Dahlia's POV

Lorena's voice carried a sharp edge as she spoke. "That Madge woman has some nerve. I watched Mr. Zaid leave your room this morning, and she acted like nothing happened. She's still all over him like a second skin. How can you stand it, Dahlia?"

A bitter smile crossed my lips. "Madge moves through the world like royalty. I have to admit, if I were a man, I'd probably find that confidence attractive too."

The sound of approaching heels made us both turn. Madge glided toward us with practiced grace, each step deliberate and commanding.

"Lorena, be a dear and fetch me something to drink," she said, her words wrapped in silk but carrying steel underneath.

Lorena's protective instincts flared. "I'm worried she's going to tear you apart, Dahlia."

I squeezed Lorena's hand, forcing warmth into my expression. "She'll find my skin tougher than she expects. Go on, get those drinks."

Lorena left reluctantly, shooting worried glances over her shoulder as she headed to the bar.
