Chapter 10 - Jacob

There was still Jacob to consider, most likely when Sara and Kurt got back he was going to be home this time. Their main concern was that Jacob could potentially tell his father, and there were no situations where that ended up very good at the moment. A clan finds a new well and gate, there was no telling what they would do. Luckily the clan operated mostly on the other side, their influence on Earth was contained, but not controlled.

It is very hard to handle a member of a clan outside his clan, as they generally see themselves above the law, at least everyone else's. And since the powers they controlled were formidable, they tended to be able to walk anywhere with impunity, no one really wanted to cause a problem.

Jacob mostly seemed to coast off his parents' wealth. Your basic rich kid mentality, he had a part-time job but never really seemed to need the money. He was better dressed than most, and his blond hair was always styled. He was wearing a light blue collared button up shirt, with the top two button un buttoned, and tan khackis.

The governments of Earth would eventually have to do something, but since the clans choose to isolate themselves around the gate, they essentially became city-states, and clan members had diplomatic immunity. They also tended to make a lot of money, as their products included not just simple cheap springs, but enhanced weaponry and tools. The ways and techniques were somewhat secret, but the basics involved materials like mana stone from the other side. The clan basically had a monopoly, and certain clans had a monopoly on certain components.

There was a big suspicion that the clan were actually preparing on the other side to make a big move against the continent. How true that was is anyone's guess. The government strength rested on numbers, the nations were much older than any of the gates, and there were already huge military organizations before their appearance. While the clan power rested with their abilities that were known to compensate somewhat for numbers, but there was still an overwhelming difference in their logistical capabilities. The scales between the city-state clans with a gate, and the larger nations were always being adjusted this way or that.

So, Jacob's dad being a clan member was a problem that tentatively the plan was to basically run away from, but to do that either Jacob had to be in on it, or they would both have to move out, and leave at a minimum. They had time though, the city-State of Dakota Springs didn't have much influence in the area. It was actually rare to even know a clan member for most people.

Because what Kurt had brought back had already accounted for three paychecks from his last job already, and he didn't even know what he was looking for the first time. Or so Sara said, but the money hadn't materialized yet, they had just got back, and it was dark and everyone was tired.

When they got there, they told a tale of how Kurt had ran into someone on his way back jogging, and was offered a job as courier, same day rush deliveries, and had to hitch a ride to get a new refill on mana water and it was sort of a last minute ride. And that Sara just happened to run into him on the way home.

"Well, you do have that running thing down, I don't know how you do it, it's like you can go forever."

"Yeah, with the spring water feeling like it was about to stop, and with the job offer I needed to go. It happened to work out because their headquarters is the next town over from the gate. And they are opening a branch nearby. They were on their way. Sorry I just didn't have time to tell you."

"That's bold, especially for you."

"It was just a line cook's job, gotta take an opportunity when it's there."

"So who's your boss then?"

"Umm…her name is Layla, she might stop by here and there," looking at Sara.

"Ohh a girl boss, all is right in the world," said Sara playing along.

"Well glad to have you back." said Jacob.

"Yeah, hopefully this will be something I might be able to afford in my own place," said Kurt.

"What? No, bro. Don't be like that. You don't have to go. Don't worry about rent being late if you have a paycheck malfunction either, I got you man."

After more small talk, Jacob excused himself with a 'some of this has to work in the morning'. And it seemed to have worked out.

The next few days sort of flew by, and really they had to stop. Because they had made much more than they intended to. Kurt had been able to actually outfit himself with a sturdy backpack, the gnomes had fashioned a proper spear, and he had a mace. Sara was actually starting to get nervous, he said some of the people had shown perhaps too much interest in some of it.

The story worked out because in the end that was basically what he was doing; it was just he and Sara were his only customers in a way. Just mixed up the details. So Jacob was none the wiser for the time being. Frankly the story they told was a bit more believable than what actually happened.
