: We are… Afraid…

Suri: (its energy swirling around the Lone Figure's Heart) It seems like it! You're practically shouting. We heard you all the way out there.

Lone Figure's Heart: It's… We are really scared!

Suri: (its voice filled with empathy and a touch of anxiety) Ooh, that sounds tough. Would you know why you're afraid?

(Lone Figure's Heart, drawn in by Suri's genuine concern and playful energy, begins to confide its secrets, its rhythm revealing a clandestine meeting, a risky task, and the overwhelming fear of failure.)

Sus: (internally) Wow are those…?

(As the heart speaks, Sus notices tiny, shimmering particles rising from the boy's chest and swirling towards Suri. With each particle absorbed, Suri's glow intensifies, its form becoming more defined.)

Suri: (pausing, its voice a mix of concern and determination) Okay, little buddy, we're gonna need more. Your anxiety seems different from the other kids here.

(The Lone Figure's Heart stumbles, a skipped beat betraying its fear and uncertainty.)

Lone Figure's Heart: We don't want to be hurt anymore! We don't want to be hurt!

Suri: (its voice gentle but firm) Your nervousness sounds like you're afraid of losing more than the teenager things. You sound like you have higher stakes.

(Lone Figure's Heart's rhythm wavers, torn between fear and a flicker of hope.)

Suri: It seems like this is our guy, Sus!

Sus: (internally) (his mind buzzing with a mix of awe and anxiety) This is incredible... We're actually talking to his heart... and absorbing his memories... So this is Extract... connecting with the world on a whole new level...

(He watches, captivated by the interplay of light and shadow around the boy, the subtle shifts in the glow emanating from Suri, and the flow of shimmering particles. Realizing it is only him and Suri who experiences this at that very moment.)

Sus: (pointing towards the lone figure, his voice raspy with exhaustion) It's him, Kev. The kid on the bench. His heartbeat is different.

Kevin: (placing a hand on Sus's shoulder, his voice filled with gratitude and concern) Thanks, bro. I can confirm that. Rest a bit. That Extract technique can take a lot out of you, especially for a first-timer.

Sus: (leaning against the car, his breath coming in ragged gasps) Yeah, I feel like I just ran.

Kevin: (nodding) It's all about efficiency, brother. Learning to use your Sense-Core without overexerting yourself.

Sus: (internally) So that's why we need to focus on mining Sensitive Energy first. Maybe that's why these Sense-Stealers do what they do.

Kevin: (continuing) But don't worry, you'll get there. Practice makes perfect. And hey, for a first attempt, that was impressive. Boss Maria made the right call sending you out here with me.

Sus: (managing a weak smile) Thanks, Kev.

Suri: We did good! We did good!

Kevin: (turning his attention to the lone figure, his eyes narrowing) Now, let's see what we're dealing with. (winks to Sus) Let's make this quick. We have Tara's Kare Kare waiting for us at home.

(Kevin closes his eyes, his ears seemingly locking in on the lone figure's sounds. He stands motionless for a moment, his face etched with concentration. He touches the crucifix pendant he has hanging on his pocket and motioned the sign of the cross. Then, he takes a deep breath and whispers.)

Kevin: Sense Expansion: Serene Serenade!

Sus: (internally) (confused) Did he just announce his… technique?

(Kevin begins to whistle, a haunting, ethereal melody that seems to weave its way through the air. Sus and Suri exchange bewildered glances, their ears straining to hear the sound, but they can't hear a thing.)

Sus: (internally) (his mind reeling) What the... I can't hear anything. Is he even whistling?

Suri: (its voice a mix of curiosity and concern) This is extraordinary, Sus. Kevin's sound waves are specifically targeted at the boy's Sense-Core. It's a high-level technique, even among Sound Sensitives.

Sus: (internally, his eyes widening) So, what's going to happen?

Suri: (its voice filled with anticipation) We're about to find out.

(A tense silence hung in the air as everyone watched the lone figure. Suddenly, the boy gasped, his eyes in alarm as he crumpled to his knees, his right hand raised in surrender.)

Kevin: (a smirk playing on his lips) Looks like my aim's getting better. More precise than the other day.

Sus: (eyes wide with amazement) Whoa… (internally) Damn, Kevin's good. That Serene Serenade... He could practically win any fight without even laying a finger on anyone. Imagine how bloodless the world can be with this.

