Chapter 70 - Chapter 70: The Battle Tower

Chapter 70: The Battle Tower

Kenji grinned and said, half-jokingly, "If I told you I'm using a hack and forgot to turn it off, would you believe me?"

Goro just gave him a speechless look. He didn't say anything, but his eyes were full of disbelief. He'd taken Kenji's words as a joke and didn't press the matter.

Seeing Goro's expression, Kenji sighed.

He doesn't know I was telling the truth.

What was the Gacha Fusion System if not a straight-up hack?

While the two were bickering, Goro suddenly got excited and cursed, "Holy shit! It's finally my turn!"

Kenji looked down at the electronic match-up screen. He saw Goro's name, alright.

But when he saw the name of Goro's opponent, Kenji was dumbfounded.

Yuki??

What kind of goddamn coincidence was this?

Goro, seemingly unaware of the gravity of his situation, just laughed and clapped Kenji on the shoulder. "Later, Kenji! Get ready to watch my performance."

Having the skill to get into Metropolis Academy, Goro was naturally full of confidence in himself, and he grinned at Kenji.

Kenji opened his mouth, about to offer a word of warning, but the guy had already gotten up and walked off.

Goro wasn't weak. Among the competitors who had battled so far, he was at least average.

But his luck was just rotten. Of all the people to run into, he had to get Yuki.

Kenji silently ran the calculations in his head.

Goro's chances of winning were practically zero.

His only path to victory was to pray that Yuki had forgotten to bring her Pokéballs today.

...

In the time it took Kenji to run these calculations, the previous match had ended. Goro was walking onto the field, grinning from ear to ear.

On the other side, Yuki's white hair was as eye-catching as ever. She was dressed in her usual all-black.

The clothes were adorned with a terrifying pattern that contrasted sharply with her cute face.

It fit her identity as a Dark-type specialist perfectly.

After their previous battle, Kenji had a slight understanding of Yuki's special ability.

He didn't know the specifics, but he guessed it gave some kind of boost to Dark-type Pokémon.

Metropolis Academy, aside from the three of them who had received pseudo-legendaries, also had other "special ability" users.

Just today, Kenji had already spotted three psychics.

So-called psychics were, to put it bluntly, just humans who had learned the move "Confusion." In battle, they could use this to communicate telepathically, commanding their Pokémon without speaking.

Identifying them was simple: if a trainer wasn't speaking their commands and their eyes were glowing faintly blue, they were almost certainly a psychic.

On the field, the match began.

Goro and Yuki had drawn the Desert Field.

For his first Pokémon, Goro sent out his level 38 Steelix.

Yuki immediately countered with her Krookodile.

The moment Krookodile appeared, the outcome of the battle was sealed.

A level 46 Krookodile, even on a battlefield as packed with experts as Metropolis Academy, held absolute dominance.

Five minutes later, Goro returned, completely crestfallen. Kenji wasn't sure how to comfort him.

It wasn't that Goro was fragile or a sore loser. It was that Yuki's Krookodile was just too vicious.

Not to mention, the Desert Field was Krookodile's home turf. A Sand Tomb followed by an Earthquake took Steelix down immediately.

The Lairon he sent out next was even more pitiful, with its 4x weakness to both Ground and Fighting.

It was one-shot by Krookodile's Dig and Brick Break combo.

His last Pokémon, Pawniard, wasn't even worth mentioning.

Three Pokémon, and not one of them lasted more than a minute against Yuki.

In fact, all three combined hadn't even landed a single hit on Krookodile.

A battle with such a massive gap in strength was just no fun to watch.

Yuki didn't return to the waiting area. She simply left as soon as her match was over.

Kenji, however, watched the rest of the matches with great interest. With five battles running at once, the 200-plus participants were split into just over twenty groups.

Around 2 PM, the day's matches finally concluded.

Most of the battles were fantastic, full of back-and-forth action.

Steamrolls like the ones Kenji and Zayne had pulled off were rare.

Kenji had already picked up his Gyarados from the Pokémon Center. Once the matches were over, he and Goro left, said their goodbyes, and returned to their respective villas.

Back at his villa, Kenji let out his four Pokémon to train on their own.

They trained until evening.

After feeding his Pokémon dinner, Kenji left the villa.

He left Metropolis Academy and sat in a taxi, quietly admiring the beautiful Metropolis night-scape.

About ten minutes later, the car stopped.

Kenji paid the fare, got out, and looked up at the building in front of him.

The skyscraper stood in one of Metropolis's most prosperous districts, like a shining beacon. The glass curtain wall was plated in a fantastical spectrum of colors under the city lights.

This was the Metropolis Battle Tower, the place where the city's strongest trainers gathered.

He admired the tower's grand exterior, marveling at its splendor, before stepping inside.

When he entered the first-floor lobby, he saw a large electronic directory on one side, listing the function of every floor.

According to the screen, the Battle Tower had a total of 88 floors.

Floors 1-10 were a shopping area, selling everything from Pokémon eggs to evolution stones, held items, and all sorts of miscellaneous goods.

Floors 11-30 were rented out to Metropolis's various major battle clubs.

As for floors 31-66, that was the Battle Zone.

Unlike the friendly spars at the battle clubs, the battles here were more like in the games: if you lost, you lost your money.
