Chapter 1 - The glitch

Anya Volkov hunched over her keyboard, the glow of the monitor illuminating her face in the otherwise dark room. Lines of code scrolled past her eyes, a language she understood better than human conversation. It was 3:00 AM and the only sound was the hum of her computer and the occasional clatter of her mechanical keyboard.

She was close. After weeks of relentless work she was on the verge of cracking the encryption on a highly sensitive file for her employer, the seemingly reputable tech giant OmniCorp. The project had been shrouded in secrecy from the start, with vague explanations and tight security protocols but Anya, driven by her insatiable curiosity and a hefty paycheck, hadn't questioned it….until now.

A glitch.

A flicker on the screen, a momentary disruption in the code and then, a hidden directory appeared. It wasn't supposed to be there. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard, a sense of unease creeping into her mind. Against her better judgment she clicked on it.

A series of encrypted files filled the screen, each labeled with cryptic names and dates. Anya's heart pounded in her chest. This wasn't just a simple data breach, it was something far more sinister. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, initiating a decryption sequence. The process was slow, agonizingly so but she couldn't stop now. She had to know what OmniCorp was hiding.

As the first file began to decrypt images flashed across the screen, grainy satellite photos of remote locations, financial records detailing suspicious transactions and documents outlining covert operations. Anya's breath hitched in her throat. This was bigger than she could have ever imagined.

Suddenly a ping echoed through her headphones. An intrusion alert. Someone was trying to access her system. Her blood ran cold. They knew.

Without hesitation Anya severed the connection to the OmniCorp network, shutting down her computer and scrambling to her feet. She grabbed her go bag, a pre-packed emergency kit she'd assembled years ago, a relic from a past she preferred to forget.

As she reached the door, a deafening crash echoed from the hallway. Her apartment door splintered inward and two figures in black tactical gear stormed into the room.

"Anya Volkov" one of them barked, his voice distorted by a modulator. "You're coming with us."

Anya didn't hesitate. She lunged for the fire escape, adrenaline coursing through her veins. As she scrambled down the metal ladder she knew one thing for certain, her life would never be the same again.