(Kevin swiftly crossed the street, approaching the boy with practiced ease. He placed a hand on the boy's shoulder, his touch gentle but firm, guiding him towards the car. To any onlookers, it would appear as if a concerned parent was simply escorting their child.)

Kevin: (once they were back in the car, explaining to Sus) Thanks to the Lord, my Serene Serenade disrupts their Sense-Core, finds ways to calm them down, makes them more susceptible to suggestion. Remember that hooded figure the other day?

Sus: Yeah. I was gonna say.

Kevin: (continuing) I had to use a lot of energy just to locate him, let alone hit him with the right frequencies. But today, with your Extract, I had way more energy to figure out the exact notes to match this kid's brainwaves. It's like... composing a personalized lullaby to soothe their senses.

Sus: (impressed) Wow so I was pretty useful, huh? But hey, did you really need to announce your technique like that?

Kevin: (grinning) Nah, not really. But it sounds cool, right? "Sense Expansion: Serene Serenade!" I just love saying it.

Sus: (shaking his head with a wry smile) Oh boy. Are we in a Manga series now?

Suri: (its voice buzzing with excitement) That was awesome, right? I hope I did well for you, Sus!

Kevin: (grinning) Now, we just wait for Marcus to pick up our little runaway Sense-Stealer here and bring him back to the Council. Should give us some time for a proper lunch. Speaking of which...

(He pulls out his phone and dials a number.)

Kevin: Hey, darling! We just finished up. Yeah, it was a piece of cake thanks to Sus here. You'll never guess what he did...

(He launches into an excited retelling of the morning's events, his voice filled with affection and pride.)

Sus: (watching Kevin, a warm feeling spreading through him) (internally) He's so different when he's talking to Tara... All that serious, focused energy just melts away, and he's just... happy.

(He glances at the unconscious boy in the back seat.)

Sus: (internally) It's kinda weird, though. One minute he's taking down Sense-Stealers with his sonic powers, and the next he's all lovey-dovey with his wife. And he's such a great dad to those kids. Guess that's Kevin for you. The ultimate family man.

Kevin: (hanging up the phone, a broad smile on his face) Tara sends her love. She's excited to see you again, Sus. Can't wait for Kare Kare.

Sus: (smiling) Same. Really, man. Thanks for having me. I couldn't have handled this without you.

Kevin: (his voice taking on a more serious tone) You know, bro, family's the most important thing in the world. I wouldn't miss any chance I get to be with them. They're the main reason I do this enforcer thing. To keep them safe. And you are a part of that. You're family.

Sus: (nodding) I have no words, Kev. Thank you.

Kevin: Now what's taking Marcus so long. I want to see my kids now.

(A bright red car, almost a blur of color against the muted tones of the city, screeched to a halt beside them. Marcus emerged, his expression a mix of suspicion and annoyance.)

Marcus: (glancing at Sus) What's he doing here?

Sus: (shifting uncomfortably) Uh... Hi, Marcus.

Kevin: (grinning) Easy, Marcus. Sus is my assistant for the day. He did good work.

Marcus: (scoffing) Him? You're kidding, right? Don't tell me you've got yourself saddled with Magno. Hope he's not slowing you down too much.

Sus: (internally) Okay, that's just rude.

Kevin: (chuckling) Nah, Sus is alright. He's got a good head on his shoulders. We made a good combo just a while ago!

Marcus: (grumbling) Fine. Whatever. Just hand over the kid.

(Kevin carefully passed the unconscious boy to Marcus, who secured him in the back of his car.)

Kevin: He's all yours for interrogation.

(Just as Marcus was about to leave, Kevin's phone rang. It was Rachel.)

Kevin: (answering the phone) Hey, Rach. What's up?

Rachel: (her voice urgent) Kevin, I just realized that some schools with Sensitive children are letting out early today within District 4. We need to keep an eye on things. There's a heightened risk with more potential targets on the streets.

Kevin: (his face falling) Damn it. I was really looking forward to Kare Kare.

Marcus: (overhearing the conversation) I can handle one location. You two take the other two. (smirking)

Kevin: (forcing a smile) Thanks, Marcus. We appreciate it.

Marcus: (rolling his eyes) Don't let Magno distract you. (He got back in his car and sped off.)

(Kevin quickly typed out a message to Tara, his fingers lingering on the screen as he hesitated before sending. He hit send, overcome with sadness.)

Kevin: (to Sus) Alright, brother. Let's go. We've got more work to do. Don't worry. I'm good at this.

