Chapter 56 - Commanding Presence

Elena's POV

The banter between Vale and me continued, sharp but masked as casual chatter, glasses of wine in hand. Every sip, every smile, every tilt of his head carried a challenge. I kept my own responses light, teasing, just enough to keep him guessing and at the same time firing back ruthlessly at him.

The Wells observed quietly, leaning against the polished edge of the table, their expressions calm and amused. They were not intervening, only letting the display unfold. I could feel their eyes weighing every word, but they were not taking sides at least not yet.

Below us, the birthday program carried on with laughter, music, and the occasional toast. Honestly, I did not even remember who the celebrant was anymore. That was not why I had come here in the first place. I had a purpose, and it was not to watch a party or play polite guest.

Vale, of course, made it clear he was here to make sure whatever I was here for did not succeed.
