Chapter 10 - The interogation

The woman in black moved with a chilling grace, her presence radiating an aura of danger. Anya stood her ground, adrenaline coursing through her veins.

"Who are you?" Anya demanded, her voice trembling slightly.

The woman chuckled, a dry mirthless sound. "Let's just say I'm a cleaner" she replied. "I take care of problems. And you Ms. Volkov are a very big problem."

Two more figures emerged from the shadows flanking the woman. They were large and imposing, their faces grim and determined. Anya knew that she was outnumbered, outgunned and outmaneuvered.

"What do you want?" she asked, stalling for time.

"The file" the woman replied, her voice sharp and impatient. "The one you took from the archives. Hand it over and maybe… just maybe we'll let you walk away."

Anya hesitated. The file was her only leverage, her only hope of exposing The Syndicate. But she also knew that resisting would be futile. They would torture her, break her and eventually get what they wanted.

"I don't have it" she lied, hoping they would believe her.

The woman's eyes narrowed. "Don't play games with me" she said. "We know you have it. We've been watching you every step of the way."

She gestured to her henchmen who moved forward, their hands reaching for Anya. She braced herself for the inevitable but before they could reach her a sudden explosion rocked the train station.

The ground shook and debris rained down from the ceiling. The woman and her henchmen were thrown off balance giving Anya the opportunity she needed.

She lunged forward knocking the woman off her feet and sprinting towards the exit. The woman recovered quickly and fired her weapon but Anya managed to dodge the bullets, her heart pounding in her chest.

She burst out of the train station and into the night, running as fast as she could her lungs burning, her legs aching. She didn't know who had caused the explosion or why but she was grateful for the distraction.

As she ran she realized that she couldn't stay in the town. It was too dangerous, too compromised. She needed to get away, to find a safe place to regroup and plan her next move.

She made her way to a nearby highway where she managed to hitch a ride with a passing truck driver. She told him she was running away from an abusive relationship, a story that he seemed to believe.

As the truck sped away from the town Anya looked back, her heart filled with a mixture of relief and despair. She had escaped but she had lost Dimitri, her only friend and ally. She didn't know what had happened to him but she feared the worst.

She clutched the file tightly in her hand, her only connection to the truth, her only hope of bringing The Syndicate to justice. She knew that the road ahead would be long and dangerous but she refused to give up. She would fight to the end, to honor Dimitri's sacrifice and expose the darkness that had consumed so many lives.