(The city unfurled before them, a vast tapestry woven with threads of fear, excitement, and hidden intentions.)

Sus: (internally) Okay let's focus.

(With a practiced flick of his wrist, Sus lit a cigarette, the smoke coiling around him like a wisp of thought as he closed his eyes and focused on the whispers of Suri.)

Suri: Let's go!

(He felt the city's pulse quicken, a symphony of energy that both fascinated and overwhelmed him. And within that symphony, he found them – the Sense-Stealers, their heartbeats like frantic drumbeats against the steady rhythm of life.)

Suri: (its voice a mix of excitement and anticipation) There! By the fountain! A young girl, her heart pounding! I can almost taste her memories already!

(Sus and Kevin exchanged a determined look and swiftly moved towards the fountain, their senses heightened, their steps purposeful.)

Sus: (internally) I think I'm getting the hang of this. Especially with Kevin right here with me.

(He focused his energy, Suri amplifying his senses, guiding him towards the source of the frantic heartbeat. He felt dizzy again, a side effect of tapping into the raw emotions of others, but he pushed through it, his resolve strengthened by the knowledge that he was helping his friend.)

Kevin: (standing a few feet away from the girl, his voice a low, resonant whistle) Sense Expansion: Serene Serenade!

(The sound, a symphony of calming notes, enveloped the girl, her struggles ceasing as she collapsed onto the edge of the fountain, unconscious.)

Sus: (exhaling a shaky breath) Another one down.

Kevin: (smiling to Sus) Next? (winks)

(They moved on to the next location, a crowded marketplace where a young boy, his eyes wide with terror, was desperately trying to disappear into the throng of people.)

Suri: (its voice urgent) He's getting away! Sus, focus!

(Sus, his senses sharpened by the adrenaline surging through his veins, locked onto the boy's erratic heartbeat. Kevin, with a subtle shift in his posture and a focused whistle, sent a wave of calming sound towards the boy, who stumbled and fell, unconscious.)

Kevin: Gotcha!

(The third location was a schoolyard, Sus identifies a teenage girl, her heart seemingly intending on running, she's already aware of Marcus and his bright red car.)

Kevin: (whispering to Sus) Let's go, bro!

Marcus: (grunting with effort) I didn't call you two!

(Kevin and Sus approached the scene, their movements fluid and synchronized, their teamwork a testament to their growing bond.)

Kevin: (his voice a calming presence amidst the chaos) We've got you covered, Marcus.

Sus: (internally) Take that, jerk.

(Sus, his vision blurring with exhaustion, focused his remaining energy, Suri finding the location of the target. A soothing sound emitted from Kevin, washing over the girl, her resistance crumbles. She fell to the ground, unconscious.)

Marcus: (glaring at them) Show-offs.

Kevin: (grinning) Hey, this isn't a competition, Marcus.

Sus: (leaning against a nearby wall, his body trembling with fatigue) (internally) Three down... This is... way more draining than I thought it would be.

Suri: (its voice filled with pride, though its glow flickers slightly) We were awesome, Sus! We make a great team!

Sus: (smiling wearily) Yeah... we do.

(Exhaustion washed over Sus, blurring his vision and making him stumble slightly. He leaned heavily against Kevin, his body trembling with fatigue.)

Sus: (internally) Oh boy. I guess I'll have to workout more often now.

Kevin: (slinging an arm around Sus's shoulders, his voice filled with pride and concern) Easy there, brother. You did good. Real good.

Sus: (grinning wearily) Thanks, Kev. I couldn't have done it without you.

(Marcus swiftly secures the unconscious Sense-Stealer in the back of his car, his movements efficient and practiced. He slams the trunk shut with a satisfied smirk, then turns to face Kevin and Sus, his expression a mix of annoyance and professional pride.)

Marcus: Honestly, you two. I had that situation completely under control.

(Sus and Kevin, ignoring Marcus's grumbling, take a moment to survey their surroundings. The school, a modest collection of buildings nestled amongst a maze of quiet residential streets, seems strangely isolated.)

Sus: This is kind of a creepy place for a school, don't you think? All tucked away like this.

Kevin: Yeah, it's definitely not your typical school setting. You'd think with all the dangers out there, they'd want to be somewhere a bit more... accessible.

Sus: And I thought all Sensitives were rich. This place seems pretty average.

Kevin: Nah, Sensitives are just like everyone else. We come from all walks of life. Some are rich, some are poor, some are somewhere in between. Just like regular people.

