Raven grinned at the screen before him. Finally, he had unlocked some of his abilities, his progression to surpass his former self was sailing smoothly. But then he realized something: the Beastodon he had slain possessed abilities connected to shadows, just like his own bloodline. Was it really a coincidence that he encountered such a monster?

Title: INITIATE OF THE VOID

Celestial energy: {50/2000}...]

Looking back at the system, he noticed considerable changes. The celestial energy, once locked, was now displayed as numerical characters. But what exactly was celestial energy? What was its application?

"I'll figure that out later. The fight between those two monsters is bound to attract all sorts of nuisances. I'd better harvest its core shard before scavengers arrive."

Using his wooden sword infused with mana, since the Beastodon's fur and flesh were thick. He began cutting into the corpse. From his past life as a soldier, he knew well what a core shard was: condensed mana crystallized within the body. Every monster and even people carried one, usually found below the diaphragm, near the liver or heart.

Core shards could be used to increase one's mana capacity in the mana vessel or to forge weapons, armor, and special accessories.

Raven soon found the object he was searching for. From the liver, he pulled out a bloodied, dull-red crystal and grinned.

"It really is a Mystic Beast. Its core shard wouldn't be red otherwise. Lucky me."

Not long after, he heard voices approaching. Wasting no time, he quickly leapt onto a nearby tree, hiding among the branches.

"It's this way," a red-bearded Dwarf said, clearing the path for the others: a goblin, a green-skinned female stickman with a staff, and a blue stickman. Raven could tell they were adventurers, their gear and attire said it all.

Upon reaching the Beastodon's corpse, they examined the body.

"It's one of the monsters fighting earlier. The other must've given it this ghastly wound. Looks like it died not far from the battlefield," the goblin observed, eyeing the deep gashes across its torso.

"Yeah, but we're late. Someone already took the spoil. Its core shard was carved out of the liver not long ago," the green stickman said.

"But we still have the body. We can sell the parts for some cash," the female suggested.

"Helga, it's nothing compared to the core shard. This monster was at least Rampant-class Mega Fauna. That's worth 1000 gold coins easy," the Dwarf replied.

"No use dwelling on that. Let's find the other monster before it gets scavenged. If it's still alive, we'll finish it and take its core shard," said Andel, the blue stickman.

The four hurried toward the river, only to be stunned by the devastation left behind from the battle. They spotted the Triospinosaurus resting in the newly formed lake, its massive body covered in wounds.

"That's one hell of a battle… what could make two Mega Faunas fight this hard?" Bzord, the Dwarf, muttered.

"I don't know… but can we even take on something this huge? Even wounded, do we stand a chance?" Zak the goblin asked nervously.

The group turned to Andel, waiting for his decision. He sighed.

"I'd rather live to see another day than risk my life for a few thousand coins," he said. His party breathed a collective sigh of relief.

"What's with that reaction? Do I look crazy to you guys?" Andel snapped.

The trio gave him deadpan stares, their faces practically saying: Don't get us started.

"Fine! Maybe I've done some crazy shit, but I'm not dumb enough to engage a Triospinosaurus. That thing could be Ascendant-class Mega Fauna." He pouted.

"Besides… someone's hoping we'll fight it so he can swoop in and take the spoils." Andel's eyes narrowed as he glared at a nearby tree.

He noticed? Raven thought as he dropped down from the branch, revealing himself.

"Hi guys. How's the adventure going?" Raven said with a bright smile.

"Cut the crap. You think we wouldn't notice you perched there watching us?" Andel retorted.

"So? All I did was watch. Does that really put you in harm's way?" Raven asked smugly.

Andel scowled. "You were waiting for us to fight the monster so you could steal the loot. Too bad we aren't as dumb as you."

"Thank the gods you're not as dumb as you sound," Raven snickered.

"You wanna die? No one will find your body here!" Andel's aura flared, blue fumes spilling from him as his eyes began to glow.

"Enough, you two," Helga cut in. "There's no need to fight. We could always invite him to our party instead."

"Why would I let a stranger join my—" Andel stopped when he caught Helga's glare. He sighed. "Fine. He can join, but his share will be small."

"Bold of you to think I even want to join you. As a matter of fact, I don't," Raven replied.

"Then scamper!" Andel barked.

"Normally I would… but I wandered into this jungle and got lost. Then I got caught in the crossfire of two monsters fighting—but I survived. Lucky for me, one of them died, and I got this shiny thing." Raven pulled out the core shard, grinning.

The party froze, staring wide-eyed at the dull-red gem in his hand. Even Andel, who had been yapping moments ago, was struck silent.

"You… got that from the Beastodon?" Andel asked.

"That's the monster's name? Yeah," Raven answered casually.

"That's a treasure, lad! What do you want for it? We'll do anything in exchange," Zak said, rushing to his side.

"I just want to get out of here. Take me out, and this is yours." Raven smiled...
