KARMA: REBIRTH
Karma woke up feeling drained, as if she had just returned from a long, brutal war. She stared at the ceiling, her heart pounding in confusion.
"Am I reborn… or did I just dream my entire life ahead of me?"
Cold sweat trickled down her spine.
She jumped out of bed and rushed downstairs. What she saw stopped her in her tracks — a familiar scene, a familiar figure. Tears welled up in her eyes as she ran and threw her arms around the woman.
"MOMMY!" she cried.
Abigail froze.
She had expected a fight — a rebel, maybe even a scream of defiance. But not this.
"W-what did you just call me?" she asked, trying to mask the surge of emotion in her voice.and with trembling hands She gently pushed Karma away, forcing an indifferent tone.
"I'm taking you back to the city," Abigail said stiffly. "You'll live with me… and my husband."
She braced herself for a tantrum. For resistance. For the usual Karma.
But none came.
Karma didn't argue. She didn't glare. She just stood still.
Why? Abigail wondered, baffled.
Before she could say another word, Karma stepped forward and hugged her again — tighter this time.
"I love you too, Mommy."
Abigail felt her heart leap. For a second, she almost embraced the child. Almost.
But then — "too"?
Wait…
Too?
What? Why? When? How? How could Karma — of all people — confess love to her?
---
"I'll go wherever you go, Mommy."
The room went still.
Everyone turned to look at Karma, jaws slack, hearts pounding in disbelief.
"Karma… are you thinking straight?" Aunt Stella blurted out before she could stop herself.
The words cut through the silence like a blade.
Karma didn't respond. She just clung to Abigail's waist, eyes full of something no one in that room recognized—peace. Forgiveness. Maybe even love.
She was thirteen, still just a girl, but in that moment, she seemed older. Wiser. Like she had lived more lives than the rest of them combined.
Her family stared in confusion. All these years, they had told her that her mother had abandoned her. Left her in the village to rot, chasing a better life in the city with a new husband and fancy things.
And the name — Karma.
"Who names a child Karma?" they would sneer.
"A name cursed from the start."
They fed her hatred by the spoonful, stirring it into every bedtime story, every whisper in the hallways, every lesson at the dinner table.
But none of them knew the truth.
In her past life, Karma had let that hatred grow. It poisoned her heart. She had turned on her mother, the one person who had truly loved her. Her bitter, jealous family had used her anger, turned her into a weapon. And when they had no more use for either of them, they stole Abigail's wealth, her life's work… and ended both mother and daughter in cold blood.
But now…
Karma had a second chance.
And she wasn't going to waste it.
