Chapter 78: Overdrive Mode! The Spear That Pierces the League!!
It actually caught up to the falling Honchkrow. While still in mid-air, Beedrill landed another Fell Stinger, "helping" the Honchkrow accelerate on its way down.
"BOOM!!!—"
Honchkrow slammed heavily into the ground, kicking up a cloud of dirt.
Beedrill simply hovered silently above the fallen Honchkrow. From the very beginning, from the moment it entered the field, the white light sheathing its wings had never faded.
"Oh my goodness!!! Contestant Kenji's Beedrill is just too fast!!"
The commentator, Mimi, cried out in shock.
From the start, Kenji's training philosophy for Beedrill was crystal clear: absolute power and absolute speed.
The Huge Power ability represented its absolute power. And "Overdrive Mode" represented its absolute speed.
Overdrive Mode was what Beedrill was demonstrating right now: a permanent, normalized Quick Attack.
From day one, Kenji had prioritized the move Quick Attack, having Beedrill practice it relentlessly.
And now, that practice was paying dividends. Beedrill had successfully mastered Overdrive Mode, allowing it to maintain the Quick Attack state indefinitely in battle.
As one of the most basic Normal-type moves, Quick Attack is simple to learn. What's truly difficult is maintaining that state permanently, even while standing perfectly still.
Even Beedrill hadn't fully mastered it before coming to Metropolis Academy.
In Overdrive Mode, every single move Beedrill used could be considered a combination move with Quick Attack.
And this was before Mega Evolution, while its base stats were still relatively balanced. Once it Mega Evolved, what terrifying new heights would Mega Beedrill's speed reach?
No one knew. Not even Kenji could fathom what its future achievements would be, or what kind of monster it would become.
On the field, it wasn't just Mimi who was stunned by Beedrill's horrifying speed; everyone in the audience was staring, wide-eyed.
This was Overdrive Mode's public debut.
Little did they know, from this moment forward, Beedrill had redefined the move Quick Attack.
The term "Overdrive Mode" would soon echo throughout the entire National League.
But for decades, even centuries to come, no other Pokémon would ever be able to perfectly replicate it.
"Honchkrow is unable to battle! Beedrill is the winner!!"
Yuki silently recalled Honchkrow, her expression unreadable, but her eyes held a rare trace of helplessness.
As Kenji expected, Yuki's final Pokémon was her Krookodile.
It seemed Krookodile's memory of Beedrill was a strong one. The thuggish Pokémon, for the first time, had a trace of fear in its eyes.
The battle ended quickly.
"SO BADASS!!!—"
In the waiting area, Goro slammed his hand on the armrest of the sofa, letting out an excited roar and nearly jumping out of his seat.
The next second, he froze, realizing what he'd done. He turned his head and saw that everyone in the waiting area was staring at him.
Goro gave an awkward laugh, put his hands together in a "my bad" gesture, and sheepishly sat back down.
As Kenji left the field, his first stop was the medical staff, to whom he handed over his Gyarados's Pokéball for treatment.
"You're strong. But one day, I will defeat you."
A woman's voice suddenly came from behind him, startling the unprepared Kenji. He turned to see Yuki standing right there.
This was the first time Kenji had ever heard her string so many words together.
"Huh? Oh."
Kenji blinked, processed her words, and nodded instinctively. He was about to say something, but Yuki gave him no chance, simply turning and walking away.
This left Kenji feeling a bit awkward. What was that? A rival declaration?
Probably not, he thought. Ash's rivals, like Paul and Gary, were the ones who thrashed him in the beginning.
In this case, I'm the one who thrashed her. So... she must see me as her rival.
At that thought, Kenji smiled. He didn't dwell on it. While waiting for Gyarados to be healed, he went back to the waiting area to watch the other matches.
"Kenji, man! You're my hero! That was SICK!!"
Kenji had barely stepped back into the waiting area and already regretted it. He shoved Goro off him with a look of disgust.
Goro was genuinely in awe. He couldn't believe his buddy from back home was this monstrous. Yuki, the girl who had 3-0'd him, had been completely shut down by Kenji, unable to fight back at all.
"Get off, get off," Kenji shoved him away. "Just talk normally, man."
Kenji's sexual orientation was, and had always been, perfectly normal.
His body might be 18, but if you added the 20 years from his past life, he was a 38-year-old man. And his tastes had always been very specific: he was only interested in smart, mature women.
"Hey, friend!"
Hearing that botched accent, Kenji turned his head. He already knew who it was just from the voice.
Sure enough, Zayne was standing right behind him.
"Zayne? Hey. What's up?" Kenji asked politely.
Kenji didn't have a bad impression of the guy from the Western Region. He was arrogant, sure, but he had the skills to back it up. He had steamrolled his way here using only his Medicham, sweeping every match 3-0.
As the saying goes, "If a young man isn't arrogant, is he even young?"
Zayne smiled and stuck out his hand. "No need for 'polite', friend! You are very strong. I want to be your friend!"
It was unexpected, but it also made sense. Kenji shook his hand. "You're strong, too. I'm looking forward to our match."
"Me too," Zayne replied.
After speaking, Zayne, who was apparently the type to make friends easily, plopped down right next to Kenji.