Sus: Still, you gotta wonder what goes on in a school like this when no one's around. Seems like the perfect place for some serious mischief.

Kevin: Well, it's Saturday, half-day. Most of the kids have probably already gone home. Good thing we caught the Sense-Stealer.

Sus: Yeah, good point.

(Sus stretches, his muscles aching from the earlier exertions. Kevin leans back against the car, his eyes closed.)

Kevin: We can rest for a bit. Just stay on alert. I think we can still make it to Tara.

(He's about to make a lighthearted comment about Marcus's dramatics when a strange, piercing sound cuts through the air. It's high-pitched, almost electric, like nails scraping against a chalkboard. It seems to vibrate through their very bones, setting their teeth on edge.)

Sus: What the hell is that?

(Kevin's eyes snap open, his face etched with concern. He scans the area, his senses alert.)

Kevin: I don't know. But it doesn't sound good.

(The sound intensifies, growing louder and more insistent. It's accompanied by a strange pressure in the air, a feeling of unease that prickles their skin.)

Suri: (its voice a mix of alarm and confusion) Sus, I don't like this. Something's wrong.

(Sus, his heart pounding in his chest, grips Suri tightly. He looks around, his eyes wide with apprehension. The once calm scene is now charged with tension, the air thick with a sense of impending danger.)

Sus: What do we do?

(Kevin, his face grim, straightens up, his senses scanning the environment for any sign of threat.)

Kevin: Stay alert. Something's coming.

(Marcus, with a practiced flourish, emerges from his car, his expression a mix of determination and arrogance.)

Marcus: Alright, you two, stay back. I got this.

(He puffs out his chest, striking a heroic pose.)

Marcus: Years of training and finely-tuned senses have prepared me for situations like this. Just watch and learn, Magno.

Sus: (internally) Wow. This guy. Can I just punch him?

(He closes his eyes, attempting to focus his Sound Sensitivity and pinpoint the source of the unsettling noise. He takes a deep breath)

Kevin: No wait, Marcus! Don't focus!

(But before he can fully concentrate, the piercing sound intensifies, overwhelming his senses like a sonic shockwave.)

Marcus: AGGGGHH!

(Marcus's eyes fly open, his body contorting in a grotesque dance of pain. He screams, a guttural cry that tears from his throat. He clutches at his ears, his fingers digging into the sides of his head as if trying to silence the unbearable noise.)

Sus: (eyes widening in horror) Marcus!

Kevin: (rushing towards Marcus, his voice filled with concern) We're not alone.

(Marcus collapses to the ground, his body writhing in agony. His screams echo through the deserted streets, a terrifying symphony of pain and suffering.)

Suri: (its voice trembling with fear) Sus, danger! We need to go!

(Marcus's body convulsed violently, as if an unseen force were tearing him apart from the inside. His cries of pain echoed through the empty schoolyard, a chilling symphony of suffering.)

Sus: (eyes fixed on Marcus, his voice hushed with concern) This is bad. Really bad. No one's even here to help us.

(They cautiously approached Marcus, their footsteps silent on the thick layer of fallen leaves.)

Kevin: (his brow furrowed in concentration) Someone's out there. A Sound-Shifter.

(Suddenly, Kevin's eyes flared with alarm. He clapped his hands over his ears, his face contorted in pain.)

Kevin: Incoming!

(With lightning reflexes, he reached out and adjusted a knob on Sus's headphones, amplifying the noise cancellation to its maximum level. Just as he did so, the piercing sound returned, a wave of sonic energy that seemed to warp the very air around them.)

Sus: Kevin!

(Sus felt a tremor run through him, a strange pressure against his eardrums, but he couldn't hear the sound itself. The world around him was utterly silent, a disconcerting void where once there had been the symphony of the city.)

Sus: (internally) What the…

(Kevin, despite his quick thinking, was not entirely unscathed. He staggered back, his face pale, his hands still clamped tightly over his ears. But he was alive. On the other hand, Marcus now lay motionless on the ground, unconscious.)

Sus: (his voice a panicked whisper in the silence) Kevin? Are you okay?

(Sus couldn't hear Kevin's response, the world around him a vacuum of sound. He could only see Kevin's lips moving, his words lost in the oppressive silence.)

Kevin: (his voice muffled and distorted by his hands, but his eyes filled with a grim understanding) I'm good, brother. Stay back.

Sus: (turning to Suri, his voice a silent plea for answers) Suri, can you hear Kevin? Can you hear anything?

