Chapter 65 - Chapter 65: The Exchange Tournament

Chapter 65: The Exchange Tournament

Dull, daily training is the foundation for everything.

After eating lunch with his Pokémon, Kenji began the afternoon training session with them.

Beedrill trained alone.

With Kenji now supervising, Gyarados was finally relieved of its coaching duties and could go off to the side to train peacefully, much to its delight.

Kenji, meanwhile, trained Ekans and Larvitar personally.

As if it wanted to show off for Kenji, Ekans trained with exceptional effort.

When it got tired, Kenji would have Ekans teach Larvitar Dragon Dance.

After spending so much time together, Ekans and Larvitar's relationship had gradually started to resemble that of a boss and his underling.

Ekans was the boss, and Larvitar was, naturally, the little brother.

In the following days, Kenji officially registered for the tournament. When he had time, he attended a few classes, and when he didn't, he trained his Pokémon. His days were simple and fulfilling.

Three days passed in a flash.

"Whoa, why are there so many people?!?!"

The moment Kenji walked into the battle colosseum, he was completely dumbfounded.

The front-row seats in the audience were already packed.

It wasn't that the crowd was small; it was just that Metropolis Academy's battle colosseum was absolutely enormous.

"The spectators are all from the South Campus. There are even teachers in the crowd," Goro said.

As Goro spoke, Kenji processed the scene, and the two of them walked into the waiting area.

As expected of a top-tier academy, the facilities were second to none.

Like the Windswept Club, there were five battlefields in the center of the colosseum.

The difference was that these five fields had varied environments.

There was a desert field covered in dry sand, a water field with nothing but a circular platform in the middle of a pool, a grass field, a wasteland field, and a classic field.

The varied terrain added a significant element of randomness.

For example, if you drew the water field, a trainer specializing in Water-types would have an indisputable advantage.

On the other hand, if a trainer who only used Fire-types was randomly assigned to the water field, it would be an absolute nightmare scenario.

"Out of the three hundred students in our year, about two hundred of them joined the tournament."

As Goro's words fell on Kenji's ears, they transformed into the sound of ringing cash registers.

Two hundred people... at 500,000 Pokédollars each... that added up to a cool one hundred million!

One hundred million! It was the kind of number that made him drool just thinking about it.

These young masters were truly loaded, tossing around 500,000 like it was pocket change.

Just take Goro next to him, for example. Kenji had only learned in the last two days that this guy was the nephew of the Crestview City Gym Leader. His parents both worked at the local research institute, and his allowance was in the six figures.

Because he liked Steel-type Pokémon, his entrance exam Pokémon was a B-Rank potential Pawniard. He also had a B- potential, level 38 Steelix and a C- potential, level 39 Lairon.

All Kenji could say was that being born well truly was a skill.

"Hello, everyone! I'm your commentator for today, Mimi! Welcome, students, to the event! First! Let's give a huge round of applause to welcome our new freshmen...!"

The commentator was an upperclassman from the South Campus's Battle Commentary program.

She was very pretty, the sweet, girl-next-door type, but her voice was filled with power.

After all, for a profession like battle commentary, a soft, weak voice made it hard to get invested and hype up the crowd.

"And now! Let's hear it for our first group of competitors as they enter the arena!"

As Mimi finished speaking, the electronic screen flashed, showing five pairs of names.

Neither Kenji nor Goro was on the list; they were all people he didn't recognize.

In the waiting area, several people stood up and headed out.

Kenji subconsciously glanced at those who were leaving.

"Hm?" Suddenly, Kenji froze.

A young man with a head of curly hair was walking out, and draped around his neck was a small, blue, snake-like creature.

That little blue creature was none other than Dratini, the first form of the pseudo-legendary Dragonite.

Kenji activated his data-eye. The guy, his potential, his ability... aside from being a slightly higher level than when he first saw it, the Dratini was identical to the one from the institute.

It looked like this was the third pseudo-legendary recipient from this year, besides himself and Yuki.

"That guy's name is Zayne. He's from the Western Region. Super arrogant, but he's definitely the real deal," Goro suddenly muttered beside him.

Kenji turned his head. "You know him?"

Goro shook his head. "Not personally, but he's pretty famous on the school forums. Mostly 'cause he's so arrogant. He posted that this year's championship is his for the taking.

"Besides, to recruit more top-tier talent this year, the academy really bled for us. They got three pseudo-legendaries from the Three Great Pseudo-Legendary Guardian Families. One of them went to that guy, Zayne. Now he wears that Dratini everywhere, like he's afraid someone won't know he has it."

Goro's tone was laced with jealousy. After all, it was a pseudo-legendary. Even with his affluent background, Goro couldn't help but be envious.

Zayne, huh? Interesting.

Kenji looked up at the big screen, a spark of anticipation in his heart. He had seen Yuki's strength firsthand—she was very strong, it was just a shame he was a "hacker."

He wondered which of them was stronger, Zayne or Yuki.

"On the wasteland field, it looks like Zayne has something around his neck... Oh my goodness! That's a Dratini!"

Without a doubt, the Dratini around Zayne's neck had earned him the spotlight. In an instant, the entire audience's attention was focused on him.

Zayne seemed to be reveling in the attention, waving enthusiastically and even blowing a few kisses to the crowd.

After finishing his little performance, Zayne finally turned to look at his opponent, who was standing in the opposite trainer's box.
