Chapter 86: The Treatment of a Genius
Vulpix, the Fox Pokémon, is a Fire-type.
Its evolution, Ninetales, is described in the Pokédex as an extremely intelligent Pokémon, possessing a mind fully equal to that of a human. It is also extremely long-lived, a creature steeped in legend.
Though it does not possess the Psychic type, it is highly proficient in Psychic moves and Hypnosis.
Its nature is both curious and vindictive, which led to it being regarded as the embodiment of a demon in ancient times.
And after evolution, a Ninetales wouldn't be a bad option for a mount...
Kenji looked at the little creature curiously. It wasn't a shy Pokémon. Noticing the human staring at it, it deliberately arched its small neck and puffed out its chest.
This was the first time since Kenji became a trainer—other than Arbok, who treated him like a mother since it hatched—that a Pokémon had so actively and firmly chosen him.
"Why did you choose me as your trainer?" Kenji extended his hand, tentatively stroking Vulpix's fiery-red body, asking curiously.
This time, Vulpix's voice didn't ring in Kenji's ear. It merely shook its head gently.
"You are a special trainer."
This was the sentence that echoed in Kenji's mind after Vulpix tilted its head and thought for a long moment.
Looking at the adorable red fox in front of him, Kenji smiled. He extended his hand. "Then... let me be your trainer from now on. I look forward to working with you."
"Yo-mo..."
Vulpix extended a forepaw and placed it on Kenji's palm.
Kenji took out a Pokéball. Vulpix was extremely cooperative, actively tapping the button with its paw. It was immediately drawn into the red light of the Pokéball.
The Pokéball only shook symbolically a few times, and the movement was extremely faint. A moment later, a crisp ding sounded.
Capture successful!
"Come on out! Vulpix!"
After the successful capture, Kenji immediately released Vulpix from the Pokéball.
Vulpix did not like being inside a Pokéball; Vulpix had told him so itself.
This wasn't a problem. Vulpix's current size was about that of a small dog. Keeping it by his side, rather than in a Pokéball, wouldn't be an issue.
Vulpix's eyes glowed blue. A wave of psychic energy enveloped its tiny body, lifting it straight into Kenji's arms.
Kenji was momentarily startled, feeling a strange sense of being strong-armed.
But Vulpix's body was soft and very pleasant to stroke, and Kenji quickly got over it.
"Oh? Vulpix?"
Director He also spotted the little creature in Kenji's arms at a glance, observing Vulpix curiously.
Vulpix, however, kept its eyes closed, looking as if it had fallen asleep.
"Well, do you want to catch one more?" Director He asked.
Kenji currently had five Pokéballs on his waist, only one short of a full team of six.
Six-on-six was the most common format for major competitions.
Kenji nodded, then asked, "Director He, could you take me to the Pokémon Egg Incubation Room at the Breeding House?"
"You want to choose an egg for your sixth Pokémon?" Director He instantly guessed Kenji's intention, surprised.
Kenji nodded. "Yes, I do."
This made Director He a little confused. The Potential Detector couldn't read the potential of an unhatched egg. Choosing a Pokémon egg meant the Pokémon's potential couldn't be guaranteed.
But if Kenji insisted, he must have his reasons.
"The Pokémon in this particular Breeding House were selected from the other eighteen type-specific houses, so we have very few eggs here. If you want to choose an egg, you'll need to go to one of those other eighteen specialized houses," Director He explained.
Kenji nodded. Director He then pulled out a golden card from his trousers pocket and handed it over.
"This is..."
Kenji was about to ask, but Director He cut him off, explaining, "With this card, you can go to any Breeding House and select a Pokémon egg."
"I won't join you for that. High-grade Pokéblocks will be delivered to your dorm shortly. Your little Vulpix will also need a Fire Stone to evolve. We have plenty of high-quality Fire Stones, and a few exceptional ones, too. We'll have one of those sent to you as well.
"Oh, and is your dorm space big enough? We also have..."
As Director He spoke, Kenji's eyes grew brighter and brighter.
This was the treatment of a genius.

Kenji was quite curious about this special Vulpix.
"Ah, no, nothing's wrong. This Vulpix is just extremely talented. I'm just surprised that you managed to capture it.
"This little one is famously stubborn in our Breeding House. It's been here a long time. Many trainers have tried to catch it, but they all failed," the staff member said casually.
Kenji listened, stroking Vulpix's silky soft fur with his free hand.
Leaving the Breeding House, Kenji took a campus shuttle, first heading to the nearest Flying-type Breeding House.
It was during the ride that Kenji finally had a chance to properly examine Vulpix's status panel.