Suri: (its voice weak and faint, barely a whisper in the silence) I... I can barely hear anything, Sus. Your energy is so low... I can't even collect memories properly...

(Sus fumbled with the toggle on his headphones, the world a frustrating jumble of muffled noises and distorted whispers.)

Sus: (internally) Shit. I can't help Kevin like this.

(He desperately twisted and turned the knob, trying to find the sweet spot, until finally, a voice cut through the distorted soundscape.)

White Shirt Unknown: (his voice smooth and confident, laced with a hint of cruel amusement) Too easy. Loudmouth never stood a chance.

(A young man, around Kevin's age, strolled casually through one of the school gates. He was dressed in a plain white shirt tucked into faded jeans, his hair slicked back with an almost excessive amount of wax. His features were sharp and defined, his eyes cold and calculating.)

White Shirt Unknown: (stepping over the unconscious Marcus, his gaze fixed on Kevin) Now, where were we? Ah, yes. Time to take care of the main event.

(Kevin, his face pale but resolute, slowly rose to his feet, his hands still hovering protectively over his ears.)

Kevin: (his voice strained) You... You planned this... You knew we'd come...

White Shirt Unknown: (grinning) Of course, we did. We knew you'd be drawn in by those petty distractions. We knew you'd exhaust yourself playing hero. And now... now you're vulnerable. Weak.

(He cracked his knuckles, a predatory gleam in his eyes.)

White Shirt Unknown: Taking down the Enforcer's top player... It'll be quite the feather in my cap.

(Kevin, his face etched with determination, stood his ground, his eyes locked on the White Shirt Unknown.)

Sus: (urgently, his voice a mix of fear and frustration) Kevin, we're exhausted, We have to run!

Kevin: (his voice calm but firm) I'm not leaving Marcus and we can't let this hurt anyone else.

(The White Shirt Unknown smirked, raising a small, intricately crafted device. It was a metallic box with a speaker grille, several dials, and buttons.)

White Shirt Unknown: Brave words for someone who's already lost. Any last words before I take you down?

Kevin: (his eyes narrowing) Save your breath. You're going to need it.

(Kevin turned his head slightly towards Sus, his voice low and urgent.)

Kevin: Sus, that device he's holding... It's called an Expansion Amplifier. It allows him to do his Expand Technique. He's using it to generate those sonic attacks.

Sus: (internally) (his mind racing) So that's his method... Like... his weapon. His Expand technique is like Kev's Serene Serenade except… hurtful.

Kevin: (explaining quickly) He needs to Extract to match our frequencies. That's how he was able to target Marcus so precisely. We need to stop him before he can pinpoint and take us out.

(The White Shirt Unknown stood a good ten paces away from Kevin and Sus, a distance that suddenly felt impossibly vast. The air crackled with tension, each second a countdown to potential disaster.)

Sus: (internally, his anxiety soaring) He's too far away! How can I help, Kevin?

(Kevin, his eyes fixed on the White Shirt Unknown, feeling Sus's fear. He watched his opponent intently, his senses hyper-alert for any sign of an impending attack.)

Kevin: (firmly) Stay where you are. You're my responsibility. (touches his crucifix pendant)

(The White Shirt Unknown inhaled deeply, his chest expanding as he focused his senses, attempting to Extract molecular memories, to find their unique frequencies. Kevin knew he couldn't let that happen.)

Kevin: (his eyes snapping shut, his voice a low whisper) Self Expansion: Serene Speed.

(A low whistle escaped his lips, and in a blur of motion, he was across the gap. One moment he was ten paces away, the next he was almost in front of the White Shirt Unknown, his hand shooting out to grab the Expansion Amplifier.)

Sus: (his jaw dropping in astonishment) Whoa! That's fast!

(The White Shirt Unknown, caught completely off guard, stumbled back, his eyes wide with surprise. He recovered quickly, though, his free hand whipping out to block Kevin's attack.)

White Shirt Unknown: (surprised but still smug) You really are the strongest.

(They clashed, their movements a whirlwind of fists and feet. Kevin, despite his exhaustion, fought with a ferocious intensity, his years of training evident in every strike and counter. His opponent, though seemingly less experienced, was no pushover. They matched blow for blow, movements fluid and agile.)

Sus: (internally) (his mind buzzing with a mix of awe and fear) Of course Kevin knows martial arts!

(The battle raged on, the two Sensitives locked in a desperate struggle for control. Kevin, his eyes blazing with determination, pressed his attack, his fists finding their mark with increasing frequency. The White Shirt Unknown, his face contorted with effort, fought back with everything he had, but he was slowly being overwhelmed.)

Sus: (internally) I know now. (realizing) I should try to help. (finds his pack of cigarettes)

(Meanwhile, Kevin, his eyes locked on his opponent, his skills honed by experience, saw an opening. With a swift maneuver, he tripped the White Shirt Unknown, sending him stumbling backward.)

Kevin: (his voice a low growl) Now!

(He inhaled deeply, gathering his remaining strength, and shouted a single, powerful phrase.)

Kevin: Self Expansion: Serene Strength!

(A surge of energy coursed through him, amplifying his physical abilities to superhuman levels. He launched himself forward, his fist cocked back, his eyes blazing with determination.)

White Shirt Unknown: Oh no you don't!

(The White Shirt Unknown, caught off guard, barely had time to raise his arms in defense. Kevin's fist connected with his defenses, a thunderous impact that reverberated through the air.)

Sus: (his jaw dropping in astonishment) What is that?

(The White Shirt Unknown's arms buckled under the force of the blow, his own fists slamming into his face. He staggered back, his eyes wide with shock and pain.)

Suri: (explaining) It seems like Kevin is able to activate memories within him that grants additional traits like speed and strength, Sus.

(The White Shirt Unknown collapsed to the ground, his body limp, his eyes closed. Kevin, his chest heaving, his face beaded with sweat, stood over him, his fists still clenched.)

Kevin: (to Sus) (a tired but genuine smile breaking across his sweat-streaked face.) You okay, bro?

Sus: (nodding, still a bit awestruck by Kevin's display of power) Yeah, I'm alright. You?

Kevin: (wincing slightly as he touched a bruise forming on his jaw) Could be better, but I'll live. Listen, I need you to do something for me.

Sus: Anything.

Kevin: Take Marcus to the car and secure him. I'll deal with... this one. (He gestures towards the unconscious White Shirt Unknown.)

Sus: Got it.

Kevin: And brother... (He hesitates, his expression turning serious.) Find something we can use to cover his eyes, his ears, and his mouth. And bind his hands.

Sus: What do you mean?

Kevin: He's... well, It's not like them to attack so directly, especially in broad daylight. And that "buffet" comment... it still doesn't make any sense. There's something bigger going on here, Sus. Something we don't understand yet.

(Sus could see the toll the fight had taken on Kevin. There were tear streaks through the dust on his cheeks, his knuckles were scraped and bloody, and a dark bruise was blooming under his left eye. But despite the physical evidence of the battle, Kevin's spirit remained unbroken. He stood tall, his eyes clear and focused, his voice steady.)

Sus: You were amazing, Kev. I don't know what I would have done without you. If anything, this just gave me a chance to be even closer with you. Doing good things with my best friend.

Kevin: (smiling warmly) And I'm glad you're here too, bro. You're family. Always have been, always will be. We have a lot of catching up on comics and coffee too. That Sagada Coffee! Am I right? (chuckles)

(A shadow passed over Kevin's face, his smile fading slightly.)

Kevin: I just wish we hadn't missed lunch with Tara and the kids. She prepared a great meal for us.

Sus: I'm sure they'll understand.

Kevin: Yeah, you're probably right. I should at least call Tara, let her know we're okay. (he delicately caresses his crucifix pendant, now in his left hand.) Just hear her voice.

(He pulled out his phone, his fingers moving slowly across the screen. The deserted school grounds stretched around him, an expanse of silence that pressed in on him from all sides. He pressed the call icon, the phone chirping insistently as it tried to connect. He raised the phone to his ear.)

Suri: (starting to glow slightly) Sus… I think something's not right…

(Silence.)

January 04, 2020. Saturday. 2:43 PM

18th Ave., Cubao, Quezon City, Philippines.

Sus: Hm?

(Then, a sharp, piercing beep. Sus felt a tremor run through him, a wash of nausea overcoming him.)

Sus: What's happening?

(He looked up, his eyes widening in horror as he saw blood begin to trickle from Kevin's ears.)

Suri: (shaking) Sus!

(Kevin's eyes fluttered closed, his body swaying.)

Sus: Kevin?

(He collapsed to the ground.)

Sus: Kevin!

(With a dull thud, the crucifix fell from Kevin's hand)
